I saw this same t-shirt in a shop in town and was really f*cked off!!!

Well sex workers might be offended at the assumption that all sex workers are single mums.

cupcakesandbunting · 08/11/2010 16:35

Oh and I can see where the offence is meant to be but it just ain't touching that nerve. Soz.

HerBeatitude · 08/11/2010 16:38

It doesn't matter if you're offended or not, it's offensive anyway. I think whoever said it's a useful way to spot a twat you wouldn't go to bed with is right, but it is horrible that someone would want to go around with a t-shirt which insults a quarter of mothers in this country.

And sex workers have no right to feel offended by being linked with widows and other single mothers.

ThatllDoPig · 08/11/2010 16:40

The only good thing about it is that you don't have to talk to the person wearing it to wait to find out that they are a total dickhead.

Tidey · 08/11/2010 16:40

It's tacky, overpriced and shit.

cupcakesandbunting · 08/11/2010 16:41

It's only offensive if you find it offensive and not everyone does. Fair enough I'd give a bloke wearing one a wide berth but I wouldn't be simply outraged at it.

HerBeatitude · 08/11/2010 16:45

I don't think the T-shirt is simply outrageous.

I do think it's simply outrageous to talk about a quarter of all mothers in this country as if they are lowlife.

Chil1234 · 08/11/2010 16:45

Single mums aren't associated with sex work. (Not even in the Daily Mail) There are plenty of groups that do have an offensive stereotype e.g. the 'careful with the money' Scot, the 'not so careful with other people's property' Scouser etc. And a good offensive joke plays on the stereotype and gets a laugh in spite of your PC intentions. That's the main problem with the t-shirt. Not that it's offensive but more that it's a rubbish joke to start with.

HerBeatitude · 08/11/2010 16:46

It's a mysogynist joke.

It's trying to suggest a connection that isn't there.

TorcherQueenie · 08/11/2010 16:49

Psh, its not as bad as they can be. There is one I rather love though under offensive "All Fur coat and No Knickers" I'm sure I'm not going to be the only MN'er who'd wear it Grin

HerBeatitude · 08/11/2010 16:53

Oh I love the phrase all fur coat and no knickers.

Just one day, I would like to be that woman... Grin

ForMashGetSmash · 08/11/2010 16:56

Why didn't you go in and give the shop manager what for?

earwicga · 08/11/2010 17:01

How lovely. And it's available for men and women. Even more lovely.

It's nice that wankers can wear t-shirts to signal their presence tbh.

(I laughed at the Morning Wood one though)

Librashavinganotherbiscuit · 08/11/2010 17:04

"I do think it's simply outrageous to talk about a quarter of all mothers in this country as if they are lowlife."

erm are you calling sex workers lowlife? that is just as an offensive statement as the t-shirt itself....

SparklingExplosionGoldBrass · 08/11/2010 17:06

Quite, Libra.

Unrulysun · 08/11/2010 17:13

...and in the competitive non-judging event this week a frankly impossible photo finish...

HerBeatitude · 08/11/2010 17:37

Oh FFS, whoever wears a t-shirt like this, isn't full of respect for the rights of sex workers. They think they're low lives, they think single mothers are low lives and they think all women are low lives basically.

But they'll talk bollocks about how empowering they think pole dancing is for women, and how all women should be allowed to be prostitutes if they want. (Naturally)

Now's probably not the thread to go into the ins and outs of prostitution however.

HerBeatitude · 08/11/2010 17:44

Oh I've jsut realised you think I'm calling sex workers low lives. I'm not you idiots, I'm saying that men who wear t-shirts like this think they're low lives. And they equate single mothers with low life as well. Because they are mysogynist, it's a deeply mysogynist sentiment.

HerBeatitude · 08/11/2010 17:47

Sorry I shouldn't call you idiots, I'm just so cross at the pretence that this is not offensive.

It is all about women being sex objects and it's presented as a larf. It doesn't really matter which women they pick - pole dancers, single mothers, lap dancers, sex workers, call centre girls, nurses, Theresa May - it comes from a place which is really horrible and I suppose it pissed me off that there seems to be a denial about that.

I should probably fuck off of this thread, I am obviously too irate about it.

HerBeatitude · 08/11/2010 17:48

You're not idiots btw that apology sounded a bit half hearted reading it back. Grin

Librashavinganotherbiscuit · 08/11/2010 17:48

Herbeatitude your post implied you thought sex workers were lowlife....

earwicga · 08/11/2010 17:49

HB doesn't think that Libra.

And we're all idiots sometimes HB :)

Librashavinganotherbiscuit · 08/11/2010 17:49

sorry x posted am breastfeeding so typing one handed and rather slow!!!

I actually agree with everything you are saying.

HerBeatitude · 08/11/2010 17:58

Tryign to be coherent through the fog of fury - for a certain type of man, a sex worker or pole dancer is the ultimate "bad woman". So choosing that particular bad woman to equate single parents with, is a calculated insult to lone parents.

Recognising that insult, doesn't mean you agree with where they are coming from, but I can see why my post implied that i accept the premise, so sorry for being incoherent with annoyance.

Vallhala · 08/11/2010 18:04

This lone mother would think "Wanker!" if she saw a man wearing that t-shirt.

Unfortunately for said man, this lone mother has a big mouth and would loudly say "Wanker!" too. :o

I did like the "Caution - John Terry" one on the same site though! :o
