To hate Fairytale of New York?

Hate it. hate the drunken late night in a pub singalong, hate the way everyone bloody has it on their Christmas top ten songs or whatever. Hate the lachyrymosity (sp?) of it. And that singer's teeth, always see them as soon as the song starts.

Also feel that the whole 'you're an old slut on junk' bit is written for shock value.

I just cannot stand it. I'd rather poke spoons in my ears than hear this bloody dirge any more.

Oh no YANBU - awful awful shouty tuneless drivel. Let's have a (very small by the look of it) gathering and (metaphorically) smash copies of it.

Caboodle · 14/12/2010 18:50

Have just dug out Xmas CD with this on....then saw your thread Grin Putting it on now...

MardyQuickFollowThatStar · 14/12/2010 18:50

YANBU - the quality of the singing is shite. Too much swooping around and failing to hit any of the notes bang on pitch.

discobeaver · 14/12/2010 18:53

Caboodle, that's like some sort of Christmas voodoo or something...it's playing isn't it? My ears are bleeding...aaarghh..

I love Fairytale of NY and Stop the Cavalry

Mists · 14/12/2010 19:01

I used to loathe Fairytale of New York but that was probably because my parents and their friends loved the cheery Oirish fiddles without ever listening to the lyrics.

Don't mind it now. I like the sense of hopelessness about it and it always makes me feel better when Christmas is heading straight for tits up territory.

I love the opportunity to screech about people being utter cunts whilst ostensibly being festive, I can't be the only one surely? Xmas Shock

FairyTaleOfNewYork · 14/12/2010 19:01

f:(

FairyTaleOfNewYork · 14/12/2010 19:01
Xmas Sad
GinSlingSlubbersArseFellOut · 14/12/2010 19:06

Totally with you OP.

Ghastly, hideous dirge of a song.

Mists · 14/12/2010 19:08

I love you FTONY!

BonniePrinceBilly · 14/12/2010 19:10

aww, poor fairy. Apologise OP!

NetworkGuy · 14/12/2010 19:12

YANBU - I detest the whole month of December when it comes to what is on any music radio station (or local BBC stations for that matter) as they give excessive airtime to some 100 or so tunes, F... of NY being one of the ones I hate most beaten only by Slade and wizzard (and probably every other one mentioned on this thread!)

I will be listening to audio books (typically 6 to 8 hours by Ian Rankin to free me of any music or TV shows from before Christmas Eve to a few days after. Might go out on NYE to some pub in town, but that will mostly be to see how legless inebriated the youngsters get...

My Christmas music hate list:

Merry Christmas everybody (Slade)
I wish it could be Christmas every day (Wizzard)
Fairy tale of New York
Happy Christmas (War is Over)
Mistletoe and Wine Cliff
Wonderful Christmastime

Santa Claus is coming to Town
Rocking around the Christmas tree
Lonely this Christmas
Last Christmas
Stop the Cavalry
Walking in the Air Aled
Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow
Sleigh Ride
Silent Night
Santa Baby (Kylie)
The First Noel
Frosty the Snowman
Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Driving home for Christmas

MrsThisIsTheCadillacOfNailguns · 14/12/2010 19:17

It is the only Christmas song I like.Years ago I worked in retail and for weeks on end had to listen to Christmas songs on loop from 9am til 9pm.This has left me with a complete hatred for Christmas songs, apart from FONY.

Sadly DH loves cheesy Christmas crap,so inflicts it on me.

Truckulent · 14/12/2010 19:24

Merry Christmas everyone by Shakin Stevens. Utter crap.

I'd like a Christmas song about the hype, over-indulgence, all over in a flash, highly unlikely religious festival it is. Can't see it selling though.

Snow is falling,
Pipes are freezing,
Children arguing,
Adults drinking,
Merry winter solstice everyone

No one else like my link?

Just me then?

MardyQuickFollowThatStar · 14/12/2010 19:25

Network Guy - you probably want to add Santa's Elves to that list and then it will be about right.

Zondra · 14/12/2010 19:46

I hate it,too!
To be honest I never enjoy listening to a bunch of drunken tramps slurring away singing & least of all Christmas time.

Hate how it's "cool" to like it,too. Total emperor's new clothes/bandwagon nonsense.

It's utter shite & if you hadn't heard it before & were woken up in the early hours of Christmas morning to some drunken tramp shouting about "old sluts on junk", you'd call the police or throw an old boot out the window at them.

OhLittleTownOfShirley · 14/12/2010 19:47

YABVU

Zondra · 14/12/2010 19:51

Oh, & I know it is not the done thing to refer to other threads, etc, etc, but, read elsewhere on here today that it is never acceptable to use the term slut & I imagine most mners feel the same about "faggot",too.
How is it when it is in this song it is all just fabulous fun?

Anyway, I'm away to get Wham! & Slade on...

NinkyNonker · 14/12/2010 20:00

I love it. I get all teary and sentimental when I hear it. (But I do that a lot at the mo to be fair.)

LunaticFringe- Phil Spector's Christmas album is immense!!!

OhLittleTownOfShirley · 14/12/2010 20:13

This thread has even got me playing "Here Come's Santa Claus" by Bob Dylan.

Now, that is one weird christmas album.

taffetazatyousantaclaus · 14/12/2010 20:16

Oh I can't bear it either, YANBU, def. I remember when it came out thinking what shite it was and looking at people wondering wtf they were doing slurring along to it.

I also hate Auld Lang Syne.
