Considering buying some Uggs...

I know I have been vocal about them being vile, which they are, but the past two mornings walking DS to school, my feet have been frozen in my leather boots. Loads of mums have got them on at the school and I've been jealously eyeing up theiir fur-lining, thinking how snuggly theit toes must feel.

I might get some. AIBU or should I stick with my leather boots and freeze yet not worry that I look like Kerry Katona? Confused

I would love to buy a pair, sadly I don't have enough money for a real pair so will go without.
DDs teacher last year was from Sydney. She had a pair and wore them in the Swiss snow.

mangoandlime · 24/11/2010 12:51

Kensington are the only Ugg I'd consider. And I like the new retro Ugg.

I've really gone off them lately though, just so, meh.

FranSanDisco · 24/11/2010 12:55

Mine have proper soles and good support, thank you all for your concern Smile. I have worn them in the snow and rain and they have kept me warm and dry so not really slippers Shock. As for suggesting DM's as an alternative am speechless Wink.

scaryteacher · 24/11/2010 13:12

I am told that Uggs cause untold damage to feet by causing arches to fall as they do not have proper arch support and thus damage knee, hip and back. Feet also 'go over' and you don't stand right in Uggs,

Several physios recommend inserts for shoes as a result of people wearing Uggs.

mangoandlime · 24/11/2010 13:20

They always seem to collapse at the back & sides & spread out with wear. They also look old after about a month.

TheFeministParent · 24/11/2010 13:22

Mango....fake ones do that, not the real thing.

mickeyjohn · 24/11/2010 13:27

I LOVE my UGGS!! I don't care if they are Chavtastic! I am the one with cosy feet! (btw, I have the ones with the more sturdy soles -they are more expensive but better i nthe wet than the normal ones) PLus they are into their 3rd winter and not collapsed at all - only the fakes do that!

FranSanDisco · 24/11/2010 13:32

Fake ones don't have sheepskin either so basically neither use nor ornament. My Uggs are on 4th winter and my celtic sheepskin classics on 2nd winter. Both as good as new and I don't mind being called a chav as long as my feet are warm Grin.

lucky1979 · 24/11/2010 13:33

I love my Uggs too :)
My black cardi boots are the most comfortable thing in the world and I have lovely toasty warm feet.

mangoandlime · 24/11/2010 14:04

TheFeministParent. I'm actually talking about the real ones. I've seen enough to come to that very conclusion & my Sister's (before she saw the light) did the very same.

mangoandlime · 24/11/2010 14:04

And they were real! She doesn't 'do' fakes.

The3Bears · 24/11/2010 14:13

I love mine have worn them in snow and rain so warm aswell :) And it is only the fake ones that collapse :)

mangoandlime · 24/11/2010 14:15

If you want to look like Bungle with toe fungus, go right ahead! If you like 'em, you like 'em. Smile

LadyWellian · 24/11/2010 14:17

I've defo seen collapsed real ones. Friend of mine has Fitflop Mukluks - they've got proper support and a thick enough sole that they don't fall over at the back. She loves them. I'm still in two minds about the whole 'Womble feet' thing, whether Uggs or whatever. They do look warm though...

FranSanDisco · 24/11/2010 14:22

Mangoandlime they were real fakes I think Wink Grin.

izzybiz · 24/11/2010 14:23

Must depend on individuals feet then with regard to real Ugg collapse.

I bought my firts pair 3 years ago and they are still going strong, they have been worn in all weathers, have not collapsed, and I still wear them now.

I have since bought the grey knit ones, they were fab in the snow early in the year and now have some suede in chocolate brown, def worth the pennies, I love mine!

Francagoestohollywood · 24/11/2010 14:25

Well, yes, they are ugly. BUT, if you feel the cold (like I do) they are heaven.

pointydog · 24/11/2010 14:27

Just get a decent pair of fleece lined boots.

mangoandlime · 24/11/2010 14:27

If that's what makes you feel better, Fran!

John Lewis have gone down-hill....Smile

DirtyMartini · 24/11/2010 14:28

Someone needs to link to a decent alternative. I too am being tempted, and I don't want to give in. But it's cold here.

cleanairplease · 24/11/2010 14:30

YAB very U. They are ugly and common.

A few thoughts/facts about Uggs

  1. The ugg shuffle is more common with the "classic short" and "classic tall" which both have a fairly flexible epv sole, and that coupled with the fact that the sheepskin "gives" a bit over time means they tend to end up quite spacious, hence the shuffle. They do have some support at the back, but there is little at the front, which is not dangerous in terms of foot health but will encourage the "shuffle". I shuffle about at home in my Classic Short ones, which I consider a slipper generally, and would only pop to the bins or the corner shop in them.
  1. I believe the Kensington are shearling lined but leather outer, and whilst bloody expensive, would be a more durable version with more longevity than other styles. I've been looking out for a "perfect" leather ugg style - this might be it, I haven't investigated it further yet as I'm enjoying my Plumdales too much (see next item!)
  1. "Outdoor" or "Street" styles of Ugg like the Plumdale, Ultimate, Sundance, etc. have a lot more in terms of support and oomph. The sole is very much more hard wearing with more tread and is less flexible (to the extent that when I come in for the day I'd take them off and put my Classic short ones on because they dont feel slipperish enough). I couldn't shuffle in them if I tried. They are a different type of shoe.
  1. Plumdale and some of the new styles they have this season are more streamlined around the foot and ankle. I dont know what they've done, there's an extra seam or something in there, but they are a lot less "teddy bear's foot chopped off" looking - love that description to the first response poster who's name escapes me, apologies.
  1. If nothing else, Uggs are incredibly warm and comfortable. You can't please everyone so you may as well please yourself. For everyone who hates them, there is someone who loves them and envies them. Buy to please yourself and satisfy your own comfort levels - anything else is vanity in its own right.
  1. You can buy sheepskin insoles from Celtic Sheepskin for very little money, which go in any other spacious shoe. This combined with a nice wool sock would boost the warmth of your current leather boots and cost a fraction of the price.
  1. Sheepskin is not that durable in terms of weatherproofing (i.e its not waterproof) and stain proofing. Slop some cooking oil or coffee on them and they are never quite the same. Wash them and they do come up fine but never as butter soft and sumptuous as they were new. You have to like them for what they are and accept that they are expensive but serve a particular purpose to get them anyway.
  1. There are lots of other styles than Ugg Australia, which are made in China for a US company called Deckers. They are not made in Australia. I dont consider Uggs "fake" as such unless they have been sold to you at great expense under the guise of them being made by Deckers, OR if they are synthetic (not sheepskin). Any genuine sheepskin boot that does not claim to be "Ugg Australia" is probably also very nice to wear and often a reasonable amount cheaper than "real" Uggs. But they are never super cheap - if they are £20, they are probably not sheepskin, or they are a dogey factory second, and I have seen no exception to this rule but would be happily corrected.
WanderingSheep · 24/11/2010 14:32

I love mine - I don't care if I look chav! I got them because last winter was dreadfully cold and I hate having cold feet but they are just heaven outside! Also, I'm pregnant and wanted flat boots that were warm. The only other boots I have have a bit of a heel and are not good for the slippery, frosty mornings. I Just chuck 'em on for pre-school run and off I go!

It's snowing here now so any cosy boots are not unreasonable!
