...to think my cat is gifted and talented?

Most of the time he just lies in front of the fire, licks his arse and dribbles, but when he wants to to wake up in the morning and feed him, he will repeatedly tap my arm with his paw. And if I doze off he will tap me even harder.

Anyone else got a feline genius?

Mine has learned to 'sit' for cat treats. If she sees me pick up the pack she sits automatically, without me saying the command!

ImeldaM · 20/12/2010 15:14

My old cat used to love to chase & fetch too, she also used to steal dog biscuits out of the cupboard, got some caught red-handed photos of her beside happy looking dog Xmas Grin

On opening doors, my remaining cat used to do a somersault beside door then look around puzzled as if wondering whether somersault had got her through the door Hmm not the sharpest pencil in the box!!

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 20/12/2010 15:17

My cat plays 'fetch'. With straws.

Not sure if he's clever or thinks he's a dog.

sarahfreck · 20/12/2010 15:40

One of our cats used to get underneath the bottom of the duvet and gently chew your toes (not real biting) until you got up (very quickly) to feed him. He also got he better of my Dad over the one and only proper chair (as opposed to stools)in the kitchen.
Cat is curled in chair.
Dad tips chair and cat slides off.
Dad sits in chair.
Cat sits by back door meowing to be let out.
Dad gets up and opens back door.
Cat gets back on chair!
He also used to enjoy it if we were outside with him and show off madly by rushing up trees in an excited way, then realise that the branch he was on was rather thin and that he couldn't turn around, then back along said branch extremely slowly looking sheepish!

gerontius · 20/12/2010 15:41

I think what you're all forgetting is that G and T is just a Government word applied to the top 10% of cats. So while a cat may be G and T in one household, the same cat may not in another.

GlitteryBalls · 20/12/2010 17:07

Awwww!! I heart cats so much, but in my adult life I seem to have grown allergic to them and get really bad if I'm in the house of someone who has one. So sadly I don't think I'll ever be able to have one again Sad.

luckykitty · 20/12/2010 17:16

If you ask small cat if he is tiny he will howl at you as if he genuinely understands what youre going on about Grin he also follows me everywhere as if to keep an eye on me and bump, oh and to scream at me to turn the tap on in the bathroom as he has discovered he can have a drink from it! Large cat just sits there looking disgusted with him.

Both small and large cats have excellent taste and LOVE to have an olive as a treat, they roll about on the floor like posessed creatures, its wrong but lovely! Hmm

They have currently fallen out over something though, they ususally huddle in a pile of ginger and white lovliness but are on seperate chairs at opposite ends of the room, the big one is facing the back of the chair, he must be well p*ssed off...

rocketleaf · 20/12/2010 17:41

Glittery the best way to cure cat allergy is to get a cat! We had a very allergic friend house sit for us for 4 months and we have a black cat which apparently produce the most allergenic dander. He took a piriton a day at first then weaned himself off them, after 4 months no allergies and he now owns a cat and 2 dogs. Same thing happened to a very allergic couple we know who got adopted by a cat, they both ended up not allergic. (cat pusher)

GlitteryBalls · 20/12/2010 18:40

Actually I did move back in with my parents for a while when I was in early pregnancy and they had 2 cats. I usually have to take antihistamines every day when I stay there but obviously I couldn't and actually, though I suffered at first, I did get better after a while. I just put it down to pregnancy altering my immune system though...

Ormirian · 20/12/2010 18:47

Mine tries to lie on my hair and purrs loudly and does that kneading thing with her bloody claws out.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 20/12/2010 18:49

My friend was always very allergic to my cats whenever she visited and would wheeze and her eyes would stream - but now she has her own cats and fosters cats - she did have some medication to start with but not sure she needs it any more (another cat pusher).

wendihouse22 · 20/12/2010 20:31

Yes, pure genius.

My cat was is a retriever. For real. I would throw something and he's chase after it, bring it back and drop it at my feet. Then he's sit looking at me until I repeated the throw.

Also, he used to follow me to Sainsbury's. Crazy mog would sit outside the swishy doors, just far enough away from the other dogs tethered, awaiting their owners.

H e was class. Pure class.

I had to have him put down 2 yrs ago and he broke my heart.

wendihouse22 · 20/12/2010 20:31

Should read....."My cat thought he was a retriever"

JingleBelleDameSansMerci · 20/12/2010 20:50

GlitteryBalls, I've got Maine Coons (and a mog) but several people who're allergic to cats don't seem to have a problem with the long haired furbags so they may be the answer?

