To send my dc in for the nativity when ill in night?

My ds was sick in the night, this is the 3rd time he's been sick in his whole life. I believe it was due to some chicken he ate last night.

This afternoon is his nativity play, that like so many other children around the country he's spent hours practising and is so excited about.

Would I be being totally unreasonable if I kept him home this morning, and sent him along just for the play?

Of course if he was sick again this morning, I would keep him at home.

You know damn well that you would be unreasonable! You'll do it anyway though I suspect.

Sorry I think YABU. There will be lots of people there with little babies etc and you dont know who else, you dont know it was teh chicken and could pass something on.

24 hour rule, he shouldn't go.

I think in most places its actually a 48 hour rule and yes you would be unreasonable to send him in.

Think of other kids. Chances are, if it was last night's chicken he would be much iller than just one vomit. Unless he ate too much of it vs. it being off etc.

Consider him standing on stage and puking all over the virgin mary......?

There are lots of vomiting bugs around at the moment.

Its a shame for you and your DS of course but unfortunately just one of those things.

48 hour rule here. I think the school would be very surprised to see him if you told them he was sick overnight and then brought him in in the afternoon. And pretty cross TBH.

Well the clue is generally in the school's wording where they state 48hrs after any sickness or diarrhoea. What does your school say? Can't think why you needed to ask here.

I honestly didn't know there was any rules. I will have to find out what our school's rules are.
If I was aware that there were rules in place, I wouldn't of needed to ask the question.

I've just been through the policies that are on the school's intranet. Nothing regarding, sick/sickness/illness/vomiting. I'll have to wait for the school office to open, and enquire. As I now need to know how long he'll be off for. As it appears it could be thursday at the earliest then.

Don't be silly. Of course you don't have to stay away from work unless you've got no other childcare. If you're ill yourself then yes it's good practice to stay away for at least 24hrs after your last episode. D&V is extremely infectious and it's callous not to consider the impact you/your child (general 'you') might have on others.

You should have received a pack when your child started school containing all their various policies - schools are usually very hot on making sure parents know about illness exclusion rules. I struggle to understand how you weren't aware of it tbh. Everybody knows that surely?

my work is medical and it is standard practise there

To be honest, it may well have been in either work/school pack, but honestly it's never been a consideration before. And my dc have been in nursery since 3 months, but I'm very lucky that touch wood, they just do not get ill. Even during the night, I was thinking what do you do when somebody is sick, give water/not give water etc.

If it's something you don't experience, then you just don't become aware of these things until they impact you.

I don't feel so stupid now, I've called the school, and I asked courtesy of you guys how long I needed to stay away, and they couldn't answer straight away and had to go and find out.

Seems my school isn't so hot on such things - cynic in me says maybe where my son got it from - not the chicken.

dont send in!!!!! My dd has missed her nativity in nursery as she was sick once in the morning nothing else but kept her off just incase, and last year too as she had chicken pox. So this year will, fingers crossed be her first nativity and she is yr1!
