Oh, I loved that ronshar! :)

mrsruffallo · 23/11/2010 10:00

Nothing nasty about that, I think you got the wrong end of the stick.
I liked Extras, didn't like the office.

IntergalacticHussy · 23/11/2010 10:04

he's a dickhead. 'David Brent' is just him being himself afaik. He's not being ironic at all. same with his stand up.

ronshar · 23/11/2010 10:04

Twas the best bit of the film I think Wink

Ryoko · 23/11/2010 10:39

I've never liked him, he comes across as an arrogant arsehole.

cheekyseamonkey · 23/11/2010 10:53

YANBU - I think he's an arse. I know KP is 'in on it' but how is it funny? It's mean & sends up bullying. I also can't watch/listen, just in case he laughs. Do love the office though, seriously used to be managed by someone just like that - now manage them (mwahhahahah)

PhishFoodAddiction · 23/11/2010 10:57

Gah, I loathe RG. Arrogant, irritating and not that funny.

SpringHeeledJack · 23/11/2010 11:06

I find him and KP and Steven Merchant a bit boring these days- they seem to have stuck on the same old schtick for a few years now.

We watched the Office tother day for the first time in ages- I don't know if I've got more sensitive in the intervening years but I had to put my fingers in my ears loads and get dp to kick me when the truly awful bits were finished

twas still fucking geeeeenius though...

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 23/11/2010 11:14

Office and Extras were brilliant. Thing is, I watched the Office under the impression that RG was playing a part, and then the more exposure he gets, the more you realise it's actually him. Yes RG has more of a sense of irony than David Brent. But the fondness for massve ego-trips, liking for picking on people, all the "ooh wait til you meet my mate Boffy, he's hilarious" stuff is all real. Can't watch him any more.

And yes obviously he is also greasy, on a blatant wish-fulfilment thing with the "romantic hero" stuff (no-one went to that film though, surely?), and totally cold-eyed.

PuppyMonkey · 23/11/2010 11:24

OMG can you not see this is a set up, a sketch, Karl P is on on the joke, RG is playing an exagerated version of himself, for a laugh???? Not particularly hilarious I agree, but not nasty either. Hmm

Numberfour · 23/11/2010 11:57

"Is the Op the same one who accused Peter kay of mocking autism the other week - when he was just...err...lying on a sofa."
No, not me.

Abcinthia · 23/11/2010 11:58

I don't think it's nasty, but I don't think it's funny either. Ricky Gervais just grates on me. I don't find him funny at all.

HotchpotchHoney · 23/11/2010 12:08

The whole series was completley staged and scripted. That was the thing that annoyed me, I did (and maybe naivley) believe that it was going to be an unscripted show with Karl making genuine witty and funny comments. But after watching a couple it was so obviou it was all scripted, all be it well scripted, but it took the edge of it for me.
dbf on the other hand thought it was hilarious.

Numberfour · 23/11/2010 12:09

"Smiling I don't think it was banter. I think the bloke was totally pissed off. David Brent was Ricky Gervais not a charcter. I think he is a bully and some people haven't figured out yet that's its not an act! Pub Landlord you know is a piss take. Ricky is just a prat."
what this PP says.

HotchpotchHoney · 23/11/2010 12:09

Oh an Rickys laugh annoyed me after a while, the whole sounding like a complete dumbass and laughing at your friends discomfort, with a very obviously fake laugh.

JamieLeeCurtis · 23/11/2010 12:10

I am generally speaking a pretty intelligent person, and I haven't seen a lot of the stuff with KP, but that clip makes me really uncomfortable. It does seem like KP is genuinely annoyed and RG is taking the piss.

HotchpotchHoney · 23/11/2010 12:11

TBH hes very typical of a lot of men of his age from the area he grew up in (speaking as someone who spent her formative years living there and going to school just down the road from his house). There are a lot of now grown men who still think all the practical joke and bit of a wide boy comments are hilarious, luckily for RG he made a fortune from his way of thinking and brand of comedy, the rest just still live there convincing themselves they are best friends with RG!

Malificence · 23/11/2010 13:31

He's a dickhead - so not funny.

Nuttybear · 23/11/2010 14:22

Oi! Numberfour are you copying me? I'm going to tell on you Smile or great minds think alike Smile

fartmeistergeneral · 23/11/2010 15:14

Jamieleecurtis - I can completely assure you that this is what they do!!!!!! NO WAY was Karl pissed off. THE WHOLE THING WAS STAGED FOR COMEDY EFFECT.

JamieLeeCurtis · 23/11/2010 15:16

OK OK

I did see him on Loose Women (I know), and I was struck by how genuinely nice he seemed

fartmeistergeneral · 23/11/2010 15:20

sorry, my post was a bit over the top, sorry Jamieleecurtis!!

He does come across as totally arrogant, but it's almost expected of him now I think. I reckon it's to cover up for the fact that he's short, fat and quite unattractive (speaking as a big fan!) - although the constant self deprecating in films is a bit wearing.

OK, we know you think you're fat, have a pug nose, a certain age and lacking in height. Move on man!

And never, ever, ever play the romantic lead again.

BonniePrinceBilly · 23/11/2010 15:34

YAWN.
Lets speak slowly for those who can't quite grasp....
Some people may find it funny
some may not.

You don't get to decide what other people find funny, or what comedians talk about.

And anyone thinking that KP doesn't know whats going on and really is that dim, is far more insulting than RG, who understands that it is a planned joke.

Suncottage · 23/11/2010 15:50

I enjoyed The Office but have never enjoyed anything else he has done. In Stardust he played David Brent, in A Night at the Museum he played David Brent.

Whenever I see him smiling for the cameras I always get the feeling he is thinking "You Muppets' or something really nasty. The smile never quite reaches his eyes.

He is right up there with Russell Brand as far as I am concerned. Makes my teeth itch.

Lynli · 23/11/2010 15:56

I have always thought he would be hysterical, if only he was half as funny as he thinks he is.
