to wonder why I am paying £20 for scheduled delivery it should be 'scheduled' within a slot smaller than 6 hours?

Fridge-freezer. Bought it yesterday. It can only come on weekend or a Monday as there is no-one here otherwise. So we paid for it to be delivered today. Last night DH got a text with a ref number which would tell us when the delivery would be made. Hurray, we thought, we will be able to do stuff either side of the delivery time. We looked it up on their website. 'Your delivery will be made between 12:00 and 18:00' Hmm.

So DH has taken the children out and I've stayed in which is a bit of a bugger. Now just wondering, what the hell sort of hold-up would mean they could be up to 6 hours late? It's not really a 'schedule' is it? A schedule would dictate when they are delivering what where - which would enable them to give their customers a reasonable idea of when the thing would arrive?

Oh go on tell me that all your DPs, friends or family are delivery drivers and I'm being an arsey cow....

The delivery drivers have a set route that they must take for deliveries. This is down to many companies having to comply with environmental/ fuel costing policies set by their head office.
If you are towards the end of the route, your goods are further back on the lorry and cannot be delivered earlier.
It's better than the days when you had to wait in absoltely all day.

Ormirian · 21/11/2010 15:20

OK I can see that. But if they know I am at the end of the route they could tell me it's within a 2 hour slot between 16:00 and 18:00 for example.

Besides, you are paying a premium for the extra the companies pay their drivers on weekends. Most delivery companies class MOnday- friday as working days and weekends as overtime/ special conditions.

Ormirian · 21/11/2010 15:21

It cost the same the rest of the week. Which surprise me TBH

they don't know what sort of traffic they will hit in the middle of the route, so it's a bit pointless saying yes, we'll be there between 2 and 4 if the traffic is heavy. They then end up being "late", you compain to the company and they get an earful so they end up miserable and surly. By giving a wider delivery window they can, in 95% of cases, deliver within that time, unless there are exceptional conditions.

SantasNutellaFairy · 21/11/2010 15:24

really?Shock

taintedpaint · 21/11/2010 15:24

When you place the delivery, they are unlikely to know exactly how many stops there are going to be though. Hence not giving you a more exact time and pissing you off when they don't make it.

SantasNutellaFairy · 21/11/2010 15:26

did you order through comet?

SantasNutellaFairy · 21/11/2010 15:27

If you did they have the orders on there which people have paid £25 to have delivered within a 2 hour slot so have to schedule the route around them as well.

I am so glad I don't work in logistics!

Ormirian · 21/11/2010 15:28

Not Comet no.

Honeydragon · 21/11/2010 15:31

So what fridge freezer is it? I need a new one and as you are clearly stuck in all afternoon you can tell me what to buy Grin

YANBU to be annoyed at being stuck indoors on a Saturday - if you don't tell me what damn fridge freezer to buy then I will, of course change it to YABU Wink

Ormirian · 21/11/2010 15:55

We're buying a Beko grey jobby. 11cu. A rating. That's all I can tell you. We went for the biggest one that was cheap Grin

The old one we inherited with the house was seriously crap. Tiny fridge bit, 2 seperate freezers one of which kept defrosting. So anything would be an inprovment.

InkyStamp · 21/11/2010 16:12

We had the same issue. However we were told that if you call on the day of delivery you can get a more accurate time. Doesnt help now though does it? Grin Sorry!!

Honeydragon · 21/11/2010 16:17

Aaaaaaargh - I have cabin fever.... I have been trapped indoors with poorly children so long I don't know what day it is!!!!

They can do it if they want to. I ordered a couple of things from Bebeco and on both occasions they sent me an email in the morning giving one hour slot for the delivery.

racmac · 21/11/2010 18:04

YANBU

I placed an order and received an email telling me delivery would be between 9.53 and 10.53 next day - they arrived 9.55 - they can do it and i was very impressed

umf · 21/11/2010 18:20

That sucks. Lots of companies do much better than that nowadays.

Ordered a birthpool-in-a-box lately and they were exemplary.

Avantia · 21/11/2010 18:29

YANBU - we have ahd a couple of deliveries recently - one form homebase - delievery slot between 10am and 11am - delivery man phoned about 9am and said would be ariving between 10 and 10.30am - arrived 10.05am .

Another delievry - they said they wpould phone 30 mins before delievery which is fine as had enough time to do school drop off , various local errands, inlcuding a visit Costa Coffee , delievery man sure enough phoned me on mobile saying where he was and would be with me in next 30 miins - sure enough he was !

It can be done and £20 for scheduled delivery anytime between 6 hrs is a rip off ,both delieveries above where free !
