to be a bit surprised at how many people look like they've forgotten their skirt these days?

This thing where people wear leggings, but leggings that really look like tights - and not very long jumpers over the top.

DH is freaked out by it and specifically asked if I had read anything on Mumsnet about it (!) Has anyone else noticed this?? Or is it just where we live that girls are basically walking around with their a*ses hanging out? And in this cold weather too! [old biddy emoticon]

Just put 'how not to wear leggings' into google images... there are some right old shockers on there.

JennyRobyn · 01/12/2010 17:43

saw a woman the other week and happened to notice her tights (have the same ones) only she was wearing them with a shell suit jacket that stopped at the waste and boots.

I was a bit Shock and turned to my mum and said she's forgotten her skirt!!

But the worst thing was they are grey with tiny black polka dots and the pattern stops above the knee where it is supposed to meet the hem line. So obvious that they were tights (not to mention the seams)

I didn't realise that this was the in look!!

Maybe i'm past it Grin

thenightsky · 01/12/2010 17:47

I wonder if people actually look in the mirror before they leave the house sometimes. Am no style queen myself, but hell I know if I'm missing a whole section of clothing!

Kaloki · 01/12/2010 17:56

Surely the breeze would be a giveaway too?

alemci · 01/12/2010 18:11

the post about wearing no knickers freaked me out. That would be my worse nightmare forgetting to put any on.

I think leggings are ok as long as ones bottom is covered by a long top or jumper.

Shodan · 01/12/2010 18:13

Back in the dark ages, when I was in my 20s and leggings were in for the first time, I worked in an office with a girl who wore leggings and a waist length t-shirt.

Not so bad, you'd think. Except that she was a bit on the large side, wore her leggings until the seams went white where the Lycra gave way, and had a habit of bending over desks, making it blatantly obvious that she wore no knickers under her leggings.

ProfYaffle · 01/12/2010 18:21

I only commented on this phenomenon to dh the other day. I hope everyone who wore tights and shorts in the 80's wore DMs too Grin

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 01/12/2010 18:24

Oh Lordy, I see this all the time.

My eyes are strangely drawn to the offenders arse aswell, no matter how saggy and baggy it isBlush

People need telling that leggings are not trousers, you need to cover your bits!

elvislives · 01/12/2010 18:47

I saw one this week in short top and black tights. Didn't realise it was a new craze.

GraceAwayInAManger · 01/12/2010 19:02

Considering I wore this look, in various forms, through the 70s, 80s and 90s, my opinions are limited to "Yes, it does freeze your legs" and "Best avoided if your thighs wobble when you run".

I've just sent a dress back to Asos, though, because it was stupidly short. Then I had a look at the other dresses and they're all the same length :(

I will have to start shopping from those catalogues where everything is "elasticated for comfort".

GraceAwayInAManger · 01/12/2010 19:04

Shodan, you just put me off my dinner!

theresapotatoundermysink · 01/12/2010 19:17

I used to be one of those girls who thought the barelegs/minidress/highheels combo was the height of sophistication.

Christian Aid once gave me one of those silver foil blankets when I was waiting for a bus at 4 in the morning. Blush

GraceAwayInAManger · 01/12/2010 19:24

Christian Aid once gave me one of those silver foil blankets when I was waiting for a bus That's hilarious!
Xmas Grin

Muser · 01/12/2010 19:48

cold? It's not cold!

Sidge · 01/12/2010 19:49

I firmly believe about 99.7% of the adult population Should Not Wear Leggings, unless wearing a long tunic or jumper dress.

I saw a woman the other day wearing thin, cheap leggings that were so flimsy you could see every bump and ripple of her cellulite. Now most of us have cellulite on our backsides, but wouldn't dream of exposing it to strangers for fear of someone trying to play solitaire on our arses.

And as for girls with no clothes on in this weather - honey, being mottled blue is Not A Good Look.

starkadder · 01/12/2010 19:58

haha! i am delighted that so many people have joined me on the Old Biddy Bench! I am herewith officially turning into an entire Old Biddy section of the park.

DH says - has anyone seen any articles/columns recommending this fashionable look? i.e. is it officially something we are supposed to do on purpose?

Porcelain · 01/12/2010 20:06

Nope I do not need to see their arseflesh through the painfully thin fabric, I don't care how young, slim or pretty they are, bottoms are not for public viewing.

Another mum at a playgroup I was at last week was sporting this look and bent over right in front of me as I sat on the floor with DS, I really didn't need that.

frgr · 01/12/2010 20:08

JennyRobyn your post made me laugh, that's really bad! Shock

BarefootBaritone · 02/12/2010 16:42

I have made a solemn vow never to wear leggings - i have looked in a mirror and winced - i am quite simply the wrong shape! I'm happy to admit this and wouldn't dream of inflicting my cellulite and wobbly bum on the rest of the world - it does seem i'm in the minority though Xmas Hmm

Mind you I'm also the person who takes a coat out in the middle of summer "in case it gets colder later" - am not bothered by this either

My best friend swears i was born aged 47..... Xmas Biscuit

minipie · 02/12/2010 16:47

Yes I was Shock by this look too.

Then I realised I'm just jealous of their slim legs Sad

Ormirian · 02/12/2010 16:49

Don't know.

Dh goes out without his skirt all the time! Slut.

masochismTangoer · 02/12/2010 17:01

Thank goodness I saw this thread - I was worried I had turned into my mother.

3 of the other mothers - my age early(ish) 30s and older - were wearing this look today in the snow at midday - one with no coat. None of them looked good - and they varied in shape considerably. It looked very odd with their DC in huge coats, gloves, hats ect.

BarefootBaritone · 02/12/2010 17:06

I suppose wearing it yourself could be one way of stopping your DDs wearing it - after all, the mere thought of dressing like your MUM Blush

I shall keep that in the back of my mind for when my DD is older..... Grin

MrManager · 02/12/2010 23:56

duchesse "I'm sure there must be quite a lot more we can pin on Pixie Lott? Apart from extra clothes I mean."

Phwoar, I'd put my pin in Pixie Lott... wait, that sounds... disappointing.

Merlotmonster · 03/12/2010 00:14
