to think, when I see overweight people at the gym...

... "well done you"

I am very patronising, aren't I? But I think it must be hard. So I am impressed. It's easy to go to the gym if you are all pert and muscley in your tank top. (I am somewhere in between)

(and nyeer to anyone who thought I would be thinking nasty things)

Oh great, what started off as a nice positive thread has turned into a fat bashing one. It's not acceptable to bash people on the basis of gender, race, religion, sexuality etc, but fine if they eat too much.

newwave · 16/11/2010 00:31

Kaloki, note the "most" that was a clue that it does not apply to 100% of people.

Why misrepresent my post so you can reply to something that wasnt implied.

MOST MOST MOST MOST MOST MOST does that help

TechLovingDad · 16/11/2010 00:32

newwave, I was asking what business it was of hers whether other people eat too much / exercise too little / have an illness.

It's not like she's looking to help, she's just judging.

MardyBra · 16/11/2010 00:32

Even with the "most" it's still a very negative post. Maybe people like you newwave put overweight people off attending a gym.

TechLovingDad · 16/11/2010 00:33

MardyBra, I think most people can choose what to eat and whether to excercise. Aside from religion, which people can choose gender, race or sexuality?

They are not remotely comparable.

MardyBra · 16/11/2010 00:33

thanks for the nice thoughts though Trillian

MardyBra · 16/11/2010 00:35

personally I'd rather be overweight than a narrow minded and judgemental.

Kaloki · 16/11/2010 00:36

But what you are missing is that fact that by saying MOST people are fat through greed is what makes it so fucking hard for those of us who have had fuck all control over it to get anything but abuse for our size, because chances are we fit into that category of "MOST".

If I said "most people with the username of newwave are wankers" does that sound like

a) I think you are a most likely a wanker (and am judging you on it)
or
b) I am not judging at all

TechLovingDad · 16/11/2010 00:38

MardyBra, I agree. I was just saying that you can't compare weight to race / gender / sexuality.

A person has the right to do whatever they like with their body. Or to be unhappy with how they look if it is out of their control. Or even if it's in their control, but they'd rather have a nice sit, than go to the gym that's costing a fortune (as in my case) Grin

TechLovingDad · 16/11/2010 00:39

Kaloki, sorry but Hahahhahahahahahah!

newwave · 16/11/2010 00:40

Mardy, please see my first post on this thread, it was about not being put off joining a gym and that most people (at my gym at least) are welcoming.

Your going to be a bit self concious about being in a place with a lot of fit and trim people but if you dont do it you will never be one of them (if thats what you want).

TechLovingDad · 16/11/2010 00:42

newwave, the irony of my gym is that most of the fit looking people stand around talking for an hour. The knackered unfit ones, like me, are too busy killing ourselves on the equipment.

newwave · 16/11/2010 00:44

Kaloki :o very subjective but you may be right.

However my point is correct notwithstanding it's effect on you due to others perceptions.

newwave · 16/11/2010 00:46

TLD, they did the getting knackered in the past to be able to stand around.

At one time I was going to the gym 5-6 times a week and working hard now 2-4 times as a sort of maintenance. I also use a rowing machine at home (in the garage) whilst watching TV.

TechLovingDad · 16/11/2010 00:49

newwave, did you leave your sense of humour at the gym?

They are much luckier than I am. I don't have an hour to chat and then another to do my workout. Incidentally, and I'm no expert, why do so many blokes do arm only excercises? Can they not see their spindly legs aren't getting any work?

newwave · 16/11/2010 00:53

TLD sorry i will add emoticons, I was being humourous.

Never noticed the arm thing myself

TechLovingDad · 16/11/2010 00:58

Lots of the guys at my gym come in and do just arm excercise, preen in mirror and repeat. Then give me dirty looks. Fine, I'm sweating like a pig and am bright red. At least my legs are in proportion Grin.

MardyBra · 16/11/2010 01:01

TechlovingDad "A person has the right to do whatever they like with their body. Or to be unhappy with how they look if it is out of their control. Or even if it's in their control, but they'd rather have a nice sit."

I agree entirely, but unfortunately I have seen time and time again "fat bashing" threads on MN which are seen to be entirely acceptable, whereas other bashing threads are not. I would say that alcoholics get plenty of support on MN, whereas foodoholics (if there is such a thing) are less tolerated.

I'm still getting an undercurrent from newwave, despite her protestations, but whatever... (Interesting that she has assumed I am overweight, which I haven't stated in this thread). Anyway, I'm hauling my (large) arse off to bed now.

newwave · 16/11/2010 01:01

TLD, those are the ones who want to be "ripped" not a good look IMO.

Kaloki · 16/11/2010 01:03

"whereas foodoholics (if there is such a thing) "

Binge Eating Disorder, and Bulimia technically.

TechLovingDad · 16/11/2010 01:05

mardybra I'm not a fan of anything bashing, myself. But what you eat and how much you excercise is controllable by the individual. If one is overweight for those reasons and won't do anything about it, then one can't complain about poor health as well.

newwave, trouble is they aren't ripped. Big arms (or guns as they call them) and little legs. I should go a lot more than I do, well actually I should just go. I enjoy it when I'm there and the feeling I have after, I just don't moitivate myself properly.

TechLovingDad · 16/11/2010 01:06

Kaloki, not necessarily. My ex, as an example, is just greedy and lazy. Grin

Kaloki · 16/11/2010 01:10

lol, I do know people like that. Grin

But yeah, was just pointing out that there is an addictive quality to overeating. Not like with drugs/cigarettes, but binge eating especially produces certain chemicals in the body (can't remember if it's serotonin or something else similar) which some people feel the need to replicate, and/or make more extreme.

Do people really go to the gym with makeup on?? Wouldn't it just kind of melt down their faces? They'd look like something from a horror film
