Considering buying some Uggs...

I know I have been vocal about them being vile, which they are, but the past two mornings walking DS to school, my feet have been frozen in my leather boots. Loads of mums have got them on at the school and I've been jealously eyeing up theiir fur-lining, thinking how snuggly theit toes must feel.

I might get some. AIBU or should I stick with my leather boots and freeze yet not worry that I look like Kerry Katona? Confused

Celtic Sheepskin do a style called "Aqualamb" which is apparently considerably more weather proof than the traditional lambskin

Oh, another tip/fact

If you spot clean your Uggs and they are chestnut colour, you can lose some of the pigment. But if you have slopped something on them, you kind of have to spot clean them or live with the stain. The solution lies in Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs Medium which is a spray on leg colour which happens to match exactly the pigment of Ugg Chestnut.

I'd have these but ouch at the price. Am tempted by the Dorothy Perkins ones I linked to higher up though

asbolutelyfabulous · 24/11/2010 14:52

I couldn't get by without my uggs and I don't care what anyone else thinks. I even look forward to winter so that I can wear them. Mine are black Merrils (Australian brand) and they go with everything. One of the best purchases I've ever made. Let the Uggs be with you.

PhishFoodAddiction · 24/11/2010 14:56

Oh Uggs are awful- and I say that having bought a pair for an extortionate price!

They are crap for school run as the soles are really slippy for some reason...

And my wide feet boggled them out of shape.

They made my legs look like tree trunks.

I hated them about 5 minutes after they arrived.

2blessed2bstressed · 24/11/2010 15:04

Well, I've got several pairs of Uggs (American Ugg Australia ones), and think they're great in the winter. Warm, cosy, and the Kensington ones are definitely outdoorsy looking and couldn't be mistaken for slippers.
I don't really care if people think I look chavvy Hmm I don't think I do, and my opinion is the only one that matters regarding what I put on my feet!
Was accompanying my mum to one of her simulated patient things (you pretend to be ill, so that student doctors can practice their bedside manner on you - excellent pin money for retired lady with love of am-dram), and Professor said my feet were the healthies he'd ever seen. I put that down to never wearing heels.

TattyDevine · 24/11/2010 15:30

2blessed are the Kensington fully sheepskin lined? So, upper and sole, so you dont need socks, like the classics?

TattyDevine · 24/11/2010 15:39

Ah its okay I've had a proper look now and they are.

winnybella · 24/11/2010 15:45

No other shoe kept my feet as warm as Uggs.

Imo they only look chavvy when you wear them as part of the dress up look.

For a school run or to go to the shops, I wear them with jeans and long grey coat.

I don't care anyway- they are so very comfortable and warm.

superv1xen · 24/11/2010 16:25

Get some cupcakes. make sure you get them from a reliable source as there are a lot of fakes about. DP just bought me a pair (from office so i know they are real) and they are really lovely, so warm and comfy. i got the short chocolate brown classics.

TattyDevine · 24/11/2010 17:38

Office, Shudoo, Very.co.uk (spread the cost with 3 interest free payments and 10% off your first order!) and all big department stores will all be authentic.

Do be careful of eBay. Even if they are authentic, if they are cheap, they are possibly a factory second. Most are fake. There is a lot of detail about authenticity on the official UggAustralia website.

None of that matters if you deliberately buy a non UggAustralia brand that doesn't claim to be them, but is genuine sheepskin. Celtic Sheepskin are great, Hush do a nice short and long boot akin to the classic but are a little less sturdy but perfect for a houseboot and school run/pop to the shops boot. I dont recommend Uggstore.com.au as I've had the sole come away a couple of weeks later (my shoe guy in town glued them back free of charge) and then a few months later my toe went through the top which implies incredibly thin sheepskin. They are still reasonably pricey and take about 2 weeks to arrive. But I do recommend New Zealand Nature company. Their price includes shipping and they arrive quickly.

I got my husband's slippers from there and my children's "Uggs" all come from there.

dinosaurkisses · 24/11/2010 17:43

DP bought me a pair about two years ago- they're black suede but very much like the newer Kensington style. I have three pairs of the classics as well, but I cannot recommend the more structured styles enough. If you get them in the correct size, your feet will be totally encased in fluffy sheepskin- no need for socks. Also, the sole is waaaaay thicker and solid than the classics- the foot shouldn't move about and as a result your ankles and arches feel well supported.

