Ok I brought a dishwasher end of 2007. It was SMEG one and quite alot more than I would normally pay for a dishwasher but it came with 5 years warrenty, so happy to pay it.

BUT It has broken and even though I sent the warrenty card back they are saying they never recieved it and its my fault and that I should have chased it up!!

They know for a fact it was only made in November 2006 and this model comes with 5 year warrenty as standard.

So you would think they would see sense and fix my broken machine, but nope. As far as they are concerned they dont have to do anything!!
Does anyone know anything I can do?? Im hoping power of MN can help me. I thought SMEG was a good company, but been proved wrong and now Im stuck with a broken very expensive dishwasher which I cant afford to fix.
I could really do without this :(

Even if they didn't receive the warranty card you would have thought that if they knew it was only made in Nov 06 then they would do something about it

Not sure if you have an legal ground here but I'd at least make a complaint to head office.

Have you got some other form of proof of when you bought it? Original receipt, credit card, for instance?

I had a Smeg cooker which went wriong several times, and every tie was a huge faff and expense to fix because the generic parts weren't compatible and Smeg parts had to come from Italy.

Its madness!!

Under the sale of goods act I think electrical goods should last for 6 years. I can't remember the details, but I got HHS to replace my hair straighteners that broke by quoting this act at them. If you google it you might find more details.

I've had similar with Zanussi, had a broken dishwasher, I'd never sent the warrenty form off so was expecting an arguement. But apparantly they could tell from the serial number when it was sold. Admitedly mine caught fire and was a known fault so that probably helped but there was an engineer out the next day. But if Zanussi can tell from the serial number then Smeg should be able to.

Sales of goods act 1979 states that goods have to be fit for purpose. Your machine obviously isnt anymore.

Surely goods are covered under their warranty whether you send a "card" back or not???

My friends GHD's broke after 13 months. She couldn't find the receipt and never sent off the warranty card. She phoned them up and they asked her to quote the serial number off the straightners and took them back to repair them. When they couldn't they sent her a brand new pair.
They only had a 2 year warranty, but said they could check just off the serial number. SMEG should be able to do the same, just depends if they want to be arsey about it!
Threatening Watchdog is always a good fall back option!

Contact Consumer Direct - government funded consumer organisation. They give free advice and I found them invaluable when my computer broke down 3 years after buying and I was told by the company I bought it from that I wasn't entitled to a repair. Legally I was though and it comes under Sales of Goods Act. I am sure you will also be entitled to repair or replacement. But you need to approach the company you bought from in the first instance, not the manufacturer.

Consumer Direct will talk you through what you need to do, will hold your hand through the whole [sometimes longwinded] process. Were fantastic, highly recommend them.
