got to leave for yet another birthday party and realised we've run out of suitable gifts for a boy. so been looking through some of dd's books..! either that or pick up a box of malteser's en route..which won't be wrapped

dd goes to very fancy nursery school and all other parents are super wealthy so the book maybe least embaressing gift

AIBU to consider? what else can i give? cash in a card would be wrong too!

This birthday gift business is a nightmare. We live in a really wealthy area and party gifts can be £15 or more from some people. A new family moved in and my son invited their son to his party. He gave a small Lego set - Perfect! It was so refreshing. I hope everyone follows on.

I think a book that looks new is absolutely fine. I hope dd enjoys the party!

I loved Not Now Bernard great present. If it looks new you might as well give it as a present, they won't know the difference. I'm giving my brother a couple of comedy DVDs for Christmas that my husband had doubles of - feeling rather tight but they are still in the plastic wrapping and he'll like them so why not?

I remember my mum used to keep a box of generic birthday cards and small toys for unexpected party invitations - I think I might have to start this when my LO arrives as hearing from friends who already have kids it sounds like they have pretty active social lives from a young age and it could get pretty stressful!

My daughter got quite a few lots of money stuck in cards for her birthday from boys, whose mums obviously couldn't think what to get! I didn't mind at all, but you know your social circle...

How about asking your DS what charity he would like to support and having a donation box at his party. On the invitation you could put DS has kindly decided he does not want you to bring him a present but to put a donation of your choice into the box for his chosen charity?

If it looks new, give it. I've done the same. For the future it's worth having a look on thebookpeople.co.uk site. You can buy sets of 10 books for £9.99 - total value of about £60. Then you can put them away & give 1 or 2 individual books as a present for future parties. They sell v good children's books & they all have the rrp on the back so you won't look a cheapskate.

thanks for replies, well didn't have nerve to give a 2nd hand book or any non girly paper at hand.
we arrived a little late, party at a massive soft play place. everyone dumped boots in a tub and pressies on table. i was fully prepared to lie (eek i'm not good at lying so was very nervous) and pretend i'd forgotten the card/book voucher but the mum wasn't very friendly and hardly spoke to us..
so now i'm wondering whether to even bother..how awful am i??
