To wish people would stop bloody moaning about a bit of snow

Seriously in London we get like 2 inches and everyones moaning, the news is full of exclamation marks in triangles and moaning about how are people going to get to work and talking to moaning idiots in the streets complaining that it's cold, (people wearing skinny jeans, fashion boots and normal winter jackets, idiots!).

Anyway too much moaning, too many idiots looking for any excuse to close schools and stay home, too many people who want to moan about it being too cold to go out instead of investing in some proper winter gear and letting some air out the tyres.

And why do we still put up with this countries reliance on out dated third rail systems that grind to a halt at the slightest thing, no one else in the world is still using that 80 odd year old system, they realised it was crap, so why are we still using it?.

I can't help but wonder why year after year we are like this, countries are laughing at us, nation full of lazy moaners.

I have snow socks, but they are pesky as you keep having to take them off/put them back on, I am getting winter tyres fitted this weekend. We have had a foot of snow for nearly a week now, I haven't missed a day of work, DTs have made it to school every day (albeit to find it closed!). We don't cope because we're not geared up for it - scandinavian countries know it will snow for months on end, we don't. One simple way to deal with it would be to make winter tyres compulsory for everyone, buses, lorries, cars, from November to March

olderandwider · 02/12/2010 20:11

Cheering news from Belgium - apparently that country has also ground to a halt under the snow. So, it's not just hopeless old Britain. Yay!

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 02/12/2010 20:12

pixel we've not tried them yet - we've been walking everywhere. will let you know how they are.

agedknees, I bet it was really manic :(

BonniePrinceBilly · 02/12/2010 20:12

and Ireland too, we're totally fucked!

BaroqinAroundTheChristmasTree · 02/12/2010 21:18

psst MummyBerryJuice - I think Janos was being sarcastic Wink

Pixel · 02/12/2010 21:28

Snowykitten, that would be good, thanks.Smile

Duckyfuzz, I don't think I'll mind the taking off/putting on because we live in the south and I'd probably only need them for a couple of days a year, if that. I had to walk miles in the snow today to see to my horse just because I couldn't get the car off the hill where we live. If I could just get something to help with that I'd be ok the rest of the way there.

So, my friend in South Africa who can't get to Germany on her long planned holiday due to airport closures is also in on the conspiracy, Janos.

Ummmm.....I was joking, MBJ!

All sympathies to your friend (genuinely), that is an rotten situation to be in, very frustrating.

I'm having travel issues as well albeit on a much smaller scale. I think a lot of us are.

Janos · 02/12/2010 21:53

I get annoyed when I see all the ooh why does the country grind to a halt, not that bad, people being lazy stuff.

This weather is exceptionally bad. I don't remember a winter like it in living memory and neither does my mum (she's been around quite a bit longer than me, but I won't give her age or she'll give me what for Grin)

Pixel - I have found the snow socks great for getting off our estate and through the village, I would happily recommend them. I need them at either end of my journey to/from work, which is taking me longer than usual anyway, so adding in the on/off time is a bit annoying, but better than going nowhere!

BaroqinAroundTheChristmasTree · 02/12/2010 21:55

PMSL at you two Grin

misdee · 02/12/2010 21:56

what snow???

bumperella · 03/12/2010 10:51

I'm 5 months pregnant. The slippery pavements are my fault - it's the universe conspiring against me, again. Sorry 'bout that.

AlpinePony · 03/12/2010 11:03

Anyone in the South-East claiming they've 2' of snow needs to re-acquaint themselves with a tape-measure. Hmm

Janos · 03/12/2010 11:07

Alpinepony, Met office officially have 'greater than 50cm' recorded for some of the SE - which as you know is 20". Therefore people may well have 2ft of snow in their gardens.

Which if you do, then be aware that Sat/Sun brings a real flooding risk with models showing up to 40mm of rain in that region. Heavy rain+rapid thaw=flooding.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/12/2010 13:20

we have/had as not snowing and trying to melt/turn sludgy 12 inches of snow

my friend has 3 foot of snow = 18 inches

we are in south east

i also have milk - trudged to local shop again and finally got some for me and elderly neighbours :)
