To think that these parents are a bit mad?

I know a family who have 3 dc's. All the children have strange embarrassing names, including one name that is a favourite for pet cats!
The children are not vaccinated and are very strict vegetarians. No meat, no fish no gelatine. But it doesn't end there. They are Also not allowed any raisins, sweets, chocolate etc basically anything with sugar.
I once saw ds1 hiding in a corner eating a jelly baby at nursery. Their ds1 also will not eat veg, so he is basically a vegetarian who will not eat veg and so eats nothing really. His parents will not alter his diet.
The youngest ds has seizures that the doc says he will grow out of. Doc says it may be a nutrition deficiency, but mum and dad will not alter his diet either. Ds1 has speech difficulties, but mum and dad are not worried.
At nursery ds1 and ds2 cannot have yogurt with the other children, only melon and apple.
Ds1 has told me that mum eats crisps and dad eats chocolate but the dc's have none.
It's none of my business but am I being unreadable to think this is a bit mad?

YABU: There's nothing wrong with calling your child Mog. I wish I'd thought of it.
Biscuit on the rest though.

coatgate · 04/11/2010 20:26

I like the name Felix...

mrsmindcontrol · 04/11/2010 20:27

what is this strange embarrassing name you refer to? I think it may be the same as my DS1's name. On that basis alone YABU. And a bit ridiculous.

You seem to have a problem with them being vegetarian. There is nothing wrong with a vegetarian diet.

If the children don't eat vegetables that's a problem, but that would be a problem regardless of whether they ate meat or not.

Many people try to avoid their children having sweets.

As for the names, ofc you are being unreasonable.

sungirltan · 04/11/2010 20:28

yikes - the ds name isn't also used to label lady bits is it? quite alarmed!

SarahJim · 04/11/2010 20:29

Hang on Madam, Binka's not bad. Kinda 'exotic'

BlueFergie · 04/11/2010 20:29

What do you mean by very strict vegetarians because no meat. no fish, no gelatine is not very strict it is just vegetarianism. No yogurts suggests that they are actually vegans though? One of my good friends is a vegan and her kids are vegetarians she is the most nutritionally aware person I know. They have a more varied diet than my kids.
DS1 must eat something otherwise he would be dead. Pleanty of kids don't eat veg, I don't think the deficency in their diet is made up entirely by meat (at least I hope not that would be very unhealthy). There are other foods beside meat and veg.
Not allowing sugar seems very normal from what I read on MN.
The only thing slightly odd here is the fact that the doc suggests that a nutritional deficency may be causing seizures and they have not looked into it. Are you sure about this? I have never heard of lack of meat cauing seizures.
As for the parents eating things the kids don't - we all do that don't we?

mrsmindcontrol · 04/11/2010 20:29

thanks Kathy- me too Wink

Skyrg · 04/11/2010 20:29

Also, you said 'The children are not vaccinated and are very strict vegetarians. No meat, no fish no gelatine. '

That's not strict vegetarianism, it's just vegetarianism! Vegetarians do not eat fish or meat. At all.

CakeCuresAll · 04/11/2010 20:30

Firstly, DC say all sorts of things and you have no proof to back up this little boys claims.

Secondly, Vegetarians do not only eat vegetables He could have a healthy diet containing pulses, grains, fruit etc...

My ds is a vegetarian but I'm pretty certain if he got hold of a jellybaby he'd eat it too. He doesn't understand why we don't eat these things and that child might not either...

YABU imo
