I know the barking old bat is 89 but she has all her marbles! And it's not as if DD is a new baby. She's 11 FGS! Grin

Nice way to refer to your Gran.

JamieLeeCurtis · 03/12/2010 10:03

And it's Katie. You young cow (only joking)

JennyPiccolo · 03/12/2010 10:10

i have a great aunt who thinks my name is spelled with a P. It starts with an M.

Santassnowyoldclothcatpuss · 03/12/2010 19:32

On the contrary coralanne, I love her very much. Doesn't mean she isn't a barking old bat though. This was just a bit of light heartedness really. She Is a brick and loves her great grandkids.
She is doing well for 89 but has always had a reputation for being slightly mad! My great uncle on my dads side thinks she is hysterical. Once many years ago, they had a conversation about onions. She said she hated it when they made her cry. He asked if it would help if she peeled them under water. To which gran replied that she couldn't hold her breath for that long! This story has gone down in family history as a classic! Grin

See now I don't understand how a Catherine can be a Kate, surely a Cate? So it follows that Catherine should be Caty, Catie or Catey I guess.

My uncle used to call me Betty in cards. I have no idea why, name is Sarah. Just smile and nod Smile

purplefeet · 03/12/2010 19:41

This has made me laugh. Lots of relatives and even friends always add an e to the end of my name. Often when I'm spelling it to someone who's writing it down, they put an e at the end!

ds is called James. Someone asked me how it was spelt yesterday. I called him that as I didn't think it could be spelt any other way.

SeaTrek · 03/12/2010 19:47

Maybe she has spent the 11 yrs trying to gently correct your spelling mistake Wink

Ok, that is pretty bad that she hasn't noticed in all this time.

I guess your daughter is going to have a lifetime of it.

MIL is called Gillian but spells the shortened version Jill. I spell it Gill because my mum is called Jillian so she is Jill! I bet MIL hates that Grin.

Santassnowyoldclothcatpuss · 03/12/2010 20:25

So how do we explain her spending 23 years leaving the E off of the end of Anne then? Grin

My grandad could never spell my sisters name correctly. Correct spelling 'Kirsty' and he came up with a variety of spellings such as Kirstie, Kristie and the one that got us all laughing most was 'Krusty!!!!'

BelligerentGhoul · 03/12/2010 21:30

I know one Catey but still think it's quite an odd way to spell it.

Then again, dp's dad still can't spell dd2's name - and she is 13! Her name is Isobel.

And well done for being so pleasant about everybody telling you that you can't spell, OP! :)

KERALA1 · 03/12/2010 21:39

My lovely Granny insisted on calling Princess Diana Princess Diane. Used to find that quite funny as a teenager as somehow the two names are pretty different...

darleneconnor · 03/12/2010 22:54

Catey is a tad pretentious unusual, though is it not?

Ann/Anne could be either. My Mum once said that English people weren't spelling it correctly when they added the e.

A relative once told us off for not guessing the spelling of his DD's name correctly, apparently it's meant to be 'Aerran' Hmm

As for James, i've seen it with a y in the middle!

MollieO · 03/12/2010 22:57

YABU. It is perfectly normal behaviour for older people. Ds's grandma (my mum) regularly refers to him by her (female) dog's name. Xmas Hmm

pinkstarlight · 04/12/2010 00:27

my childrens gran has always spelt the kids and my name wrong, its always amused me.would be a waste of time getting upset over it.

MerrilyDefective · 04/12/2010 00:43

GET OVER IT.
IT DOESN'T FUCKING MATTER.
SHE'S 89 FGS

lilyliz · 04/12/2010 10:28

grow up and have a bit of compassion, she is 89 and it is a stranga way to spell such a common name.I mean as in use a lot not in a chavy way.

spongebunnyfatpants · 04/12/2010 10:42

My Nanna went on holiday and brought me back a pen with a name on it.
Only it wasn't my name. Confused
When I asked her why I had a pen with Eileen on it when my name's Helen, she said it was the closest she could get. Grin

Mrsmackie · 04/12/2010 10:46

Catey is a bit of a strange spelling though isn't it - not one I've seen before!

santasbluebaubles · 04/12/2010 10:47

My DH's grandmother spells his name wrong and he's almost 30. It's not an unusual name at all, and she gets 2 of the letters the wrong way around. It can't be an age thing because she's done it since he was born, at which point she was only early 50s!

mumeeee · 04/12/2010 12:26

Yabu. It is an unusual spelling for the name, MIL spelt DD2's name wrong for years and it didn't bother me or her,

DMCWelshCakes · 04/12/2010 15:18

DH's grandmother has never managed to get my name right once in the 12 years I've been with DH (or the 5 years prior to that when we were friends). Can't pronounce it, spell it or these days, reliably remember it.

It only has one syllable. It's really not hard.

She's just 85 now so her lack of attention to detail must have started when she was only 68...

Ephiny · 04/12/2010 16:11

I wouldn't blame people for assuming Katie/Katy instead of Catey, and your gran probably doesn't see it written down very often/ever.

I know it's a bit annoying when people get your name wrong, but it could have been easily predicted with this particular choice.

Catherine with a C often gets shortened to Cath(y) or Cat, never heard anyone use Catey!

Ephiny · 04/12/2010 16:13

And Kate Middleton is a Catherine with a C, isn't she, I thought I read that she would be Princess Catherine officially? I don't think it's that unusual.

Lonnie · 04/12/2010 16:15

at 89 I think she is excused my MOTHER (65) cant spell my 3 dd's names and occationally spells my ds name with a K not a C my oldest dd is almost 13

youremindmeofthebaubles · 04/12/2010 16:16

My grand, mother has always spelt my mother's name wrong. She got it right fr the birt cert, and since then has spelt it incorrectly twice a year!Xmas Grin
