I just ran to answer the house phone thinking that it must be important this time of night (had to run - DS is sleeping - its 11.10pm! Plus mum and dad are away and DH is working nights) and it was a bloody recorded message about PPI!!!

I was really worried for a second!

AIBU to find the company that does this and ram said phone down their bleeding neck!!!!

Angry

(PS, does anyone know how to stop these calls? I'm already ex-directory)

contact the telephone preference servce and register with them (you can do it online) - if you keep getting them, note the number on redial and report it.

Ex-directory doesn;t prevent people form ringing you once your number is out there (if if previous owners weren;t ex directory).

Should stop UK companies but overeas ones are not bound by TOS but should pretty much stop most.

QueenGigantaurofMnet · 15/12/2010 23:21

I just had one of those too.

I did the cats bum face down the phone.

I put the phone down before catching the name of teh company otherwise i would be ringing them to shout CUNT down the phone at them

granhands · 15/12/2010 23:21

Hi, google "stop unwanted phone calls", that comes up with loads of things.

I registered with the mail preference service, that helped (but it was ages ago).

telephone preference service
I haven't had a recorded message call since i registered.

thumbplumpuddingwitch · 15/12/2010 23:22

God, they just keep getting worse and worse, don't they. Soon people won't have landlines because of this ridiculous level of intrusion.

FiveColdRingsForSolo · 15/12/2010 23:22

I'm Angry for you.

Kewcumber · 15/12/2010 23:33

the recorded messgae is now a requirement - previously you would have had a hang up. Its because the company are using autmoated diallers and they bank on a set percentage of calls actually going through and make the number of calls on an automated dialler to feed the right number of calls to their call centre. But sometimes it doesn;t work and the call goes through wihtout a person available to take the call. Rules are now that you have to have a message syaong who you are and you must give a number if people dial 1471 afterwards.

Elderly people in particular were getting very spooked by the hang-ups and thought people were stalking them"!

Kewcumber · 15/12/2010 23:34

mobiles get called to thumbwithc - no escape there if you have given your number out unwittingly.

thumbplumpuddingwitch · 15/12/2010 23:36

Well I kept getting calls on my UK mobile from a couple of numbers but labelled them so I didn't answer them. At least with mobiles you can tell if it's your DH/family/friend, so you can decide to ignore it if not! Not everyone has caller display on their landphone.

AuntiePickleBottom · 15/12/2010 23:40

everytime you give out your phone number especially on insurance site make sure you tick the box that states you don't want to recieve call ect

shirleyhyypia · 16/12/2010 00:09

Am already registered with telephone preference service, DH did it when the calls kept waking me up when I was preg and not getting any sleep anyway. Forgot that til you suggested it, lol Xmas Smile

The calls did stop for a while, its in the last week or so that they've started again, and its the same message, over and over again. Am always careful to tick the "do not contact" box, and give my mob number as much as possible anyway so I can screen.

Unfortunately, no landline isnt an option. :( My house is in some sort of electromagnetic field (my theory, not officially, lol) and I have no signal inside. Fine out the garden and in the street, just not in the house!! (all networks, have tried them all over the years!) And with a baby and shift working hubby, I need to be contactable without going out the garden.

You may need to renew with the telephone preference service. I understand it lapses after so long, about a year I believe, which may explain why the calls start up again.

I have developed a voice with these calls, the kind that could freeze the sun, and rarely now get return calls. Grin Even though I can't really do this voice when speaking to people I know!

sparklyjewlz · 16/12/2010 09:09

Thanks, Kewcumber; I just registered with TPS and it only took a minute.

EauRudolph · 16/12/2010 09:10

I just tried to re-register my number and it said it was already registered, it's definitely been a year since I registered.

This is a good site for finding out who called you and there are usually some suggestions from other users on how to get rid of them.

Also, have you tried googling your phone number? I know it sounds odd but I used to get people trying to send faxes at all hours and I found out that my phone number used to be the fax number of a company that went bust and hadn't bothered telling people Hmm so I spent about a week emailing websites asking them to take my number down. Things did improve then.

shirleyhyypia · 16/12/2010 13:52

Thanks guys, I'll try contacting the company direct next time it happens.

(PS was less than a year since we registered so cant have lapsed)

Don't know how old your DS is, but if he is a baby and you are worried about getting him back to sleep or disrupting his sleep patterns etc could you put your ringer on silent when he goes to bed? You could tell people who might need to reach you (PILs, siblings, etc) to ring your mobile then.

theexample · 16/12/2010 13:58

If you bought what they were selling they wouldn't call back. If it's a recorded message and you can't even buy what they are selling, then something must be wrong with the machine. you need a Mouskatool!

jessiealbright · 16/12/2010 14:05

We got a "private number" on a mobile at around 11 last night. They rang off but not before they woke up the children. I wonder if it was the same b*.
