To wonder if fat people overfeed their babies....

Ok...bit of a judgy one I am guilty. I am ready to get flamed!

But I have been to a few baby groups there and cannot help but wonder why a few (VERY) large mothers seem to have overweight babies.

One this morning had a 4 and a half month old who weighed 20lbs and she was weaning him already too. She also told me he has 7 7oz bottles a day. He was just over 8lb when born 2 weeks over due.

My DD is 9 months and only weighs 18lbs and is fully weaned. She is on the 25th centile and I am not underfeeding her!! :)

I was a bit Shock when she told me he is weaning him. Is she over feeding??
Has anyone else wondered this?

Yes we do. They are weaned on Maccdys and blended up mars bars. They are encouraged to eat battered bananas for their dessert.

HTH.

sazlocks · 16/11/2010 15:24

and thin people underfeed theirs I suppose ?

idobelieveinfairies · 16/11/2010 15:24

You are nuts!

LittlebearH · 16/11/2010 15:25

No...I should have put "some" in the title. I dont mean in general. Just in some cases...of what I have seen!

Well if fat babies are overfed then doesn't it follow that your thin baby must be underfed?

bloody hell has mn gone fattist or something

Funkychunkymunky · 16/11/2010 15:27

I'm overweight. DD is 12 months and has always been on the 50th centile. She won't eat anything when she feels full. She has never overeaten.

YABVU

Maybe your DD is being underfed since she is less than the average weight?

Rockbird · 16/11/2010 15:28

It is attitudes like that that make me unhealthily obsessed about DD's size. She is not even 3 ffs and I am very much aware that if she was to get even the slightest bit chubby, it'd be my fault according to people like you. And you know who gives her biscuits for breakfast? My slim DH, that's who. So thanks for that pile of horseshit Hmm

FlameGrilledMama · 16/11/2010 15:28

Do not be so judgemental I could say as my DD was bf and on the 98th percentilli and skinny that you must be starving yours (and she is skinny) DS was on 50th percentille and very skinny.

However I know the reason they are skinny is because both were born long DS was the longest the MW had delievered. Op It is called genetics.

ChickensHaveNoLips · 16/11/2010 15:28

Can you over feed a baby? Mine used to spit stuff out if they'd had enough.

sheeplikessleep · 16/11/2010 15:28

VT - what's a hardhard Grin?

LittlebearH · 16/11/2010 15:28

Hence why I put my LO is not underfed.

These are not just overweight women. They are huge and this was no chubby baby. It had a roll of flesh over the top of his jeans...

YABU.

My son was 6lb 7oz at birth, my daughter was 9lb 4oz and is 98th centile at just over 3 months old. She's EBF.

I am 5ft 10in and a size 12, so not exactly porking it.

Some babies are just bouncing when they're born, and some aren't. Just as all adults come in different builds.

FFS Angry Do you think that fat = stupid ? Do you think everyone is fat because they eat junk ? I am fat because I eat too much but it's not McDonalds, thankyou.

I am a well educated woman and am determined that my daughter will NOT grow up with the issues around food that I have - so no, I do not overfeed her. I see plenty of fat children with small women

StealthPomBear · 16/11/2010 15:30

but do you not think they might be looking at her and wondering if you underfeed her?

Galena · 16/11/2010 15:30

Some fat people have large babies, some don't.
Some thin people have large babies, some don't.
Variety is the spice of life.

I'm very obese. My 19mo DD weighs the same as your 9mo. I am not underfeeding or overfeeding her. She eats loads but is still small. C'est la vie.

ChickensHaveNoLips · 16/11/2010 15:30

My eldest was long and slim, my youngest had six buttocks until he was 6 months old They're both tall and slim now. I never considered putting DS2 on a diet.

RunningOutOfIdeas · 16/11/2010 15:31

My DD has always been between the 75th and 91st centiles for weight. She was weaned at 4 months for medical reasons. Does that mean I have overfed her? Of course not. She is on the 91st centile for height so her weight is just fine.

sims2fan · 16/11/2010 15:32

Ok, I am overweight, and I know that if/when I have a child I will make sure that I feed it healthily as I come from a 'big' family and so does my husband, and I do believe that some people are genetically predisposed to putting on weight more easily than others (one day science will back me up!) and I am sure that a child of mine will be one of them! So I will not allow them to stuff themselves with sweets and crisps all day, because of my weight issues. So perhaps because I'm big (though trying to do something about it) my kids will actually eat better than those with stick thin parents who don't worry about what they or their kids eat, as it never seems to turn into fat anyway!

Having said that, my SIL is overweight and she feeds her toddler on sweets and crisps a lot of the time, literally in the place of actual meals on some days, so some bigger people are guilty of overfeeding (or feeding them too much rubbish) their kids yes, as are some thin ones.

FindingMyMojo · 16/11/2010 15:32

YABU and PLEASE stop under feeding your baby. It's cruel & will lead to a lifetime of issues for her.

LittlebearH · 16/11/2010 15:33

I am not fatist I prob should have worded it better, but DD is clambering over me and rushed my OP. I just wondered as the thought entered my head. Of course I dont mean all fat people. And I know all ababies are different. But should a 41/2 month old be being weaned if he weighs 20lbs??

VinegarTits · 16/11/2010 15:34
