Is it self indulgent to want a new shower ?

We have had our shower for 12 years. The tiles have been loose for a long time and I think the wall behind must be wet as we have black spot mould, which is a sign of damp. There has also been a slow leak for years which appears on the ceiling of the living room below. The shower door does not fit, the handle has broken off and the paint work all around the cubicle is brown and flaking off. All on all it looks nasty and very dated. I have tried several times over the years to patch things up. I got someone to replace a wood panel underneath which was rotting and have reapainted the damp areas many times to make it look better. However, I really think it's time to replace it all. I got two quotes to do this. However, my DH has told me that to do so would be self indulgent. He earns a LARGE salary and I am not earning at all at the moment. I think we need to get this fixed. AIBU ?

Do it. Once your DH is showering in a gorgeous natural stone looking water tight steamy hot power shower with underfloor heating and big fluffy towels this winter, he will eat his words.

It may be slightly self indulgent - it sounds as if it is becoming a necessity, but what's wrong with being a little self indulgent if you have the money? It will make your house start to smell damp and old, and you will feel like leaping out of bed in the morning and getting in there if you have it refurbished.

Any way you can "force" his hand - my DH is a sucker for holidays, he loves going away places, and whenever there is something that I think needs doing that he is reluctant I say "oh well I guess you are right, lets not spend the money, and if we can't spend it on this, we better not go on holiday this year" which always resolves the situation soon enough Grin

If the tiles are coming off the damp will be wrecking other bits of your house. My mum's house ended up losing the downstairs ceiling in parts over a leaking shower tray and the survey on the house we're buying has picked up damp in an adjoining bedroom from a slight leak in the shower tiling on the other side.

Plus a really stonkingly nice shower makes getting up in the morning much much less painful. Best bit about going to a posh hotel is a really really blow yer head off awesome shower.

We're going to have to do ours soon after we move in - I can live with the avocado bathroom suite (wait long enough it'll be back in fashion), but some muppet's fixed the top of the shower head adjuster for a 5 foot 6 person.... hubby's over a foot taller so he's never going to be able to wash his hair!

YANBU but your mistake was to ask his opinion. Get the work done and give him the bill :)

Francagoestohollywood · 05/11/2010 14:19

YANBU at all. Tell him it'll help the economy.

The leak in the one in the house we're buying, and the damp from it actually knocked a bit off the valuation survey by the way - might shake him up a bit.

Francagoestohollywood · 05/11/2010 14:21

Why having things that work is "self indulgent"?

earwicga · 05/11/2010 14:28

It's the age of austerity Franca - apparently any kind of pleasure is now selfish.

TheBolter · 05/11/2010 14:34

YANBU. You can't overestimate a good shower! I have two showers with those girt six inch drench heads. Until we had them I had no idea what a 'proper' shower felt like. You feel so clean afterwards it's unreal. Couldn't go back to regularly using a crap shower now.

TattyDevine · 05/11/2010 18:10

The in-laws shower is so inadequate - it has about 7 strands of water come out of it.

I can piss faster.

You dont feel clean after a shower there...just greasier, somehow...
