When you have a fever you often lack an appetite, and may well vomit, and when you have a cold chewing opens up your nose and swallowing eases your throat. So, yes, it does make sense to me. Though I wouldn't starve a feverish child who wanted to eat.

I transfer my experience from Dumb animals to DD. When little calves have a fever we give them metacam - cow nurofen and then they eat. DD has a fever I give her Nurofen and\or Calpol depending on the level of fever and her other symptoms she then feels better and eats.
When an animal or person is sick their calorific requirement can rise to twice normal levels to fix the problem therefore getting eating and particularly protein as the whole immune thing is based on protein will fix it faster.
