To try and start a campaign to stop the uk release of 'A Serbian film'

I'm not suggesting anyone read the synopsis as that's disgusting enough. But I don't know how the government can allow this disgusting film to be released!

Surely this sort of film encourages paedophillia and violent rape.

There are more slaves alive now than there has been before at any time in the history of the world. The majority of this is sex trafficking.

I'm revolted that a film like this can be given even a censored release date (10th)

Ignore it and it will go away. I too read the synopsis on Wikipedia and it seemed like a sick comedy - frustrated, repressed, politically demasculated 'artists' getting together to vent. It doesn't require much imagination to use rape to shock, which is basically what they've done.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Salo yet - Amy thoughts on that? Do the two compare?

any thoughts

You know believe it or not dittany I find discussing this kind of thing very difficult and upsetting. you chose your words very carefully in what you included in the description, and your aim was to cheapen my character. And as I had said I would not go and see it because of the content, what you said was even more upsetting. After I expressed my upset you just got more intimidating to the point where I felt I wanted to leave MN. The most stupid thing about it is that we are both on the same side, and you should be reserving your vitriol for the men in the film industry with whom I've had much experience who objectifiy women habitually. You do shout people down. I have seen it many times. sometimes I admire your tenacity and sometimes, well sometimes, you are just too unpleasant.

'Dittany, this film is supposed to be [apparently] a metaphor for the depravity that the Serbian people stooped to and were forced to stoop to, and a metaphor for the terrible crimes and bloodshed in the Balkans during the wars. The acts that are referred to in the film are directly related to what actually happened during the wars.

That said, I have not seen the film, and I do not want to. I cannot therefore commit to an opinion on whether this film is just sick and cynical for sick and cynical's sake or if it actually does make a valid point. It sounds absolutely sickening I agree. But also agree with StayFrosty that Hollywood does this kind of stuff, though maybe with more suggestion than enactment, all the time with less reaction.'

My first post on the this thread. It does not take issue with you at all. It is a reasonable response as part of a debate. It was not about you until you started being personal.

I really wish I hadn't joined this thread at all. i didn't sleep last night after reading the synopsis.

grapeandlemon · 28/11/2010 20:17

abfab I think the comparison to Salo is a very interesting one - similar themes. What I will say about Pasolini's artistic intention is that I think he was coming from a very different intellectual perspective from the jokers who made "A Serbian Film", after reading dittany's link where the writers and directors explain the reasoning behind the use of such debased, repulsive imagery. Salo is truly self-reflexive where ASF seems just shock tactics for it's own sake. Just because they can it would seen.

I found Salo heartbreaking. I am not sure where I stand on it, as I am still not over it completely.

musicmadness · 28/11/2010 20:24

FGS! It is a film, a very sick one judging by the synopsis but giving it free advertising like this will make more people want to see it. If it got banned in this country it would probably be on the news which would make everyone look it up to see what was so bad about it! Every time a film gets banned it is all anyone talks about for the next couple of days and by the end of it everyone knows all about it. The best way to get everyone to ignore it is to just not mention it, I can't imagine many cinemas will want to show it anyway.
For what its worth I don't think it should be banned, restricted certainly but I don't believe in banning any film, whatever the content as long as no one was really hurt or abused in filming it. I'm not going to watch it, I seriously doubt many people will, but that doesn't mean that the choice should be removed for adults.

southeastastra · 28/11/2010 20:26

read synopsis and it's sounds dire, not worth this amount of debate imo

should be ignored quitely, though these sort of films have been made for years already.

(sorry haven't read all thread so ignore me)

Toddlerwrangler, I had read some of the synopsis and had stopped fairly quickly when I realised how bad it was. The detail about the baby in your post just made me cry (didn't help that I was bf ds at the time). I don't think the film should be banned, I think that it should be destroyed, and the filmmaker removed from the genepool (can I borrow your steamroller Dittany?)

toddlerwrangler · 28/11/2010 21:00

LostInTransmogrification - I am so sorry, the thread got so long O forgot how much had and had not been said about the main distressing scene. Please accept my apologies - I am still new here so will see if I can figure out how to edit my post...

LostInTransmogrification · 28/11/2010 21:24

It's my own fault for ignoring the voice in my head telling me to leave the thread Sad. Leaving now.

nancydrewrockinaroundxmastree · 28/11/2010 21:33

It sounds like a truely grim film.

But do I think it should be banned no? Let people self censor and this film drop away into obscurity.

mumoflittlemouse · 28/11/2010 22:12

Good God, I feel sick at having dipped in to this thread for a quick, first page / last page gander as I had never heard of this film and was curious.

Not a clue. Now about to go to bed and don't feel like I will sleep after reading such a terrible detail described by TW :-(

Words fails me, why oh why would anyone want to make such a film??

Ugh. Shall be hiding this thread and steering clear of any thread that I am not sure what it's on about in future.

This hasn't helped my post-natal anxiety exasserbated by sleep deprivation, one little bit.

Thanks a bunch :-( try censoring yourselves (or a warning in the thread title? )
Flame away, I won't be here to see it

:-(

Thanks BeerTrickspotter - I have officially reported myself :) I did post in innocence as I think that everything I have said has already been cvered in the thread (well, I know it has) but I remember how upset I was when I read what heppened so would really hate to make anyone else feel that way if they have just skipped to the end of the thred and read my post.

Shock

Really I am so shocked that a film like this gets a standard "18" classification.

Is that actually how it works.

Basically you can have anything in a film and it gets a classification.

What are the XXX classifications etc?

Re all the deleted posts on this thread - not sure obviously what was deleted but I will add my 2p:

pofakked - I hate to see people say that they feel they need to deregister and as dittany knows in the past I have been a bit bruised by her posting style Grin

but IMO you have to draw a line somewhere and I feel that there is enough into about this film for us as women/as MNers to say
that this is fucking disgraceful.

No need to see the film, really.

I actually find this comment:

"I have said many times it may be an absolutely abhorrent film. I do not know. Because I have not seen it. And do not want to judging from the content." very upsetting.

Of couse it is absolutely abhorrent. Hmm

You say that there aren't people who agree with dittany they have all run away from the thread - well actually it is hard to jump into a thread like this and get involved now knowing what all the deleted posts say etc!

I realise that there is a liberty argument which goes against censorship etc but really as women let's stand up and lobby for this to be banned/classification upgraded.

This is so far over the line that we don't need to debate where the line is surely?

I don't hold with the argument that this "gives it more publicity".

Surely if people are sick enough to want to see it they will find out about it.

What sort of cinemas are going to show it?

People need to know what the British Board of Film Classification finds acceptable as a standard 18. Sad

OP are you still around - any ideas for a lobbying etc?
