AIBU in thinking this was uncalled for?

ok so yesterday i had the most embarassing day of my life ever. Rushing through primark to get to boots to get some nappies for dd.dd and ds in the double buggy.

i get half way through the doors out of primark and am aproached by a security guard. to my embarassment ds, age 2,had grabbed a pair of mens boxers Blush and i hadnt realised.

i explained to the security man that i had no idea he had them and offered to pay for any damages caused. he then went on to say he would have to call the police as shoplifting is an offence Blush.

i still cant quite beleive it. i was arrested for shop lifting :(

AIBU in thinking this is over the top? if they had had checked the cctv they would have seen that i had no idea ds had the pants!

OP posts:

found 2 tops from primark under the buggy once when I got home. they were my size as well! - would definately have been done.

LittleYellowTeapot · 26/11/2010 17:32

How awful for you OP. This has happened to me before. DD took a small pink pair of booties (in her size!) from Woolies. The staff laughed when I returned them.

I agree, don't accept a caution, you've done nothing wrong. Hope things are resolved soon.

BelleMama · 26/11/2010 17:33

Poor you. Sounds horrendous. YANBU - you've had lots of good advice here. I hope you get it resolved quickly.

PinkElephantsOnParade · 26/11/2010 17:48

Thwop - so you think Op should kust suck it up and forget it then?

Perhaps that attitude explains why the police get away with it.

mustdash · 26/11/2010 17:54

That sounds absolutely horrible. What a waste of time, and terrible for you.

DD1 once filled the bottom of the buggy with packs of cakes, and half a dozen eggs, and judging by the number of similar stories above, it sounds really normal, so there is no way they should be prosecuting you.

Another reason not to shop in Primark.

charmum3 · 26/11/2010 18:01

YANBU but they certainly are, i would complain to head office, get in touch with the local press, and complain to the company that provides the security cover for the store, idiotic doesn't begin to cover it

penguin73 · 26/11/2010 18:09

CCTV will only be useful if it shows the child putting it in the pram - maybe it was checked and doesn't? We don't have enough information to know whether this was the case or not.

SauvignonBlanche · 26/11/2010 18:18

How awful! Shock

TandB · 26/11/2010 18:43

Another criminal defence solicitor here. Happy to give the OP an overview of the procedure etc if she comes back to explain what actually happened at the police station.

Summerbird73 · 26/11/2010 20:49

hello?? Hmm

juneybean · 26/11/2010 21:40

Is it me you're looking for?

juneybean · 26/11/2010 21:40
A1980 · 26/11/2010 21:47

Armani are you going to be charged?

Don't accept a caution as every one else has said, go all the way to court if necessary. Unlikely the CPS would take it that far though.

That is ridiculous! I have every confidence the magistrates would throw it out in 5 minutes.

KatieScarlett2833 · 26/11/2010 22:01

I can see it in your smile

wannaBe · 26/11/2010 22:03

don't believe a word of it. Hmm

whethergirl · 26/11/2010 22:12

What everyone else has said, how ridiculous. I was in a a local shop the other day and had my granny trolley with me, and as I was buying quite a lot of stuff, I just put it int the trolley without thinking (like I always do at Sainsburys). An assistant came over and asked if I could use a basket, I replied yes of course and emptied my trolley, she then asked "Is there anything else in there?" and insisted on looking in my trolley, whilst being very snooty with me (and not apologising when she found nothing else in there). She then got a shop assistant to follow my every move until I left the store (after buying £50 worth of stuff). I complained to the manager and came in a few days later, with my dp and ds, spoke with her and told her I felt insulted and humiliated because she clearly presumed I was a shoplifter, she did apologise.

The way I see it, the problems shops have with shoplifters is not my problem. I'm not a shoplifter and don't expect to be treated like one. I would be raging if I were you!

tummysgoingslowly · 26/11/2010 22:14

what's so embarrassing about men's boxers?

don't believe a word of it either

ThwopGoesTheMooncup · 26/11/2010 22:41

Pink- no I don't and would be happy to advise how to deal with criminal proceedings. Don't think arrest was unlawful though, and pointing out the practical problems in taking it further if OP thinks it was.

juneybean · 26/11/2010 22:42

I can see it in your smile

juneybean · 26/11/2010 22:42

Oops I can't remember if I meant eyes or if Katie went wrong.

epic fail!

KatieScarlett2833 · 26/11/2010 22:46

I went wrong. I claim your epic fail and raise you a "Are you somewhere feeling lonely - or is lonely feeling you?"
