...to beg for the help of the techie-minded!

I'm techie-minded myself, but this has got me stumped.

I am trying to save a copy of this news report on ITV.com which plays in their ITVplayer. I tried to record it through my Freeview receiver when it was broadcast, but my bloody Freeview picks up the wrong local news.

I've tried the obvious - right clicking on the video and trying to save, but because it's a Flash application, 'Save' is not an option - only options are to alter Flash settings.

Westcountry news has no facility to provide copies of news items to the public - it's not that they just don't want to, they are unable to. They are, however, calling the reporter to see if she has a copy.

Please help me oh wise Mumsnetters!!

Install a screen recorder. Good suggestions here:

If you are using the Firefox browser, look under 'Add-ons' for something called Download Helper. You'll need to install it, but it will then let you download Flash videos from itv Player, or youtube etc.

There's bound to be something similar for Chrome, too. Don't know about IE.

ARGH! Thanks for the suggestions. I've tried the advice on the website on screen recorders, but it's really low quality video. I've also installed Firefox and Download helper, but it will only let me record the adverts before and after the news item, not the item itself :(

Ah, sorry Galena, I've just had a look at ITV player and it must have some copy protection or something on there.

Galena · 05/11/2010 12:50

That's ok, thanks anyway. sigh Hopefully the reporter will have a copy.

Have just tried it with Steam Transport (link) and it worked. The latest download version doesn't work with ITV but I used the one called 'streamtransportsetup1021559' and it worked perfectly!

It downloads the .flv file (opens in Adobe Media Player, or there will be countless file converters out there if you don't have that!).

m0nkeynuts · 05/11/2010 14:25

That would be Stream Transport, not Steam Transport Hmm

Galena · 05/11/2010 16:15

Oh, superb, thanks M0nkey - will try that in a mo!

Like the thought of Steam transport though - trains chuffchuffing through my laptop!
