My DD ( 14 ) often loudly sniffs( snorts ) when her nose is blocked. I have told her that most people find this habit off putting and unattractive. My husband claims this is a cultural thing and not such a big deal. I think she needs to know which habits are anti social. Do other people think this is an unpleasant habit or AIBU ?

Which culture would that be? Seriously, I've lived in many different countries and I've seen close one nostril and snot out of the free one, but never sniffing.
YANBU. It is nasty, DD knows that she blows all her snot out, I have told her that if she sniffs it in, it will stay in her head and rot.

Meant to add that my husband is German. He claims it is not a bad habit in Germany ( not sure I believe him ) I know it is acceptable in Japan, but pretty sure most people in UK dislike it.

I have given tissues to random sniffers on trains and busses.
It is revolting and should be banned!!!!

Tell her to carry tissues with her. Everytime she sniffs tell her not too.

Sniffing is like nose picking. To be when alone and in private.

Tell her "STOP FUCKING WELL SNIFFING" every time she does it. Back it up with a plate/other solid object thrown across the room at her. If she continues, tell her all the snot she's inhaling will give her a stinking cough, and the stuff she swallows (uurrggh gross gross gross) will damage teh lining of her stomach. It might be true!

Is it all the time or just when she has a cold? I ask because DSS has allergic rhinitis and he does this a lot, especially first thing in the morning.

It makes me feel sick, a real pet hate and we're always telling him to blow his nose. He reckons there's nothing to blow but it doesn't sound like it. Bleuugh.

YANBU I told my dad to stop coughing yesterday Grin

Sniffing drives me wild with fury - I sympathise. I once moved seats on a train three times because of sniffers. Tell her she'll never get a boyfriend if she sniffs and her friends will drop her, or something Grin

What is it with the claim that "I try to blow but nothing comes out"? Surely if there is enough snot in your nose to sniff it then it is possible it blow it out, or am I missing something? DH does that. He says that I have a short fuse and am intolerant because I find the way he snorts snot disgusting. He sniffs all the time and refuses to carry a tissue and when I hand him one, he lets out an elaborate sigh as though I have assigned him a very arduous task. I have considered divorce over this issue.

IloveJudgeJudy · 15/12/2010 09:28

My DS (12) is the same. He sniffs and sniffs and sniffs. I hand him a tissue. He tries to blow his nose and, seemingly, nothing comes out. I've been there when he does it.

I agree, it is one of the most annoying habits and anti-social. OP, your DH is wrong. If you lived in Germany, then fine, but if you live in the UK, then not fine.

ullainga · 15/12/2010 09:37

Actually in some Asian countries sniffing is considered ok, whereas blowing your nose is very impolite. Not so in Germany though.

Drives me nuts, I have offered tissues at meetings and on the plane as well. Especially fun if the person who has been doing the best hippo-impersonations says about the offer of a tissue "Oh no thanks, I'm fine". Well, you might be for now but another snort and your life is in danger!

I hate this too!
We had a good family friend who was a teacher who did it, so when i told my kids off they said "Well xxx does it!"
Grr.
I would just say that lots of people including your mother, think it sounds disgusting, and please will they not do it in front of me, because I really do not like it.