I used to have a cat that would wake me up by gently sticking one claw into the end of my nose... It really hurt but was quite effective.

The present incumbents are all nuts but have me very well trained.

JingleBelleDameSansMerci · 20/12/2010 20:52

Oh, I should mention next door's cat (also a Maine Coon)... He sits on my window sill and makes himself look cold (by making his ears shiver) until I let him into his house. Sometimes, he's only been out a few minutes and it's not until I'm at the door that I realise my neighbour is in and he doesn't need my assistance at all!

Ingles2 · 20/12/2010 21:12

I've got a G&T Cat.. I've got a SN cat as well though
Grin
She talks to me,...only me though.
When I call her in, she answers, even if she's quite some distance away (we're in open farmland) with this yowl that sounds just like hellll...lloooo. It's hysterical... She runs straight home, calling all the way.
She also sleeps on my head at night.
She's FAB!

LeChatRouge · 20/12/2010 21:18

My cat plays Peep bo. She'll sit in a room and you can repeatedly peer at her from behind the door and every time you appear, she'll meow. This can go on for ages - 10 or so times - it's very funny.

I also had a cat that would sit on the bed next to you before you woke up and slowly extend one paw towards your nose and attach a claw to the inside of your nostril. reat alarm clock.

My aunt's cat would use their toilet instead of a litter tray and then jump up and flush the toilet - truly amazing. I babysat once and had the fright of my life as we were downstairs and the loo flushed - my cousins were like - oh, it's just the cat!

We live in a terrace with no gaps in between each house and my cat has worked out how to get all the way round the front, which house is ours, how to climb up the wisteria to our bedroom window and then knocks on the window to come in!

She's got such a sweet little face - I love her.

IvantaOuiOui · 20/12/2010 21:34

Jinglebelle, my diabetic, 19 year old Maine Coon died this year, he was much loved. He was very chatty and I don't think he realised he was a cat. Does yours 'talk'?

OP posts:
The3Bears · 20/12/2010 21:49

I absolutley love cats, we have one atm and shes great so loving although she is very fiesty and keeps trying to fight with ds.

really would love to have another though and so does ds :)

JingleBelleDameSansMerci · 20/12/2010 21:54

Ivanta (love your name), they never bloody shut up!

The male (or "Ginger Beast" as he is affectionately known) in particular seems to have a wide vocabulary. He meows and yawns at the same time too which is quite funny. His sister also does that sometimes and now the kitten ("Domestic Short Hair" ie mog) does the same.

I also think the male doesn't consider himself a cat. He certainly behaves as if special treatment is required and, of course, gets it.

So sorry about your old boy cat. It's heartbreaking when they leave us. Sad

luckykitty · 21/12/2010 13:40

There is definately something nuts about ginger cats. Small cat 'Dave' is ginger stripey and resembles an ewok, we are not entirely convinced he is 100% cat, he has just scaled the christmas tree and taken the star off the top of it (not to mention everything at the bottom 2 foot of it too) Xmas Hmm
He also frequently does the yawning/meowing thing resulting in the kind of noise I would expect if I'd trodden on him.

Large cat (the super-jumbo as he is known) is white and fox ginger and is currently licking the sink where Ive just tipped the liquid out of an empty jar of olives away, he looks soooo happy Xmas Hmm

They drive DP mental but they are so funny and genuinely do the most bizarre things that I cant be mad at them, which prob says more about me than them Grin

Iklboo · 21/12/2010 13:43

My smallest cat can say 'mama'

Ok it sounds like 'mama'

Ok, ok it sounds like 'mama' if you really believe

luckykitty · 21/12/2010 13:50

Grin iklboo

muminthemiddle · 21/12/2010 13:50

My cat knows instantly if I have taken out a tin of Tuna from the cupboard. She can tell the difference without looking between tuna and say tinned fruit.

I am at present however trying to train her up on how to close a door behind her, she leaves it wide open and it is freezing.

wendihouse22 · 21/12/2010 14:30

purple....you truly have a gifted cat there.

I have tried to get my new cat, Tallulah, to walk (well, wear) a harness but she looks at it and me as if to say "you have got to be kidding me you sick cow".

I'd only take that kind of disdain from her because she is sooooo beautiful. Mackerel tabby and exquisitely pretty!
