To hate Fairytale of New York?

Hate it. hate the drunken late night in a pub singalong, hate the way everyone bloody has it on their Christmas top ten songs or whatever. Hate the lachyrymosity (sp?) of it. And that singer's teeth, always see them as soon as the song starts.

Also feel that the whole 'you're an old slut on junk' bit is written for shock value.

I just cannot stand it. I'd rather poke spoons in my ears than hear this bloody dirge any more.

Sorry, love it. And it's not its fault it's overplayed.
Can I just tell you all though that No.1 Christmas tune ever is 'When a child is born' Johnny Mathis. Oh, or possibly 'Mary's boy child' Boney M. Am not religious but I do like a nod to the greatst story ever told and both those songs have some magic in them

Laska · 14/12/2010 20:33

YABVVVVVU!!!!!

lottiejenkins · 14/12/2010 20:37

YABVVVVVU!!! Its one of my most favourite Christmas Songs. Its ten years next week since Kirsty died Xmas Sad The song that i loathe at Christmas is Rocking Around The Christmas Tree by Mel Smith and Kim Wilde. I was set to do serious damage to someone last week when i was out shopping if i'd heard it once more!! Xmas Angry

OhLittleTownOfShirley · 14/12/2010 20:42

oh and in one of those weird coikydink things I went out the back garden and heard FTONY blaring out.

Turns out it was the Rotary Club Santa doing his rounds and we've just been out in jamas and slankets to shake his hand and give him some dirty cash.

So YAY!

Bunbaker · 14/12/2010 20:49

"Poor old Kirsty though"

Yes. I was particularly sad when I heard about her death as I went to school with her.

Fairytale of New York is one of my favourite Christmas songs and I love the Pogues.

taffetazatyousantaclaus · 14/12/2010 20:49

OhLittleTownofShirley - I don't understand a word of that, eg wtf is coikydink

OhLittleTownOfShirley · 14/12/2010 20:59

COINKYDINK - coincidence

FTONY - Fairy Tale of New York

Jamas - Night Attire

Slanket - Blanket with arm holes

Dirty Cash - Money

Yay - Hoorrah!

taffetazatyousantaclaus · 14/12/2010 21:00

But on Christmas Day he does wear the hat

He looks like a festive Meldrew Xmas Grin

NetworkGuy · 14/12/2010 21:47

MardyQuickFollowThatStar - fortunately I have missed "Santa's Elves" so don't know how bad it is. Forgot to include Elton's contribution, but just fired up Spotify and searched for Elves, and came across 'artists' "Santa's Farting Elves" (Album 'A Farting Christmas') and then "The Hot Buttered Elves" with (among others on 'Unwrapped') 'Satan Claus' and 'Sodomy Christmas' on about lube etc etc !

I know I might sound a bit grumpy with my anti-Christmas music list, but these seem to have gone out of their way to take the piss...

christmaseve · 14/12/2010 21:50

YABU I love it. Also like Christmas Rap by the Waitresses Grin.

NetworkGuy · 14/12/2010 21:57

AbsofCroissant - working in a record shop must have been absolute hell. Have just seen some of the most dreary Christmas compilations on Spotify and could not cope with a collection running to about 100 tracks, let alone listen to that day after day for more than a week...

Still, glad I am not the only one who dislikes many of these songs, but have found a couple of versions (different artists, similar words) called "Christmas Rappin'" which are, for me, much more fun...

Anyway, off to enjoy some Baileys... night all.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 14/12/2010 22:08

Abs. I see your working in a record shop and listening to the compilation CD's and raise you working in a toy shop and listening to the one CD we sell, 8 hours a day, 7 days a week since the beginning of November. They arnt even the real songs, they are crappy cheapo covers. Sad

OP, YABU I would give my right arm to be able to listen to Fairytale of New York instead of the crap good value for money cover CD I have to listen to! Grin

nogreythatmatters · 14/12/2010 23:22

Its a great legacy for Kirsty. We lost her far too early - she was such a towering talent.

mummytoatribe · 14/12/2010 23:25

YANBU!

Over rated, overplayed CRAP!

Santassnowyoldclothcatpuss · 14/12/2010 23:50

YABVVVVU! It's great! Second only to Greg Lake! I actually quite like Christmas music! (cliff and wizard not included!) George Michaels latest Xmas song was pretty good too!

LynetteScavo · 14/12/2010 23:54

YABU... All Christmas songs are fabulous!

DeckTheHallWithBowlsOfPomBears · 14/12/2010 23:59

YANBU, it's shite

beautyspot · 15/12/2010 00:07

It's the only "xmas" song I like. I love it.

mayorquimby · 15/12/2010 00:50

"Also feel that the whole 'you're an old slut on junk' bit is written for shock value."

The greatest Irish lyricist of his generation didn't write lyrics only for shock value.

lottiejenkins · 15/12/2010 08:19

Ive been to see Kirstys bench too. She wrote a song called Soho Square. When she died her fans asked her family if they could put a bench in SS. On the nearest Sunday to her birthday in October people gather there to remember her. I also reccomend the book her Mum wrote about her too!!

Fibilou · 15/12/2010 08:43

I loathe it too
