To have called this gift idea of DP's 'creepy'?

I suspect it was a bit harsh and maybe it was more PFBish but he wanted to frame DS's curls from his 1st hair cut and give them to the doting GP's as a gift for xmas. I feel a bit mean for calling it creepy but it's how it made me feel, I can't put my finger on it. So AIBU in thinking it's not really an appropriate gift and for calling it 'creepy'?

I think they might prefer a picture

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 05/12/2010 22:46

How about mawkish, then?

It is a bit weird, IMO.

pigletmania · 05/12/2010 22:47

YABVU for calling it creepy, why!!! It sounds like a nice idea, I personally would prefer a nice framed picture.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 05/12/2010 22:47

Then again, my Mum still has all my milk teeth Hmm - but then I am an only/pfb (eve though I'm 37!).

ShanahansRevenge · 05/12/2010 22:47

YABU for calling it creepy. It's a little bit...Victorian or something. They were obsessed with hair and things.

I mean...what did he want to DO with them in the frame? Just have them plonked there behind the glass? Or arranged into a little hairy scene?

LoopyLoopsOfSparklyFairyLights · 05/12/2010 22:48

I think creepy too.

sethstarkaddersmum · 05/12/2010 22:48

I wonder if it's the association with Victorian mourning rituals - it's the sort of thing they would have done with a dead child's hair.

you are right about PFBish though. I'm with Nightmare on this.

fedupdownhere · 05/12/2010 22:48

UABU
thats a lovely idea for a gift as a grandparent I would love that as a xmas present

Hassledge · 05/12/2010 22:48

It's creepy as hell. You're right.

dearprudence · 05/12/2010 22:49

YANBU. It's weirdy.

A photograph, or something they've made, or even a handprint, fine. But a bit of hair? What would they do with it?

I am oddly fascinated by those 3D etchings inside glass blocks. He could get them done for the GPs Xmas Grin

SalFresco · 05/12/2010 22:50

YABU. But then, I have the DS's umbillical stumps Grin

thegrudge · 05/12/2010 22:51

It reminds me of Victorian mourning too. I'd rather have a nice tin of biscuits.

CoventryCarole · 05/12/2010 22:51

It is creepy

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 05/12/2010 22:52

"But then, I have the DS's umbillical stumps"

Oh yes, me too. I'd forgotten. And there was me suggesting my mother was weird.

ShanahansRevenge · 05/12/2010 22:52

Hair Art

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 05/12/2010 22:53

it's wanky, I dunno about creepy

BootyMum · 05/12/2010 22:54

Sorry SalFresco but that's disgusting!

Makes me think of that scene in SATC when the cat eats Miranda's son's umbilical stump that had just dropped off... Shudder!

Hassledge · 05/12/2010 22:54

You give locks of hair to your lover if you're in a Victorian melodrama. And as you're clearly not (in a Victorian melodrama), you shouldn't.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 05/12/2010 22:55

Some mixed reactions! Had to LOL at the 'Hairy scene', maybe I could get him to add some toe nail clippings and the umbilical cord stump (which, incidently I have kept, Salfresco, but it's not something I would gift to GP's, however doting) Grin Maybe a PFB body bits collage, would it win the Turner prize do you think?

SalFresco · 05/12/2010 22:55

thereisalightanditnevergoesout my mum also has the milk teeth of me and my two sisters, and they are wrapped in different colours of tissue paper, so she knows who is who Grin

ThoseArtisticTypes · 05/12/2010 22:56

It's not that it's weird but parents need to get their heads out of their arses. Yes the grandparents love their granchildren but they are not consummed with thinking how amazing they are in the same way parents are. Get your MIL a proper Christmas gift for her, not another "isn't my kid amazing" gift! Photo's and hair can be sent at any time of year! Hmm

SalFresco · 05/12/2010 22:56

I wouldn't give the DS's stumps as gifts, no, in fact people don't seem to even want to look at them! Grin

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 05/12/2010 22:57

So, we can both blame our mothers then for our own sentimentality regarding umbilical stumps!! Grin

I just thank goodness I was the only child. My mum wouldn't be able to move for relics, otherwise!

BootyMum · 05/12/2010 22:58

I am surprised that so many of you have kept the umbilical stumps. maybe I am the weird one Grin

BertieBottlesOfMulledWine · 05/12/2010 22:58

My stepmum kept my brother's umbilical stump. And his first bogey.