The only downside of Uggs is how you forget that not all shoes are as toasty- I wore my converse into town the other day and I expected to look down and find my tootsies turned into blocks of ice. I'm now too scared to wear any other shoe outside. Like Shoe Stockholm Syndrome.

TattyDevine · 24/11/2010 17:48

I agree with Dinosaur. Once you've had a "proper" outdoor street style, you feel a bit "naked" in your Classics. Classics are bloody great for round the house and really quick trips to get petrol or whatever. You then get slightly less precious about cooking in them because they are not "seen" outdoors so if they get a little tatty after a while its no big deal.

Though I acutally spilt a whole glass of red wine on a pair of classics and put them through the washing machine and they are good as gold (though were slightly crispy when they first dried and I had to give them a bit of a massage with a nubuk block)

anothernewname09 · 24/11/2010 17:56

I own a pair of Uggs.

I would not wear them out of the house.

I have just bought a pair of mega comfy heels with sheepskin inside by Jasper Conran at Debenhams.

I always wear heels as im 5ft 1.

Will try to link.

anothernewname09 · 24/11/2010 18:03

Here is the link

TattyDevine · 24/11/2010 18:23

They look nice, though they are faux fur as opposed to sheepskin.

linziluv · 24/11/2010 18:38

LOL! I absolutely LOVE my uggs! Got 4 pairs in fact! I couldn't give a monkey's what people think Ie "chav", "ugly"...have converted my mum too lol. I think I might just have to ask santa for a pair from the ugg with jimmy choo range.
Get a pair...you'll never look back!
Oh, and it's worth paying for genuine uggs/equivalent...they last much longer.

anothernewname09 · 24/11/2010 18:50

Yes Tatty you are right!

They are comfy and warm though and IMO look better than Uggs.

Although I am biased as I'm not tall and 'willow-ey' enough to really 'wear' Uggs!!

TattyDevine · 24/11/2010 19:23

They look lovely and warm and not crippling!

I would say most "shoes" look better than Uggs.

Uggs are an excellent version of what they are. Shoes that are predominantly about comfort and warmth. They are a luxe version of a comfort boot/slipper even.

Lots of nice faux or even real fur (if your budget stretches to it) embellished heeled boots this season!

AnyFucker · 24/11/2010 20:16

I borrow my teenage dd's Uggs when she is at school Wink

I actually love them, but cannot justify the expense (for myself) for a pair of slippers

TattyDevine · 24/11/2010 20:20

It is a lot for "houseshoes"

If you only wear them at home, or, at a stretch, to put the bins out / get a pint of milk etc, they will last.

If they get really splodgey, a cool wash, stuff with Bounty/Plenty/kitchenroll or even newspaper, and put in the airing cupboard. Brush with a newbuck brush when dry.

If the footbed gets sparse/stinky (mine never do - but I'm not a smelly foot person) then you buy a £6 insole from Celtic sheepskin and cut to size and they are literally like new.

You can "rejuvenate" them each winter season, basically.

They are a lot of money though, I can see that. But dont "waste" your money on things only people can see. Spoil yourself with something you can wear for years during cold, miserable seasons at home.

Learn to lounge.

Its good for the soul...

cupcakebakerer · 24/11/2010 20:29

Uggs should be worn for the sheer luxurious comfiness of them - bliss. Aesthetically they are heinous but I wouldn't be without mine now.

marriednotdead · 24/11/2010 20:36

I find Uggs too unsupportive for my dodgy feet.

Just bought a pair of Fitflop mukluks and they are comfy, supportive and toasty warm

weepootle · 24/11/2010 20:40

I just love my Uggs and wish people would stop going on about them wearing down on the heels- the real ones do not do it! I have classic shorts and classic talls, both on their 2nd year and still look great.

They are most definitely not worn by chavs on my school run- quite the opposite.

I love the Kensingtons but I'm short and they were a very bad length on me- not flattering at all. I'd love to try some of the Plumdales, they've really grown on me.

usualsuspect · 24/11/2010 20:44

Err I'm torn ..they look so warm
