I've never posted a fred about a fred before, but I'm burning with a sense of injustice. Hmm Grin

There's a thread that's really annoyed me, and I'm bringing it up here because I'm digressing from the OP completely (and noone's replying there Grin )

On this thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1094020-to-think-hubby-should-have-cut-short-his-bender/AllOnOnePage#22509239 (p5) a man posting a 'male perspetive' on a situation was called, by one poster, the following:

Stupid, lazy and selfish.
Childish.
Ignorant twat.
Cunt.
Selfish dick.
You really are quite thick, aren't you? DimGuy (a derogatory play on his username).
Gobshite.
Stupid, sexist, patronising, lazy and shite.
Utter fucking knobhead.

The (male) poster had been nothing but polite in his posts, and was trying to make a useful and respectful contribution to the thread.

Do something for me: imagine that a woman had posted a 'female perspective' on a male-dominated forum. All the other replies were from men, being supportive of the male OP. Our woman comes along and tries to describe how many but not all (he made that distinction) women might view this situation. The woman poster is called the names I listed above. I think that would strike many of you as being unreasonable and chauvinistic. AIBU?

booyhoo · 30/11/2010 21:44

no different from using the word dick is it?

BitOfFun · 30/11/2010 21:45

Honestly, he has a history on MN. A very anti-woman one. But I shan't slag him off further in his absence.

Hassledge · 30/11/2010 21:45

How do people know he's a knobbish troll, though? What's the source? This stuff fascinates me - how do some people just know this stuff? Is it by osmosis?

peeringintothevoid · 30/11/2010 21:47

booyhoo dick is a mild, sort of humorous insult, cunt is about the most taboo word we have in the English language (invites the derailment of this thread into an eyewateringly obscene comparison of insults). It's clear which concept is seen as the most offensive.

OP posts:
BitOfFun · 30/11/2010 21:47

It's all in the dossier.

usualsuspect · 30/11/2010 21:47

I always wondered that ? does a troll alarm go off on their laptops

BitOfFun · 30/11/2010 21:48

I think that we are managing to dilute 'cunt' quite effectively on MN.

And in Scotland it is a term of endearment. Ya cheeky wee cunt.

Truckulent · 30/11/2010 21:49

Niceguy isn't a troll he posts on lone parents regularly.
As far as I'm aware he's the parent with care is it this that gets peoples backs up?

peeringintothevoid · 30/11/2010 21:50

BOF does that make it ok to insult him like that when nothing he's posted in the current thread has said anything to deserve such opprobium?

OP posts:
Snorbs · 30/11/2010 21:50

I think what is notable is the level of vitriol directed at him was way in excess of that seen directed at even the most objectionable of female posters on here.

I don't recall anyone calling MN's favourite BNP-voting homophobic bigot a "cunt" for example.

Summerbird73 · 30/11/2010 21:50

hmm - i agree with OP here - just read the thread and i have more issues with the sweary vindictive woman than the guy (incidentally isnt the troller 'niceguy' and not 'niceguy2' )

the sweary woman is horrible!

BitOfFun · 30/11/2010 21:51

What does that prove? All sorts of people post to be provocative and shit stir. And if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...

Anyway, I am saying no more

spidookly · 30/11/2010 21:52

He came across as a total twat on that thread.

Are you still on about this peering?

Ffs

I'll be as rude to stupid morons as I please. The board has moderators. If they deem it "unacceptable" they'll silence me.

I can't believe how impressed you are by a man telling a woman that men deal with problems by ignoring them.

Although I'm very flattered to have a fan now.

BitOfFun · 30/11/2010 21:52

Snorbs, you must have been away that day Wink

LoudRowdyDuck · 30/11/2010 21:53

Don't know the poster and I'm not about to wade through the thread, but cunt is a nice term. It's an excellent insult, just as 'fucker' is.

I enjoy fucking, myself. Does this mean it ceases to be an insult? No? Then may I continue to use 'cunt' as an insult too? Good.

usualsuspect · 30/11/2010 21:53

This board has no officialmoderators

Summerbird73 · 30/11/2010 21:54

aaahh its the sweary woman

peeringintothevoid · 30/11/2010 21:55

But then, BOF if you consider someone's posts to be consistently provocative, can you be so sure that they are a troll, as opposed to you just vehemently disagreeing with them? I have no idea, btw - just an idea.

And even if you are fairly sure they are ofen deliberately provocative in their posts, does that still make it ok to pile into them with insults when they haven't said anything provocative?

OP posts:
Hassledge · 30/11/2010 21:57

He's always struck me as - well, a nice enough guy. Not that I have any discernment whatsoever, although I do have an uncanny ability to read a ton of dull threads and miss the interesting ones.

DuelingFanio · 30/11/2010 21:57

is it that we are getting him confused with that engineeringMike guy?

usualsuspect · 30/11/2010 21:59

engineeringMike guy? never heard of him Confused

ThisIsYourSong · 30/11/2010 21:59

I agree that there is no need for language like that, or to personally attack someone for offering their opinion. But I don't get why you're so vigorously defending him - you just said "he was respectful, articulate and thoughtful"

Umm, he said this:

"We might even tell you we understand so you don't garrote us in our sleep but we can never know."

and this:

"Lastly (and I admit this may be a prime example of being a nonunderstanding man), you are pregnant, not ill. Both arms have not dropped off and you should still be able to function. Why should a man have to revolve his life around a woman because she is pregnant? Why should HE have to do ALL the housework? Why should he have to drop everything at the drop of a hat? The world still turns does it not?"

Considering this is called Mumsnet, you are going to get quite a few people who have been pregnant on here, so its fair to say that many people will find those things fairly offensive and condescending. I certainly do!

BitOfFun · 30/11/2010 22:00

I am making no comment on that individual, but I think I can tell the difference between someone I happen to disagree with, and someone who is pursuing a particular agenda, especially a sexist one, on a board heavily populated by some vulnerable female posters who have had their threads seeking support consistently derailed in quite a damaging way.

peeringintothevoid · 30/11/2010 22:00

LoudRowdyDuck That's actually a very good point. Grin

spidookly I'm failing to see how you've got the impression that I'm a fan of yours. With that depth of perceptiveness, it become less surprising that you come to the rabid conclusions you seem to draw.

I wasn't especially impressed with the guy's posts - I thought they seemed well thought out and relevant, as I do many (female) posters'. It was your poison that drew my attention.
