I know the barking old bat is 89 but she has all her marbles! And it's not as if DD is a new baby. She's 11 FGS! Grin

My name is more common nowadays, than it was when I was born.

My dear grandfather passed away when I was 18, and from the day my mum told him my name to the day he died, he called me a completely different name saying 'There's no such name as x'. It wasn't even a different variation of spelling just completely different name!!!

pantomimecow · 04/12/2010 17:25

YABU you are spelling it wrong not her.My DD is Catherine and if we ever shorten its Katie/Kate WTF is Catey!!

nannynobblystockingnobs · 04/12/2010 17:28

My great gran always spelt my name with an -ie instead of a -y. However she had such beautiful copperplate handwriting that I looked forward to her cards and used to try and copy her handiwork!

pranma · 04/12/2010 18:13

My ds is called Guy-my m-i-l always called him Hugh!!She was very old[90] and said.'well its just the same really!!'

flingingflangin · 11/12/2010 22:27

Just jumping in very late to this. My DD name is isobel shortened to izzy. But a friend insists in saying Isy. It's not is it??

Firawla · 11/12/2010 22:35

my granny spells my ds name wrong too, i just got a bday card this morning with the wrong spelling which also indicates a wrong pronounciation but i wouldn't take it personally, its not an easy name and not one she is used to, and she has put the effort in to think of him and send a card, so why would i moan about it? i find the weird spellings a bit funny at times
my ds1 also got a cake made by my mil for his 1st bday with his name on but name totally spelt wrong! i actually thought it was the bakerys mistake but no, mil said "oh are you not spelling it like that??" wasn't offended by that either as she had gone to a lot of effort with the cake and it was an honest mistake she never thought to check the spelling as she just presumed she knew it (and we presumed she would have known the correct one so never thought to make sure she did - it was actually her fil's name too hence why we just thought she would know the spelling!)
but really op i think yabu, don't be so precious about the name spelling if people make a mistake, as long as its an honest mistake. if people spelt it wrong to make a point (something like they dont like the name and only want to spell it their own way or some crap like that) but otherwise just get over it and appreciate the gestures as they have been intended, in a positive way

nightmarebeforechristmas · 11/12/2010 22:37

yabu
mil is 85 and sometimes gets their names right lol
she loves them but the 3 boys, well their names are alike......

CheekyLittleStocking · 11/12/2010 22:40

My mum is 47 and her DAD still spells her name wrong - shes called Pam or Pamela to her Dad and sisters - but her last birthday card say

Pamaler

instead of Pamela

My grandma used to spell my sisters name as Jenniffer

instead of Jennifer

MarniesMummy · 11/12/2010 22:40

Maybe she's an undiagnosed dyslexic! in the 1920's they weren't so hot on dyslexia.Grin

midlandsmumof4 · 11/12/2010 22:47

YABU. Really......get over it. This is YOUR gran so your DD great nan. My kids wish they still had their GP's let alone GGP's. Its an unusual spelling and you are very disrespectful......

nightmarebeforechristmas · 11/12/2010 22:50

have to add
my dear mil(and she is lovely)was told the new name of her ggd so she rang me to tell me..
she then said she din't like the name
so I asked her what it was, so she said some weird name...
I asked her to spell it to me, it was a lovely name, she just couldn't get her little old head round how to say it.
be glad you have them, they won't be here much longer, then you will miss it.

thenightsky · 11/12/2010 22:53

Ach... she is 89... let her off.

OTOH.. one of my old relatives insists on calling my DS 'Clarence' when his name is Lawrence Grin

stillbobbysgirl · 11/12/2010 22:54

My name is Catherine and MY OWN FATHER writes my name as Cat. This is because he is Irish and doesn't really "do" TH's Smile

My cousing has had a baby Orla (Irish name obv) and 18 months later he still cannot either pronounce or spell it.

He is 76 and a bit mental so I don't really mind. Leave your poor Granny alone and get over it!

Nickiename · 11/12/2010 22:57

ha, I think your Gran is only trying to help. Catey is a stupid and wrong spelling.

ChippingIn · 11/12/2010 22:57

I knew your name was going to be Anne - my friends Mum is Ann, she's in her 70's - guess how all 7 of her brothers & sister still spell it??? Yep with an E... You CANNOT win Grin

midlandsmumof4 · 11/12/2010 23:01

'Barking old bat is 89'...you should be ashamed.Xmas Angry.

midlandsmumof4 · 11/12/2010 23:09

If you choose such an unusual spelling for such a common name then you should expect people to get it wrong.........
