To hate Fairytale of New York?

Hate it. hate the drunken late night in a pub singalong, hate the way everyone bloody has it on their Christmas top ten songs or whatever. Hate the lachyrymosity (sp?) of it. And that singer's teeth, always see them as soon as the song starts.

Also feel that the whole 'you're an old slut on junk' bit is written for shock value.

I just cannot stand it. I'd rather poke spoons in my ears than hear this bloody dirge any more.

LOL re M1, narky

mayorquimby · 15/12/2010 13:03

DP likes The Pogues but they don't do it for me. "

OUT!!!!
GET OUT!!

Go listen to Rum, Sodomy and The Lash and think about what you've said

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 15/12/2010 13:10

The best thing about it us that there is no nypd choir;)

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 15/12/2010 13:13

Just like Christmas by Low is the best Christmas song of all time as everyone knows.

mayorquimby · 15/12/2010 13:14

nope and the NYPD band didn't know Galway bay so they played a different song for the video

ShoppingDays · 15/12/2010 13:15

YANBU

NetworkGuy · 15/12/2010 13:23

MQ - at the time it came out, I don't think the NYPD actually had a choir anyway!

PuppyMonkey · 15/12/2010 14:24

Yes yes, but

The boys from the NYPD choir who actually dont exist
Still singing Galway Bay, although if you watch the video they are doing a different tune
And the bells were ringing out etc

Doesn't have the same ring to it .Grin

poshsinglemum · 15/12/2010 15:05

I like it. And last christmas.

JosieRosie · 15/12/2010 15:20

I loathe it from the bottom of my heart. Sentimental trash. I hate 'Last Xmas' too but would rather listen to that on repeat all day long than listen to FONY once. I'm on your side OP, even if not many others on here are! Grin

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 15/12/2010 16:07

It may be many things, but one thing a song about your dreams turning to alchohol sodden shit ISN'T is sentimental.

discobeaver · 15/12/2010 16:09

Heh, at least some of us have taste Josie!

mayorquimby, the main flaw in your exhortation to soapydishcloth to listen to 'Rum Sodomy and the Lash' is that it is by the Pogues. dishcloth already said she didn't like the Pogues.

That's like telling someone who doesn't like cheese to eat a fondue. It's still cheese.

You are all mad, it is a great song. Nothing captures the true spirit of Christmas like two drunk angry people bringing up all the bile and resentent of the previous few decades and spitting it at each other.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 15/12/2010 16:19

Last Christmas is a pretty good song - and pretty dark as well.

ElfPantsAtMidnightMass · 15/12/2010 16:29

Stop the Cavalry & Christmas (W)rapping are my other two favourites. Stop the Cavalry has nuclear fallout in it for a start, yippee.

My parents usually play the Sex Pistols on Christmas Eve to get us all into the festive spirit (true)

mrsmillsfanclub · 15/12/2010 16:37

I can't stand fairytale of new york either. Far too much mumbling. I do love last christmas though Blush.
Mind you, this is coming from someone who believed, until they were 15 BlushBlush that they would one day marry George Michael.
Yes, really!

strandedatseasonsgreetings · 15/12/2010 16:40

I have been re-reading this thread since it grrrrrew and reminded of some of the awfulness that is British music at Christmas time.

There are so many OTHER Christmas songs out there in the world what a shame they still insist on playing the same ones every single bloody year.

For anyone who wants something different

CaptainBarnacles · 15/12/2010 16:43

YANBU - I loathe it too. Sentimental Oirish rubbish - perfectly summed up by the NYPD choir line.

I would much rather listen to Last Christmas.

If you want a depressing Christmas song about love gone wrong, you need .

southeastastra · 15/12/2010 16:53

bad timing for this thread as isn't kirsty's anniversary of death around this time?

anything overplayed will irk imo though

lottiejenkins · 15/12/2010 18:35

Yes its ten years ago on the 20th,,,,,,,Sad I am a huge Kirsty fan. I have a friend who used to work for her and he said she was the loveliest person......... The guy who killed her allegedly got a boathand to confess to driving the boat. She pushed her son out of the way and the boat hit her.....Sad

southeastastra · 15/12/2010 19:08

i'm a fan too, she got me through some dark days of the 80s when i went out with some unsavoury types!

i have her box set and the later music (latino stuff) was brilliant, so much we will never hear :(

WannabeNigella · 15/12/2010 20:15

YABVU it is the best Christmas song ever. Fact.

A1980 · 22/12/2010 00:03

Sorry to bump this but I can't resist:

I prefer this version of it:

YABU by the way, I love that song
