To have called this gift idea of DP's 'creepy'?

I suspect it was a bit harsh and maybe it was more PFBish but he wanted to frame DS's curls from his 1st hair cut and give them to the doting GP's as a gift for xmas. I feel a bit mean for calling it creepy but it's how it made me feel, I can't put my finger on it. So AIBU in thinking it's not really an appropriate gift and for calling it 'creepy'?

YANBU, very creepy.

pmsl at "hair can be sent at any time of year" Grin

I agree that proper presents are better than hair.

ShanahansRevenge · 05/12/2010 22:59

Grin at SelFresco!

I am looking forward to the day when as a proud Grannie I can say "Got a lovely pair of framed stumps for Christmas!"

PortlyBlackSantaUpTheChimney · 05/12/2010 23:00

I was always told it was incredible bad luck to keep someone's hair.....but then i come from a very superstitious Romany family.

Perhaps because of the association with mourning?

SalFresco · 05/12/2010 23:00

Yes, there is definitely a pattern emerging thereisalight Weirdly, my mum comes across as the most unsentimental person you could meet. Clearly it manifests itself in strange ways Grin

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 05/12/2010 23:04

pmsl Grin

Maybe there is a market here for framed stumps, especially for doting GP's? Sad that no-one is taking an interest in yours Sal, maybe you should make more of an effort with them and display them somewhere more prominent?

First bogey? Now that is creepy!

I feel I have to break the cycle now, for fear of what my own DCs might 'save' in the future.

SalFresco · 05/12/2010 23:06

Perhaps some 3d frames...matured umbilical stumps somewhat resemble beef jerky, and do not lend themselves to a traditional flat frame...am going to Ikea tomorrow, will see what I can find Grin

perfumeditsawonderfullife · 05/12/2010 23:06

My mum asked for ds's old shoes, his first pair. She put them in a box frame and they look so cute.

Not keen on the hair thing, although my gran kept a lock of my sister's in a locket on a chain she wore. I just think it's more something to be done after a death Confused

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 05/12/2010 23:07

Yes - like those frames people put 'first shoes' in? A few inches deep - more of a display case, really.

ThoseArtisticTypes · 05/12/2010 23:07

Our first dog ate DS1's umbilical stump when it fell on the floor. Boak!

SalFresco · 05/12/2010 23:11

Yes, thereisalight exactly what I'm thinking of!

Let's see people make those lame excuses when they're hanging in my living room Grin

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 05/12/2010 23:12

Yes, they are a bit 'nobbly', I was thinking maybe flattening them first between the pages of a heavy book kind of like flower pressing then they would fit nicely into most frames.

I've kept the curls from his 1st haircut in an envelope and put it in a special box alongside his stump, ID bracelet from the hospital and a few other bits and pieces from his birth. Is this creepy or just sentimental? I'm not sure what his reaction is likely to be when I present to him his special box to take with him when he leaves home.

My mum doesn't have any of our milk teeth. Or locks of hair from our first hair cut.

She has however kept the baby teeth from each of the two foals her horse brought into this world.

We know our place.

SalFresco · 05/12/2010 23:13

I think he'll be speechless Grin

SalFresco · 05/12/2010 23:14

Perhaps you could wait until he gets married and give them to your DIL? It would be a beautiful moment...

perfumeditsawonderfullife · 05/12/2010 23:15

PMSL at ClaireDeLoon

I kept ds's first curl, teeth, hospital id and so on. No idea what I will do with them, but just felt nice and sentimental. Wouldn't dream of giving it as a gift to grandparents though.

It's a bit like buying someone a photo frame and putting a picture of your choice in it! Slightly presumptious.

LoopyLoopsOfSparklyFairyLights · 05/12/2010 23:16

Frame some of your pubic hairs and give it to DP for xmas - see if he thinks that's creepy!

ShanahansRevenge · 05/12/2010 23:19

I might do a "Family Collection" Loopyloops!

"A little bit of all of us to keep us next to your heart"

LoopyLoopsOfSparklyFairyLights · 05/12/2010 23:21

To send to the in-laws?

TottWriter · 05/12/2010 23:23

Kept DS's first lock of hair, and first shoes. Not so sure about teeth, and his stump went really manky and stank, so it had to go (though I don't think it would ever have occured to me to keep it - we chucked DD's too).

I don't mind hair, as it's on his head, and it's now in a little loose change wallet (the ones they give out at bank Blush as it was the nearest thing to hand when we cut his hair and I remembered), but teeth... I don't know, I'll probably change my mind when his fall out Grin

As for lock of hair as a gift, well, maybe if you had a photo of your DS as the main feature with a little lock of hair in the corner. Would have to be done artfully though. I think the sort of frame where that would work (one big window one small, perhaps) would be pricey. And if you didn't do it tastefull it would look, as someone else said, a bit mawkish.

Maybe find out how fond they are of mementoes first, too.

SkylineDrifter · 05/12/2010 23:27

I never thought of that as being creepy. I gave a lock of my son's first haircut to my Mum, and when she died, I got her jewellery box and there in the bottom was the little envelope with the lock still in it, along with the photo that was in the local paper of his first day at school. Kinda weird thing to frame it mind.

LoopyLoopsOfSparklyFairyLights · 05/12/2010 23:27

First toenail clippings anyone? Threaded to make a lovely necklace?

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 05/12/2010 23:28

I don't think the lock of hair is weird in itself - it's just giving it as a gift is a bit, I think.
