URGENT help needed with carseat stuck in car

Flossie69 · 06/12/2010 15:56

Hi posting here as need urgent response.

I have a rear facing car seat - a britax first class plus, and seat belt is one of those retracting ones.

So I have tried to move car seat, but seat belt has retracted around the seat belt, and now I can't get it out, or fix it back in, or anything!

Does anyone know how I can get the seat belt to un-grip as it were, so I can pull it out?

Don't want to resort to cutting it - there must be a way, surely?

thanks

Tip the carseat forwards towards the back of the seat it faces, that should then give you a gap to slide the belt over the top of it.

nellieisstilltired · 06/12/2010 15:59

pull gently on the bit attatched to the wind up thing(by seat).

dont yank it, that makes it retract further. then thread the seat belt through whilst supporting slack bit.

you need 10 hands and patience.

ilove · 06/12/2010 15:59

disclaimer take child out before tipping seat forwards!

Flossie69 · 06/12/2010 16:03

Car seat is already totally tipped forward and belt has retracted arouind it. It is one of those that once it starts retracting, it needs to go back all the way before you can pull it out.

I think I am stuffed...

Have a look at where the seatbelt is secured to the car at the end - on floor down by side of chair. it will be bolted down. With a spanner you can undo the bolt.

SlobbyBOB · 06/12/2010 16:13

sounds like it's under interia tension.

Can you lower the seat back back all the way and slide the seat back.

I think I got one stuck years ago.
Unclip the buckle and release the belt seat grippers (if they still use them).

Dont cut it. IF all else fails there should be a plastic covered anchor point between the door and base of the seat. You may be albe to undo this with spanner as last resort.

June2009 · 06/12/2010 16:17

is it one of those where you have to flatten the buckle against the chair (not towards the higher bit of the seat, towards the bit where the legs are resting) so that the belts will move?

FindingMyMojo · 06/12/2010 16:31

are you parked on a hill? If so try moving car to flat ground & then try gently pulling seat belt? Sometimes they will 'lock' when on incline.

Tiredmumno1 · 06/12/2010 16:44

Dont undo it with a spanner, not a good idea.

are you still stuck op?

talleyrand · 06/12/2010 17:07

why not tiredmumno1?

undo bolt..
free seat belt ..
remove car seat..
do bolt back up..

simples.

Tiredmumno1 · 06/12/2010 17:13

If its a newer car, seat belts have two explosive gas canisters to retract both parts of the seatbelt, so if you undo it you can cause alot of damage, and hurt yourself in the process. you would also lose the belt into the side pillar.

its for safety which should only be touched by a professional,

thats why, hth

Immediate urgency over as friend brought DS1 back from school. DH back now and doing his best. If he is unable to sort it, I will be going to garage tomorrow.

Thanks for all your replies. Stress levels dropping now :)

hope you sort it op,

just try holding the top of the belt and pushing very gently to try and push a bit back in then pull down again very gently to see if it will start to move slowly, and if it works keep repeating until it unlocks, good luck

Had same problem - can't use this seat rear facing for this reason. Also panicked, but wiggling did release the seat. Seat belt wouldn't budge.

Good luck.

thisisyesterday · 06/12/2010 19:21

can you not undo the seatbelt???

lenats31 · 11/12/2010 12:49

What you have to do every time you put the seat into your car, is to pull the seatbelt all the way out and hold on to it so it does not lock. It may take two people to install the seat then.

once the seatbelt has been routed correctly, yu tighten it and let the rest retract back into the housing.

I have had two cars with these seatbelts. They can kick up a bit of hassle

Shehroze · 08/01/2019 09:36

Have u unstuck the car seat or not?

User758172 · 08/01/2019 09:40

Eight years after the fact, I’m sure she doesn’t remember.
