to grimace when people describe items of clothes

as 'pieces'. As in: "I have a few pieces from Primark's Summer 08 Collection"

YANBU. Sets my teeth on edge.

saffy85 · 13/12/2010 15:28

YANBU. Especially if/when said about Primarni Grin I don't get the whole "pieces" thing. Isn't it "items of clothing"? I have no fashion sense/style though.

PaisleyLeaf · 13/12/2010 15:30

Can you have a few bits from Primark?
Or even bits and pieces?

otchayaniye · 13/12/2010 15:34

bits, yes. Pieces -- sounds as if your clothes are museum exhibits.

YANBU at all.

Equally irritating is the trend for fashion-types to recommend wearing items like 'the wide legged trouser' or 'the patent boot'. Last time I checked they were plural, not singular.

proudfoot · 13/12/2010 20:15

YABU. "Pieces" and the singular that Shodan is talking about are quite funny IMO. I would smirk if I heard someone talking like that but certainly wouldn't grimace!

cubbie · 13/12/2010 20:18

I was once told in a shoe shop when I was about 15 that all I needed to go with a particular pair of shoes, was a dark tight!!

I asked, a dark tight what???

Didn't get a reply but my Dad and I laughed heartily snd still do!

DullWomenHaveImmaculateHomes · 13/12/2010 20:20

Laughing heartily with you cubbie Xmas Grin

Vallhala · 13/12/2010 20:21

YANBU. "Pieces" is almost as irritating an expression as "product". As in, "If you don't want to use the straighteners you can put some product on your hair and curl it".

"Product"? FFS, it's mousse or conditioner or shampoo or something... whatever it is, it is not bloody "product"!

hairyfairylights · 13/12/2010 20:22

And "trouser" eugh!

skippingturtle · 13/12/2010 20:22

They're the same sort of people who use the word 'fun' when they mean 'interesting', or 'nice' e.g. "that zebra print coat is fun, isn't it?". Itching teeth.

BitOfFun · 13/12/2010 20:23

The kind of person who buys pieces must surely live in a 'property' rather than a house?

stillbobbysgirl · 13/12/2010 20:25

they are the same people who when they buy a "piece" in a bright colour, it "pops"

animula · 13/12/2010 20:26

It is so truly awful.

I see it as an expression of the deep yearning in every lowly fashion journalist's heart to be taken seriously.

"I'm a fashion journalist - I am a curator of the present, of the moment."

And those features in magazines, where they have super wardrobes, with shoes arranged like art exhibits.

And yes, I know that fashion can stray into art, and sculpture/engineering especially ... but not here, down below the high, high couture heavens. There are no ^pieces" in Primark. Unless it's in Paisleyleaf's "bits and pieces" sense.

It is a cringe.

ItsKurriiiistmas · 13/12/2010 20:28

Yabu. I am wearing a tee shirt with a monkey on cotton piece from 'Nouvelle Regardez' and a straight leg jean.

If it turns parky, I'll put on my charity shop jumper woolen piece.

BelligerentGhoul · 13/12/2010 20:29

Pops - I hate pops. And I hate it when people say 'that eye colour makes my eyes really pop' - as they smear bits of exploded eyeball down their silly cheeks.

Pieces - I have pieces perfectly good word to describe cake/eight/cloth - but not of clothes.

BelligerentGhoul · 13/12/2010 20:30

Sorry - my final line didn't make any sense at all. I meant to say 'pieces is a perfectly good word to describe...'

Vallhala · 13/12/2010 20:32

Aren't Trinny and whatsherface, they of the nice trouser and matching shoe fame, also guilty of remarking that a victim woman has "a nice tit"?

Panzee · 13/12/2010 20:32

Oh I like this.
This evening I am wearing a casual ensemble: a long woollen piece and a jog pant teamed with a fun stripy slipper.

EmmaBemma · 13/12/2010 20:32

I knew you were going to say "pieces" when I clicked on this! I hate it too. So pretentious.

DunderMifflin · 13/12/2010 20:34

My SIL doesn't have pictures on her wall, she has installations.

YANBU.

Equally loathe "to rock a look".

CristinaTheAstonishing · 13/12/2010 20:43

Where does 'team' come from in the clothes context? Is it equivalent with matching?
