tis ok - it is a ridiculous story and it's hard to resist laughing at it. After all, someone, somewhere, elected these morons

ApocalypseCheese · 07/11/2010 19:16

I know years ago the government used to hand out tins of stewing steak (my ex mils friend used to give it to her for the dog) think they also handed out toilet roll and vitamins etc have always been available, so it's not a new thing. Bloody degrading tho, much as I like cheese. Surely sorting out the economy so people can buy their own bloody cheese would be more effective ?? Sad for the people in that situation.

woopsidaisy · 07/11/2010 19:16

Here.

berryfreeze · 07/11/2010 19:20

sorry can't get link up for some reason

it is very silly, apparantly the cheese is being paid for by our European colleagues who think that we are on the brink of starvation!!!as quoted in one of the Irish papers today

canyou · 07/11/2010 19:21

Cheese Riven because of the EU dairy mountain, it keeps, it will keep dairy farmers productive it is easy to transport.
Bread is going to get expensive because of crop failures

canyou · 07/11/2010 19:24

Oh yeah and put cheese with beans and a potato make a complete food from a food nutrition pt of view

Decorhate · 07/11/2010 19:28

I used to make a great cheese, bean & potato pie when I was a student!

turkeyboots · 07/11/2010 19:31

For non-Irish people. Seen Anglea's Ashes? The bit where the mother goes off to the charity and gets questioned about her coat? Same charity is handing out cheese paid for by the government with EU hardship funds.

GeruptaSingh · 07/11/2010 19:36

nothing wrong with cheese for Christmas. Last year I got a nice cheese board and it was yummy

I personally send SVP away from my door empty handed as they leave a lot to desired in the way they decide who to help, I have seen a man turned away when he was destitute, 2 small kids, no income [self employed building trade so no social welfare payment] who sold every thing they could to pay off business debts, this man came to me in tears as he had no money to get food for his children, never mind bills

Iwishiwasalive · 07/11/2010 19:58

I've been pissed off with SVP for years. They seem to help a lot of people who definitely do not need help.

A bit of cheese given to people who need it is fine but the state of the economy is laughable.

sue52 · 07/11/2010 20:05

Don't tell Dave. He might use get ideas and use cheese to replace child benefit.

canyou · 07/11/2010 20:10

Sue we can give him plenty of more ludicrous ideas other then the cheese,
But I kind of like the charity idea he has but only if handled properly, I always gave back with charity work when unemployed and anything that gives people a sense of purpose and community is good also it can be used to network, but it must be implemented properly and not cost jobs

ChippingIn · 07/11/2010 20:12

Maybe the politicians should be paid in cheese.... see if they still think it's a bonny idea!

wukter · 07/11/2010 20:18

The economy stinks, and the governments attempts at qualitative cheesing will only deepen the hole, That said, somethings gouda be done, they're edamned if they do and edamned if they don't.

(Sorry heard nothing but cheese puns all weekend, so collected a few here for your delights)

Iwish & Canyou, I have never heard that about SVP. Only how great they are etc. Have you any links?

Ormirian · 07/11/2010 20:20

Is it Irish cheddar?

Wukter no links only personal experience from volunteering at the local MAB's office. it is so sad we are managing just and lucky that DP can get over time with Christmas coming but the situations some people are in are awful

stleger · 07/11/2010 20:25

It looks like blocks of industrial cheese, not something delicious. Having spent yesterday morning in a supermarket in Cork, with staff wearing 'supporting local people and Irish jobs' tshirts, and trying to but local apples - I'd be surprised if it is Irish cheese.

wukter · 07/11/2010 20:25

Do you have to meet certain criteria to be helped by SVP? I always give them a bit coming up to Christmas, hate to think they're passing judgement on people who need their help.

canyou · 07/11/2010 20:25

Madam it is Irish cheese to help the farmers/cheese makers the State will buy it from them and give to the charity,
Wonder what the EU think of it esp as we are not allowed a buy Irish campaign

BarbieLovesKen · 07/11/2010 20:29
