why won't teenagers wear a bleeding coat..

what is it with these kids? when did coats become so uncool they'd arrive at school wet-to-the-skin rather than risk being seen in any kind of waterproof outerwear.

or is it just mine.

My DD (yr 7, not even teen) is very resistant to wearing a coat. She's beginning to, now that nearly all the other girls at the bus-stop are wearing either a coat or the school hoody.

Trouble is she keeps forgetting to bring them home ... so currently somewhere at school she has warm coat, thin raincoat and hoody. DH said we should get her a pink coat and insist she wears it if there's nothing else suitable in the house in the morning

Fashion apart, the reason my DD is reluctant to take a bleeding coat is that there's nowhere to bleeding put it. She has a locker that she's never used (in year 8 now) because it's so far away from where she catches the bus moments after the bell goes that it's useless to her. So she carries everything around. She wore a proper coat in the depths of last winter, and occasionally wears a fleece over her blazer, but finds it a pain to lug round.

This is being discussed over on Teenagers. I posted there that it is not good for longterm health to not wear a coat in cold weather - increased chance of heart attacks earlier in life.

My kids stow coats in lockers.

haha not just yours. I don't understand it either. I've at least got mine to wear padded hoodie things but they're not waterproof. They must be really uncomfortable when they're wet through. At least since discovering MN, I know they're just being normal teens (if that isn't too much of an oxymoron).

Some of the hoody-wearers use an umbrella - would your DC contemplate that?

Maybe by the time they are teenagers they will have to rebel by wearing yellow kagoules

IME, boys and men in general seem to view umbrellas as unmanly. Unless playing golf, or possibly at a funeral

My ds's have both left school, but they didn't wear coats to school because there was nowhere to leave them and at their school they didn't have lockers.

They 21 & 19 now, and suddenly see the sense in coats!! Dd is 4, and happily wears a coat thank goodness.

They just can't it would seem. Otherwise sensible teenagers I have know eschew warmth and dryness in the name of I don't know what.

DD1 and her friends are beginning to show sign of coatlessness........

My 14 year old will never wear a coat anywhere, no matter what the weather.

Now my 11 year old is starting to go out of the house in a huge jumper instead. I say "coat?" and she says "no, I don't need a coat." So I'm guessing it will now be both of them.

We will even walk the dog down the lane (not exactly a fashion parade) with DD1 shivering beside me. Occasionally she says "can we go back now?" and I say "you should wear a coat!" but it never goes in.

The trouble is I think Mr Right could be about to saunter out of a hedge at any time and therefore you have to look cool everywhere.

I hated wearing coats as a teen, drove my mum mad. Thing is, I am a very 'warm' person with an excellent circulation system and I just got so darn HOT. You're burning calories like billy-o as a teen, could it be they just don't feel the cold in the same way?

Tiny Clanger has a fleece and a Superdry-style mac thing that she wears at least to the bus stop. After that, I don't know.

She won't wear a padded or, shock horror, wool coat. She seems happy enough, so I let her get on with it.

i don't get it either. on a saturday evening i see hundreds of girls wearing essentially vests and shorts for going out. how are they not freezing!??!??!?!

when i was younger and going out to clubs i still always brought a coat. its one pound ffs to put it in the cloakroom and at the end of the night i wasn't crying with the cold, my night ruined by vanity. I just don't get it and the worst bit was when your mate asks you to lend you your coat because she is freezing. Its december its northern ireland you're in a mini skirt with no tights of course your freezing but im going to teach you a lesson bring a f**king coat

This is a constant subject of conversation in my house. To be honest I've given up! Think part of the problem, apart from coats not being cool of course, is that at lots of schools there's nowhere for them to leave their coats so they have to lug them about all day. That's the usual excuse by dsd's give me anyway!

Kenobi, me too! I never wore mine and used to get drenched in the rain and frowned at by old ladies to and from school.

None of my friends wore theirs either. It's just not cool. Now I wear a waterproof on rainy school run which shows I am a proper grown up!

Wouldn't hassle DD to wear hers though. Vain hope that plain common sense will prevail one day, hopefully before she gets pneumonia.
