To have called this gift idea of DP's 'creepy'?

I suspect it was a bit harsh and maybe it was more PFBish but he wanted to frame DS's curls from his 1st hair cut and give them to the doting GP's as a gift for xmas. I feel a bit mean for calling it creepy but it's how it made me feel, I can't put my finger on it. So AIBU in thinking it's not really an appropriate gift and for calling it 'creepy'?

My great, great aunt died from tuberculosis in 1902. I have a picture of her and a braid of her hair in a locket. I wear it a lot.

Is that mawkish?

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 05/12/2010 23:31

And - when I say giving it as a gift, I mean in a frame for Christmas not just in an envelope as a keepsake. Does that make sense?

yanbu. Photo's of their grandchildren would be better. Locks of hair are for parents.

I buried the dc's stumps in my favourite planter in the garden. I have the stump clips in their memory boxes and wonder if I should re-use them as freezer bag clips.

morethanasong · 06/12/2010 08:27

YANBU. Definitely creepy!

PsecretSantead · 06/12/2010 09:03

Why the bloomin' heck would grandparents want a lock of hair? Frame them a picture.

I have kept DD's cord stump too. I don't normally let visitors know in case, well, in case they think I am the type of person who keeps bits of mummified flesh. Which I am not except for when I am. Grin

BaroqinAroundTheChristmasTree · 06/12/2010 09:14

My best friend (OK she's also DS3's godparent -but still) was bitterly disappointed when DS3 had his first hair cut and wanted to nab the bit that I'd kept!!!

discobeaver · 06/12/2010 09:53

It's all a bit voodoo.

The umblical stumps ... I can't imagine doing that. Why would you keep those? I think keeping the child is enough.

Framed hair as a present is not waht I would want for Christmas. But I'm not a grandparent. Even if I was...still no.

siilk · 06/12/2010 10:13

We did this when we cut DC1's baby curls off We gave them to the grandparents and kept one for ourselves.
We put them in lovely silver frames and put his blonde curl on a black blackground. It actually looks great.

The grandparents loved them.

MaDugHerDecsOut · 06/12/2010 10:22

Ohhh sounds a bit creepy to me to! Dont think my mum would appreciate that gift either.

TyraG · 06/12/2010 10:27

Yeah, that's just weird. I don't understand keeping the stumps either, just ends up looking like poo.

CrazyChristmasLady · 06/12/2010 11:19

I wouldn't say creepy, but definitely weird. What an odd present to give. I know my MIL wouldn't appreciate it, but then she didn't appreciate the professional photo we had done and framed that we gave to her for last Christmas.

"Yeah, that's just weird. I don't understand keeping the stumps either, just ends up looking like poo."

I'm not really sure why I've kept them either. I didn't really meant to - it just sort of happened.

mrsscoob · 06/12/2010 12:19

No I don't think its creepy at all Smile

ChippingIn · 06/12/2010 12:30

No - it's not creepy. I don't think a photo frame is the best idea though. How about a locket? I have a lovely locket with a couple of curls of hair in it :)

The photo frame with a photo and the locket of hair wouldn't be a bad idea though, but the hair in a frame on it's own isn't weird/creepy, but it is a bit 'why'?

Casserole · 06/12/2010 12:57

I couldn't wait for that stump to fall off DS, and you've never seen anyone get to the bin as quick as I did when it finally came off! It is dead flesh, people!

I am having trouble imagining a tiny lock of hair suspended in the middle of a frame.

YANBU, it's weird.
