We shall get by on under 300 quid, hopefully

I can see that shopping can be good therapy; but a bit costly if done on plastic

Probably around AUD$3,000 this year, we have been living overseas for the last 5 years so have gone crazy with gifts for everyone and are having 3 Christmas 'Days' here and another 2 at various inlaws/relatives.

FattyArbuckel · 15/12/2010 06:31

Wow apocalypse, I hope that includes a nicepressie for you?!!

valleyqueen · 15/12/2010 07:55

About £120 on dd
£70 on family and friends (we have secret Santa as there are loads of us)
Xmas dinner is being done by my sil but I am making the apple sauce, cranberry sauce and mince pies. So about £25
Boxing day at my mums so that's free :)
Cards and decorations about £10

Not bad for me actually.

SantasENormaSnob · 15/12/2010 09:22

Over 1k.

No plastic.

ProfYaffle · 15/12/2010 09:34

I'm not sure but I'd guess at about £600 - £1,000. We buy presents/food in dribs and drabs from about September onwards so it's not in one big hit and isn't done on credit.

I have noticed that there seems to be an inverse relationship between how much I spend and my disposable income, or maybe it is my age?

I certainly used to spend a lot more on presents when I was a student, which was beyond riduculous looking back. I think I used to spend around £300 then [early nineties] on people that I now spend £0 on [by mutual agreement]. I most definitely could not afford it - I just felt like I 'had' to.

Anyway, I now spend around £200 on DC and about £80 on other people. I guess more on food but I don't really notice that.

maighdlin · 15/12/2010 12:43

our xmas is working out at about £400, who is getting a present is getting and we are having a fantastic dinner, am not being cheap just not wasting money. Its amazing how many friends will agree on "i don't buy you, you don't buy me".

I got talking to my dad about xmas and one year he and my mum spent 14k. [fainting emoticon] i remember that xmas and i am prepared to bet that i will have just as good if not better a xmas this year as it will be the first with my wee family, (plus have the snow bombe from markseys to eat my way through and a a litre and a half of martini material Grin)

taffetazatyousantaclaus · 15/12/2010 18:31

mai - how can they spend £14k if you don't mind me asking?

MegBusset · 15/12/2010 18:48

About £150 total on DCs (both preschoolers so a couple of bigger shared presents and a stocking each)
About £100 total on DH (a few small things not one big thing)
About £60 total on GPs (we have only got each other token gift since DC came along)
Don't get for siblings, or nieces/nephews, or anyone else

Bumpsadaisie · 15/12/2010 18:51

£375 -

£150 for presents for me, DH and DD (18mths)

£150 on presents for rest of family (12 people)

£75 on cards, postage, wine, chocs (to take to family) and tree.

We don't host Xmas Day or anything like that so our costs are quite modest. My mother is doing passion fruit and campari sorbet for pudding on Xmas day and that alone must have cost her £25!

Littlefish · 15/12/2010 18:52

After consulting my spreadsheet (which shows me what I've spent for the last 8 years!), I have spent £560 this year on all the presents (25 people).

I haven't done the food shop yet, but I expect it will be about £150.00.

Drink: It depends on how many bottles of wine I am given as end of term presents Wink

deliciousdevilwoman · 15/12/2010 19:01

So far I have spent
£130 each on presents for my grown up DTS's
£120 DH
£100 for my sis's 5 DC
£30 Sis
£100 on DSS and DSD (I always buy them separate presents from DH)
£30 on PIL (ditto above)
Will probably spend around £150 on food and drink for Boxing Day when our respective DC's will be visiting. DH and I are spending Christmas day with PIL so don't need to shop for that

maighdlin · 15/12/2010 21:41

taffeta holidays and spending money for me and my three sisters and my aunt and laptops and loads of other things. 4.5k was jewellery for my mum. fecking mental looking back on it.

PressureDrop · 15/12/2010 21:42

About £600 when all is said and done. Too much, really, but we have a big family to feed and buy gifts for.

tingletangle · 15/12/2010 23:29

I agree seatrek, I Spent much more on presents as a student or a single mum on benefits. I did go through, what for me, was a vulgar stage of spending thousands but grew out of that.

I spend much more on food now and don't really do presents.
