to complain about Peter Kay's 'Autism' joke ?

BBC One show last night, Peter Kay enters studio flanked by a couple of Children in Need 'Pudseys'. Peter Kay falls prone on floor & flails arms etc. Jokes he is 'autistic'. Laughter.

Not on iplayer, been cut. Very offensive so not surprised.

Is he that dense that he can't see it as unreasonable to get a cheap laugh from those with a condition that benefit in many ways from financial aid supplied by Children in Need?

Google throws up he often jokes at expense of those who are Autistic.
But on a show with Pudsey?

I think it not unreasonable to not only complain to the BBC but also wish a child with autism on him & his wife, maybe he would be less insulting.

OMG seriously? I can't stand the guy so wouldn't have watched it the first time around or on iPlayer, but I can't believe that!

Definitely complain. I can't believe he is allowed to get away with this on a regular basis.

huddspur · 06/11/2010 11:28

Thats comedy for you

Hedgeblunder · 06/11/2010 11:28

Complain. Definitly.
He's lost it now, he's a washed up one hit wonder who'll do anything for a laugh- icant believe the crew laughed along. Fuckers.
And yabu to wish an autistic child on them- it would be grossly unfair on the child (but you know that already)

MaMoTTaT · 06/11/2010 11:29

yes sounds hilarious huddspur Hmm

5DollarShake · 06/11/2010 11:29

Wow - what was he thinking??

I don't even get the joke. Hmm

thelunar66 · 06/11/2010 11:29

I don't expect he got many laughs Sad

FiaGrace · 06/11/2010 11:32

what an idiot

byrel · 06/11/2010 11:32

Thats the genre of comedy that he performs so in a way YABU as comedians like Kay,Boyle,Carr go out to be offensive and controversial.

aristomache · 06/11/2010 11:32

agree with huddspur some of the funniest comedy is definitley a no-no, shock comedy is probably the funniest.

I have an autistic son and we joke about it all the time, laughter being the best medicine and all - don't know how we'd cope if we didn't laugh.

BUT!! I don't think I'd find it so funny if someone who didn't know him and love him joked about it.

Am not in favour of censorship though, so I guess I don't know where I stand on this.

and that's my very useful contribution Grin

Hedgeblunder · 06/11/2010 11:32

Worth a complaint to m&s too I wonder?
He's their new poster boy isn't he?

BaggyCoconut · 06/11/2010 11:32

huddspur - actually IMO comedy is making a funny joke/situation etc. Drooping to floor, flailing your arms, saying "I'm autistic" is just taking the piss out of people who have not choice about their condition.

Hedgeblunder · 06/11/2010 11:37

Agree with baggy- it's not right -and also not an accurate representation of austistic people, it's just 'acting mental' which is just plain offensive

forevervacuuming · 06/11/2010 11:37

Has anyone got a link? Was it out of the blue or in context to a wider joke? (not that I can think of any context it would be appropriate in!)

Hedgeblunder · 06/11/2010 11:38

It's been cut forever- has been editted out on iplayer

huddspur · 06/11/2010 11:40

I'm not saying it was funny, I don't think it was but you've got to accept that dark/shock comedy is going to be offensive to some people

MaMoTTaT · 06/11/2010 11:45

\link{http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00vr62j/The_One_Show_05_11_2010\here} at about 2.40 he says somehting about autism but I can't make it out

forevervacuuming · 06/11/2010 11:49

"Show that VT (videotape) about autism"
Yep, I'm going to put a complaint in - go here if you wish to join me!

vjg13 · 06/11/2010 11:49

Follow the links on the bbc website to make a complaint.

OhBloodyNorah · 06/11/2010 11:49

I'm really surprised at how he's turned out

we were watching those old "Peter Kay Thing"s he did for C4 years ago the other night

they were still fabulous. Mature, well observed, and funny as fuck

I dunno what's happened to him these days. Think he got too rich and too successful much too quick and now he can't do the stuff he's really good at because everyone wants him to say "garlic bread???"

vixel · 06/11/2010 11:54

"Show that VT (videotape) about autism"

That was what he said, can't say its in the top 100 most offensive things I've ever heard. Bit of an overreaction here.

MaMoTTaT · 06/11/2010 11:55

vixel - that's obviously a different bit then.

The rest of what he's doing doesn't tie in to what the OP said - as she said he was on the floor

SpringHeeledJack · 06/11/2010 12:00

ooh I had a look

but I don't think he meant anything by it- did he?

I read it as "cut to the vt- slightly inappropriately- about a serious issue"- which is something that always jars on that sort of show

detoxdiva · 06/11/2010 12:02

I saw the show last night and have just watched it again on the link.

As I recall it Peter Kay didn't fall on the floor as he entered the studio and make a comment about autism...it was later on when Chris and Alex were pretending to 'stretch' Kay after Chris's question about whether he does stretches or exercises before a show. They were physically stretching him on the sofa when he said 'run that vt about autism'.

My interpretation wasn't that he was being offensive, but just bringing the bit where he was being pulled about to an end, and just happened to chose the subject matter of autism to refer to a fictional vt about.

I wasn't offended by the comment and unless I have missed a more serious comment, think this has been misinterpreted into something it was never meant to be?

detoxdiva · 06/11/2010 12:03

Sorry x-postwith vixel and spring

Nancy66 · 06/11/2010 12:08
