To not give my children the swine flu vaccine?

I decided not to last year as I wanted to wait and see how safe it was but am reconsidering this year after several people have died. Did you give it to your children and what were your reasons to give/not give it?

Haven't read any more than first page but I know of a mum who has just had a baby havbing had it by c section due to swine ful. She very nearly died adn is only now breathing unaided and aware that she has had a baby girl and is in hospital. Very scary disease

'Don't you think that a polio-free world would be wonderful?'

I think that would be fantastic. Which country in the world has the highest polio rate and what is the cost of one vaccine?

StataLover · 20/12/2010 20:24

claig

because you have a window of opportunity to vaccinate after you have been exposed.

Of course it's POSSIBLE to go without. But you just might die.

claig · 20/12/2010 20:25

Then I would research how many people suffered side effects from the rabies jab before making my decision.

StataLover · 20/12/2010 20:27

The only way you can eradicate polio is through mass immunisation.

Once global elimination is achieved, there's no need to vaccinate and it can be stopped. Surely, then, the pharma companies should make sure that global elimination isn't achieved??

Lots of side effects. It's nasty. But so is dying from rabies.

But you have a know - rabies is fatal. And an unknown - long term side effects.

It's a no-brainer for me.

Same logic (although less extreme) is applied to other vaccines.

tryingtobemarypoppins2 · 20/12/2010 20:32

The thing is claig with the greatest of respect, you have a vaccinated safe child and have protection yourself, as far as I am aware you are not a medical professional and whilst it is fine to have an opinion (indeed we are do on here!) I do get worried these comments you are making must terrify any parent about to vacciant for the first time.

Have you heard of the possible link between Hodgkins lymphoma and the polio vaccine, due to one of its ingredients, the monkey virus (simian virus), SV40?

If the link is true, then Hodgkins manifested years after the vaccines were given.

Leonie

No, you might not develop rabies. all you know is that you might have been exposed.

what about tetanus if you trod on a rusty nail?

claig · 20/12/2010 20:38

tryingtobemarypoppins2, don't worry, it's not just me who has doubts. According to the newspapers, the majority of doctors and nurses also refused to have the swine flu vaccine. They know more about it than I do.

Statalover, what country has the highest rate of polio and what does one vaccine shot cost?

StataLover · 20/12/2010 20:42

Leonie

Yes, I know. You may have reasons for making that decision for your children as you clearly believe them to be at higher risk. I've always been open to the possibility of small sub-groups with higher risks. It can happen and be hidden in the extremely low risk in the general population. You HOPE your decision was correct and the gamble pays off. I hope for you.

That does NOT mean that mass vaccination is wrong or that an unimmunised society is healthier. Your children are benefiting from herd immunity so you should be glad that other people's children are being immunised.

Do you think eradication of smallpox was a good thing?

LeonieDelt - Patronising how?

StataLover · 20/12/2010 20:44

To be fair to claig even though I couldn't disagree more with her, she hasn't said anything that couldn't be found on some anti-vax website and she has never tried to pass herself off as being a medical profession unlike some of the quacks on those websites. Although I agree in general that these messages are highly irresponsible.

Sorry the SV40 virus in a former polio vaccine has a possible link with non-Hodgkins lymphoma, not Hodgkins lymphoma.

StataLover · 20/12/2010 20:46

claig

I linked to the site showing countries with high levels of polio. I don't know how much one dose of polio vaccine costs. It would depend on a lot of factors. What point would you like to make?

tryingtobemarypoppins2 · 20/12/2010 20:46

Thus the problem with google me thinks! Too much information from quacks!

StataLover · 20/12/2010 20:49

Leonie

I read all the posts. i think there are some suggestions in the literature that there may be a subgroup who are at higher risk of complications from vaccines. It's not definite. Living in a highly vaccinated society, if I were in your position, I may have done the same, I don't know. But you don't know for sure. And if you think you do then you're mistaken.

claig · 20/12/2010 20:50

Do you think that the Daily Mail was irresponsible because it was the only British newspaper to publish the leaked letter about the swine flu vaccine link to a killer nerve disease

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1206807/Swine-flu-jab-link-killer-nerve-disease-Leaked-letter-reveals-concern-neurologists-25-deaths-America.html

or do you think it was informing the public?

StataLover · 20/12/2010 20:51

I think the DM is very irresponsible and not just about vaccines.
