...who have just lost their dog.

Their elderly dog died last week and I am due to see them tomorrow, and I thought it might be a nice idea to give them a sympathy card. When my dog was euthanised, the vets sent a card soon after and i've cherished it since.

What do you all think?

if they would be touched by your gesture of course you should do it. A little kindness goes a long way.

My mum went to drop a card round at a friend's house after her cat died. My mum said she felt a bit daft when writing it, but figured that as the woman had absolutely no family, her cats were as important to her as children. Anyway, the woman was absolutely thrilled, got all teary eyed, etc, so my mum felt quite pleased that she had bothered.

Personally, I think it is a bit ridiculous. Sorry but you asked. Like sending Fathers Day cards etc from the Dog.

Aw no I think that's really lovely

Our vet sent a card after our cat was put down - along with their bill! I thought it was a nice touch though. Not sure how I would've felt about friends sending cards, but if you think your friends will appreciate it then why not?

Totally agree with crazyplatelady. Madness. My DSIL would appreciate that, but, she's fuckin bonkers and lives for her cat. Goodness knows what will happen when her reason for living stops living itself.

Do it. If someone is very attached to their dog, they will be devastated and I think a note/call or whatever is entirely appropriate.

It's about supporting their friends at an emotional time. Even if you think dogs are stupid, THEY don't think dogs are stupid and they just lost their family pet and companion.

I'd be touched by it. I'd be bereft if the moggball died - she's not my baby, but she is a slightly dotty nagging aunt type figure in this house (kind of a feline Margaret Thatcher/Anne Widdicombe). Even if it's not a formal sympathy card - just a note that you're thinking of them would be really nice - I hate people who belittle the bond you can have with a pet you've lived with for a decade or so (I've had the tripod 8 years).

My family think its hilarious to send me valentines cards from the cat which are incredibly sad but it always amuses me that they actually MAKE this stuff!

I think I have seen 'Sympathy on the loss of your pet' cards, so presumably people do send them. If you think it would be a comfort and a nice gesture, do it.

Go for it - you are expressing your sympathy at their sadness. It doesn't imply that the dog was a person, like cards "from" the dog would do. Its from you to them, because you care that they'll be upset about this.

If you're not sure, why not just send a blank card - ie not an actual 'sympathy' one and write your own message? I think it's a nice idea.

You can buy some really sweet thoughtful ones from Pets at Home, which have sympathy messages in them.
