I know the barking old bat is 89 but she has all her marbles! And it's not as if DD is a new baby. She's 11 FGS! Grin

When I'm 89, I doubt very much if I'll be sending any fecker a Christmas card, marbles or no marbles.

The only thing to consider is whether she still remembers to slip a fiver between the folds.

Santassnowyoldclothcatpuss · 02/12/2010 21:49

Funnily enough, we have very little mis spelling of her name. Blame FIL he said Caty with no e was pronounced Catty! I should have just told him to bugger off. as she is called Catherine, she has plenty of scope to change to something else when she grows up.
I'm called Anne! That's hardly unusual and she can't spell that right either! Grin

Unhelpful but I know plenty of Catherines who are Kate or Katie...

I don't know any Cateys

I do know a Caiti (but that is Caitlin)

My aunt and uncle NEVER spelt my name right. Every year - birthday and Christmas - always missed a vowel out or transposed the vowels. I have a v common 1970s name (v common as middle name; also v popular as first name) with - admittedy - a lot of vowels. But nonetheless - they never got it right.

Santassnowyoldclothcatpuss · 02/12/2010 21:51

She is a fifth generation Catherine. All spelled the same way!

FellatioNelson · 02/12/2010 21:52

One of my sons is called Rory and we got a christmas card from DH's auntie and uncle saying 'to Fellatio, MrF and Roy!'

ovumahead · 02/12/2010 21:52

She's 89. You should be grateful she is still alive, and able to write.

KnittingisbetterthanTherapy · 02/12/2010 21:53

Lol! Never seen it spelt like that either so can totally understand her spelling it wrong too! Grin

Jojay · 02/12/2010 21:53

Kate Middleton's full name is Catherine, I believe.....

But YANBU. I have an aunt who always spells DS1's name wrong. His name is Jasper but she always puts Jaspar Xmas Hmm

solo · 02/12/2010 21:58

My Mum always spells her eldest Grandchilds name as SamuAl Hmm mind you, she says his name the way she spells it. I get niggled because she says my Ds's name as Joshuer, but at least she spells it right!

Bite your tongue and let her off OP, just be glad she's around to spell it wrong.

emptyshell · 02/12/2010 22:02

I've got the much less-common spelling variant of my name - relatives regularly get it wrong.. just one of those things.

MrsJessRabinovitch · 02/12/2010 22:04

thisisyoursong me too!!!! Does my head in Grin Am a pedantic sod at the best of times & feel like underlining the second a for thickos serial offenders Wink

Op-my 89 yr old gran just doesn't bother with the cards anymore she feels this close to 90 she can do away with niceties & I love her for that she's fab Xmas Wink

PhishFoodAddiction · 02/12/2010 22:07

OP has she always spelt your DDs name wrong? I don't think YABU for wanting it spelt correctly, but I would forgive her given her age.

My name is so easy to spell but I have a relative who insists on making it into a double barrelled name spelt completely wrong! Even though I always send them a card every year with my name written in really big writing at the bottom.

MIL only ever writes part of DD1s name and this irritates me.. DD's name is x-y, and we always usually call her x but I like the full x-y written in her cards etc. [I am probably being unreasonable emoticon].

TarheelMama · 02/12/2010 23:08

My grandmother made me a birthday cake every year for my birthday party, until I was about 11. Every year she misspelled my name in icing! It became a family joke. I was actually disappointed the last year when she spelled my name correctly Xmas Grin

MumNWLondon · 02/12/2010 23:15

She's 89, its ok for her to get it wrong as you have chosen an unusual spelling. If you asked me to spell would guess Katie, or Katy.

We called my son after DH's GF, but used the more "normal" spelling so of course DH's GM always spelled it her way, no problem.

nattiecake · 02/12/2010 23:23

At leasy shes spelling an actual word, my nan spells my DS's name OSKA. wtf?!

shes clearly the one trying out the popularity for spelling things differently!! :)

disappearhere · 02/12/2010 23:30

Considering you've spelt it incorrectly, I don't think you have anything to complain about. Having the audacity to criticize an old lady who can spell is just Hmm

seeker · 02/12/2010 23:31

It'll help her get used to it. That''s what happens when you choose a bonkers spelling of a "normal" name!

HelenaRose · 02/12/2010 23:42

I always know something's from my Nan when it says "From [stepdad]'s Mum"; as if I wouldn't know her name! I've spent Christmas with her many times...

She spells my name wrong, but I don't mind because - y'know - she loves me. And I'm grateful she's alive and well in her mid-eighties.

My Gran was 89 when she died this time last year. Dd was 3 at the time. My gran would always say "what are you calling her then?" each time we saw her ( about once a month). She just didn't like the name! (Dd 2, just born is named after her).

Santassnowyoldclothcatpuss · 03/12/2010 00:07

What a giggle this thread has been! Nothing like a good mumsnet flaming to cheer you up! I should obviously not complain. She is still going, does love us all and yes, she can spell! She can be forgiven for not spelling dds name correctly, it is an unusual spelling. (Not sure how a name which has been used for five generations and spelled the same for the past hundred years or so can be wrong, but there you go!) I bow to the opinion of mumsnet! Grin

ThisIsYourSong · 03/12/2010 02:55

I don't think you've been flamed Smile well apart from a couple of tongue in cheek comments! You just have our empathy - in a resigned kind of way.

The problem for me, is that someone has been kind enough to remember my DCs' birthday / at Christmas or whatever - and it seems a bit churlish to then complain about them spelling the name wrong!

MrsJessRabinovitch - one day I was saying to friends about how everyone in the family gets it wrong, and someone had the cheek to ask why we spelt it that way then - because its the proper spelling!!! (or so I think Hmm)

Coralanne · 03/12/2010 04:17

Sorry, but I don't think you like your gran very much.

I kind of understand how you feel though.

My DGD will turn 3 this month and she was about 2 before my 89 year old mum started calling her Amelia instead of Amanda.

I used to get a bit irritated and I once said to her Mum, How hard is it to remember Amelia?" I felt devestated afterwards because I felt as though I had kicked a dog or something.

My DD loves her MaMa to death and was a bit huffy with me because I kept picking DM up on it. DD said "It doesn't matter mum, she loves her and that's all that matters"

MrsSchadenfreude · 03/12/2010 06:38

My Gran used to call me Sandra. My name's not Sandra, it's not even close!! Doesn't even begin with "S"!

tummytickler · 03/12/2010 07:35

My Gran does not even know what all of my dc are called! Forgets constantly, especially the boys. One of my Grans remembers dd1's name, but only because she Grans middle name Grin.
My other Gran also forgets constantly.
I do not really mind, as they are old, and they have loads of Great Granchildren.
At least your Gran knows what your dd's name is!
