To be really pissed off that other people correct or comment on my spelling even when i have told them before hand that i'm dyslexic?

That i'm not thick but i can't spell as i'm dyslexic.

These people make me so as i end up feeling stupid even tho i know i'm not and really its the other people that are stupid for not knowing or undrestanding what dyslexia means?

YANBU. Even if you were not dyslexic or you were thick, correcting / commenting on spelling is bad maners.

YANBU, people only do it when they'tr losing the arguement.

perhaps they think they're helping. Because if they tell you how to spell a word you'll magically be able to do it from then on.

Agree with Jumpty. I think it's pretty rude to correct someone's spelling or grammar (unless in an educational or secretarial context). Even if they're not dyslexic.

But I think it's usually quite clear if someone is doing it to be rude. I picked someone up for writing 'inclapable' instead of 'incapable' on a thread about whether students misspelling their protest posters is proof they're stupid. I stand by that one.

Mostly it just seems strange though - it's not as if you're suddenly going to have a lightbulb moment and never spell the word wrong again, is it?!

YANBU but I must confess that I recently gently teased a poster who posted about the fact that "hoods block your profiterole vision", sorry.

I knew she meant peripheral but the mental image conjured up of a hood that blocks sight of chocolate covered pastries was too good to let go :)

Mind you, malapromisms are different from misspelling.

I have to admit I get annoyed when (in real life) people correct my pronunciation when they know I'm foreign.

Generally I'll adjust my pronunciation of certain words to the "norm" anyway, but in England that depends on where you are sometimes, (North/South etc) and if Northerners/Southerners can pronounce it a certain way that suits them depending on where they are from I dont see why I can't - within reason...

YANBU Its really bloody rude. If the content of the post can be understood what does it matter if things are spelt correctly. Yes there are times when it is important - my DH is dyslexic and I often check stuff for him for work but this is a site for people to connect with others in similar situations not to be graded on spelling and punctuation.

I am a dreadful pedant and I do think correct spelling is very important. However, I try to keep it in my head and not post for the sake of smug correction as a)Sod's law states that would be the time of the typo, b)it is rather nasty, and c) while I am not dyslexic, I am dyspraxic and I understand the frustration that comes with people not being able to understand why you can't just do the thing that they find so easy.

I think if you inform people that you are dyslexic and they still pull you up, that is actually borderline malicious.

I want to KILL when I see posters on here correct others spelling (for all they know, the other poster could be dyslexic). I think it is extraordinarily ignorant of them.

I have never corrected anyone's spelling or grammar because I don't find it necessary to my understanding of the post. On the rare occasion that a post is totally unintelligible there are more polite ways to ask for clarification.

Someone once pointed out somewhere (may have been another forum) that this a is leisure activity and as such they are relaxed when they post.

YANBU it is very rude as generally whether the poster being corrected is dsylexic or not. It's a chat forum and I don't see any problem with typos, spelling mistakes etc and I don't see why some people think that you should have perfect spelling and grammar in order to contribute.

Although I do love to have a giggle when someone gets on their highhorse and decides to do some spelling/ grammar policing only to have loads of typos in their own post

Do people really correct each other's spelling and grammar?? I've never seen it done other than in jest when someone makes a funny mistake. I can see why it would totally piss you off if someone did it as a way of belittling your post or something. I honestly don't see the point in it.

The way I feel about it is that on forums like these there are always a few posters who won't engage properly in an argument, will always resort to name-calling, and will always attack posters personally. I find if you just ignore these posters it's quite possible to have an enlightening, interesting debate about even the most controversial of issues. BUT if you engage with these posters even once you can be sure the thread will slowly go down the pan.

I know it must be hard, but my advice would be that if someone does comment on your spelling or grammar completely ignore it and all of that poster's comments from then on. You'll probably find the poster makes a complete tit of themselves trying to get your attention over and over again. It's quite amusing really :)

I posted in pedants corner about a shop sign I saw with a stray apostrophe, but added an "it's" to my post - I took the replies on the chin though and never again will I dare post there.
