To wonder if fat people overfeed their babies....

Ok...bit of a judgy one I am guilty. I am ready to get flamed!

But I have been to a few baby groups there and cannot help but wonder why a few (VERY) large mothers seem to have overweight babies.

One this morning had a 4 and a half month old who weighed 20lbs and she was weaning him already too. She also told me he has 7 7oz bottles a day. He was just over 8lb when born 2 weeks over due.

My DD is 9 months and only weighs 18lbs and is fully weaned. She is on the 25th centile and I am not underfeeding her!! :)

I was a bit Shock when she told me he is weaning him. Is she over feeding??
Has anyone else wondered this?

OP posts:

I'm 'normal' weight and gave birth to a 6lb6oz baby. She was small until she started solids. Now, at 14 months her weight is too high. Why? She likes eating and has a big appetite.

Nothing more, nothing less.

YABVU.

sazlocks · 16/11/2010 15:53

Agree its not universal. I was obese when I had both of my boys (now a few pounds over the normal weight for my height) and they were born on the 9th centile and remain there now. Both EBF til 6 months and then a variety of food since then. Both crawled early and never stop all day !

OneFishTwoFish · 16/11/2010 15:53

My DD was 7pm at birth and on the 25th centile. She is now 14 weeks, 16lb and on the 98th. She is exclusively breast fed and I am 5'5" and a size 6!

Surely it is impossible to overfeed a breast fed baby? I was just sort of assuming she would slim down when she starts moving!

ApocalypseCheese · 16/11/2010 15:53

Oooohhhh, beat by a 1/4 inch Grin

My nephew was like that, he wasn't very long and was just under 8Ib but resembled a skinned pigeon, we reckoned all the weight was in his bones

He's still very slim, but weighs around 5.5 stone (he's 9) and has a very long big toe Hmm

FindingMyMojo - there is a world of difference in writing a poorly-thought-out OP with no intention to hurt, for which the OP has apologised, and writing what you just did...
Ditto for other posters who wrote similar.

FlameGrilledMama · 16/11/2010 15:55

SantasMooningArse that must of been quite scary for you Sad hope he is thriving now though?

SantasMooningArse · 16/11/2010 15:55

One fish absolutely it is impossible to overfeed a BF baby

Don;t worry over it, you're doing great

SantasMooningArse · 16/11/2010 15:56

Ah Flame LOL

Tis Peachy

RJRabbit · 16/11/2010 15:56

Not every thought that pops into your head deserves to be out there for all to read.

But then again, if you're that ignorant, I suppose you may learn something from asking the question.

FlameGrilledMama · 16/11/2010 15:57

ApocalypseCheese My little boy is 4 and yes he is still tall and skinny no matter what I do I used to stress but now I have accepted that that is his body size Smile

MoonUnitAlpha · 16/11/2010 15:58

Also, overfeeding can be an issue with ff babies can't it? Babies need to suck, and bottlefed babies can't meet their sucking needs at a bottle without taking milk. A baby might cry after finishing a bottle because they still want to suck, so is then thought to be hungry and given more milk.

sapphireblue · 16/11/2010 15:59

To be honest I don't think there's any such thing as an overweight 4.5 month old baby. Unless the mother is adding blended mars bars to its bottle?

DD2 was born 9lb 6oz and weaned at 4.5 months (on HV advice). She now weighs just under 20lbs at 9 months old, which puts her on the 75th centile(ish). She's also on the 75th for height, so is not at all overweight.

I'm a very overweight size 20.

To be honest I find your post slightly offensive.

ChickensHaveNoLips · 16/11/2010 16:00

Really? My FF babies would launch the bottle across the room if offered it when they weren't hungry. Don't BF babies comfort suck?

VinegarTits · 16/11/2010 16:01

maybe OP thinks that actual fat comes out of obese breasts instead of milk?

Fizzywaterlover · 16/11/2010 16:02

ok my head exploded when i read the op. i am over it now. :)

everyone is different really. even babies. (she says just having fed her gorgeous little guy another bottle. :) )

OneFishTwoFish · 16/11/2010 16:02

Thank you SMA. I have to admit a certain sense of pride when I look at her big chubby arms and legs and tummy and think "I did that with my milk!"

Might scoff some more choc to celebrate.

MoonUnitAlpha · 16/11/2010 16:02

Chickens - as I understand it bf babies can better control the flow of milk and comfort suck at the breast without consuming much.

ChickensHaveNoLips · 16/11/2010 16:05

But surely if a baby is full, taking in more milk just results in copious spewing?

TattyDevine · 16/11/2010 16:08

If a formula fed baby keeps drinking in order to satisfy the sucking though, the minute they consume too much they puke it up dont they?

NW20 · 16/11/2010 16:09

Actually yes that is true, I feel slightly reassured as a lot a spewing goes on! Probably 25% of what goes in comes back up!

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 16/11/2010 16:11

a FF baby will stop drinking (or puke up afterwards) if they have too much to drink.

DS2 was particularly good at the projectile sort (was good as it meant I rarely had to change clothes - but did involve an awful lot of carpet scrubbing).

My DS's were all 17/18lb at 4 months old. ( of EBF, mixed feeding and FF) - they were onlh 7lb 6ish when born though.

I have no doubt if they'd have been bigger babies when they were born then they'd have been easily 20lb by 4 months.

DS1 was a right porker (he was the EBF one) - he's tall(ish) and skinny now.

DS2 (FF) was a scrawny little thing - now a strapping nearly 7yr old

DS3 (mixed) is also very tall for his age, and was also quite "porky" when little.

Fizzywaterlover · 16/11/2010 16:12

DS pushes the bottle away when he has had enough, and spits/spews it out also. I deal with comfort sucking through the use of dummies, which are the second best invention EVER after epidurals. Grin

I find though he goes in spurts. He kinds of grows out then up then out then up IYSWIM.

He IS heaps bigger than many babies I know. We sat next to a 6 month old on a plane recently, and she was alot smaller than my bruiser. But he is still only 75th centile, so not outrageous.

jessiealbright · 16/11/2010 16:12

Chickens, apparently the baby's stomach gradually expands and the baby gets used to consuming an Atlantic of milk every two hours.

OP, fully weaned? At 9 months? I thought advice was to continue giving some milk until 1 or 2

FlameGrilledMama · 16/11/2010 16:14

SantasMooningArse Glad to hear it Smile

Fizzywaterlover · 16/11/2010 16:17

Bugger the pombear emoticon.

Can't we have an 'I'm feeling defensive' emoticon?

Would have saved me three posts.
