to want the free gift too?

My MIL very kindly asked what I would like for my birthday last month. They are a lovely sort but get in a bit of a tizz if you don't tell them exactly what to buy you. Please don't think I'm a grabbing sort by stipulating exactly what they should get - they get quite cross and pouty if you say "I don't know" or "nothing much" or "just a box of chocs will do".

I asked for a magazine subscription to a particular magazine that is around the price they would usually spend. I tore out a page from the mag with details of how to subscribe for MIL - so I know there was a free gift with every subscription, over £40 worth of beauty products IIRC.

I got a card from the magazine people saying that I would be receiving my first copy in November. I wondered about the gift then, and thought it may come with the first mag - it hasn't.

Now - I know I shouldn't EXPECT anything for my birthday, be grateful for my gift etc but if they were happy to get the subscription, do you think I or they should get the free gift, which is an incentive to subscribe, after all.

Wondering where my bubble bath is, AIBU?

Hmmm, not sure.

However, if you want it, how about a message to the MIL enthusing about the subscription and how you are excitedly waiting for the bubble bath?

BoysAreLikeDogs · 10/11/2010 17:57

yabu

BusyMissIzzy · 10/11/2010 17:58

She paid for the subscription, so technically the gift is hers. I think.

Lulumaam · 10/11/2010 17:58

some of these gifts with subscriptions are onl for the first X amount of subscribers, so maybe not everyone got one>

if not, do as skiing gardner suggested

Firawla · 10/11/2010 17:58

i think yabu if you were that desperate for the free gift subscribe urself

scaryjane · 10/11/2010 17:59

want to know if AIBU before I decide whether to ask her :)

You will probably get the beauty products for your Christmas present. Grin

scaryjane · 10/11/2010 18:02

Grin mollymax, maybe.

JingleTits · 10/11/2010 18:02

I think id keep it if id spent the same amount of money i usually would and see it as a bonus lol

I think you should have made a comment when you asked for it about the free gift like " pluss i get a free gift too" Grin

then she would have felt obliged to pass that onto you too

ZombiePlan · 10/11/2010 18:04

Well, AFAIK the gift would automatically go to the person paying the subscription, so I expect it will have been sent to MIL. Maybe she has got it and feels awkward giving you something that is a free gift (might she be worried you'll think she's being cheap giving away something she hasn't paid for)? Or maybe its her fave brand of toiletries and she is currently luxuriating in a bath full of the stuff? Either way, won't it be a bit embarrassing for you to ask her for it?

scaryjane · 10/11/2010 18:04

Good points BusyMissIzzy and JingleTits

Hulababy · 10/11/2010 18:05

Did the subscription come direct to your house? But the gift hasn't?

I would ask the PILs just make sure it has actually arrived somewhere. But I think you have to ask carefully and not make it sound like you are saying they should be yours, incase they have received them and decided tokeep them.

I personally would normally pass the free gift on to the person ordering, but it may depend on what it was I guess.

HowToShoutSoHusbandsWillListen · 10/11/2010 18:05

Yep, YABU. Sorry Smile

KaraStarbuckThrace · 10/11/2010 18:06

Could well be the free gift was subject to stock.

tutu100 · 10/11/2010 18:06

Sometimes the free gift with magazine subscriptions doesn't arrived for several weeks after the magazine.

FantasticFox · 10/11/2010 18:07

lulumaam makes a good point.

RJRabbit · 10/11/2010 18:07

I don't think they send the free gifts with gift subscriptions - but you could contact the magazine and say you didn't receive it and see what they say.

scaryjane · 10/11/2010 18:08

Well, that's another thing - she's not a 'beauty products' kind of girl. Maybe I will get them for crimbo - I'll be happy with that, it was nice organicy stuff that I wouldn't usually be able to splash out on.

scaryjane · 10/11/2010 18:11

The copy of the mag I have here says 'all new subscribers will receive . . .' so not the first x, or excluding gift subscriptions

OP posts:
MistyB · 10/11/2010 18:12

I've purchased a subscription for a friend before and the free gift did come to me, not her. I know I was certaintly tempted to keep it and I'm pretty sure I did!!

ChippingIn · 10/11/2010 18:17

Why not ring up the Mag and ask if they have been sent out... if they've sent it to MIL - tell them how disappointed you are and they'll probably send you a set too Grin

scaryjane · 10/11/2010 18:20

I might ring the mag! Then no embarrassment for MIL if she has kept it. Good idea! Also fingers crossed they'll send one to me too. I could send them an email " I haven't yet received the free gift"

OP posts:
ChoccieDoodleyAdventCalender · 10/11/2010 18:21

OP you have just reminded me, my mil also bought me a mag subscription for my birthday and told me to expect the free gift that came with subscribing as that is what they had told her (Grazia btw!). Never got it but know mil would have told me if she had got it and sent it on to me as she had told me all about it iyswim.

upahill · 10/11/2010 18:22

I agree with ZombiePlan tbh.

upahill · 10/11/2010 18:23

Also I have a sneaky suspicion if I had been in MIL position and got the gift I can't put my hand on heart and say I would defintly hand it over if it was something nice.
I would probably think - everyones a winner here, DIL has got what she wants and I've got some nice smellies!!
