To think that these parents are a bit mad?

I know a family who have 3 dc's. All the children have strange embarrassing names, including one name that is a favourite for pet cats!
The children are not vaccinated and are very strict vegetarians. No meat, no fish no gelatine. But it doesn't end there. They are Also not allowed any raisins, sweets, chocolate etc basically anything with sugar.
I once saw ds1 hiding in a corner eating a jelly baby at nursery. Their ds1 also will not eat veg, so he is basically a vegetarian who will not eat veg and so eats nothing really. His parents will not alter his diet.
The youngest ds has seizures that the doc says he will grow out of. Doc says it may be a nutrition deficiency, but mum and dad will not alter his diet either. Ds1 has speech difficulties, but mum and dad are not worried.
At nursery ds1 and ds2 cannot have yogurt with the other children, only melon and apple.
Ds1 has told me that mum eats crisps and dad eats chocolate but the dc's have none.
It's none of my business but am I being unreadable to think this is a bit mad?

Didgeridoo, I've never taken supplements nor do my vegetarian DDs. We don't need them because we eat a balanced diet.
OP, you don't really like the family do you?

earwicga · 05/11/2010 00:18

Ha ha ha! YABU.

Must remember to start taking suplements. Can't believe that I forgot to take them in all the years I've been vegy. Can't believe that me and my very healthy vegy children are still alive really.

WassaAxolotl · 05/11/2010 01:16

How does you know the doctor says the child has a nutritional deficiency? What happened to medical confidentiality?

WassaAxolotl · 05/11/2010 01:16

*do, sorry, folks.

ClimberChick · 05/11/2010 02:06

Oh dear I better take my sorry vegan arse to the health store to get some supplements (not DD though as she's gets vegan breast milk)

didgeridoo · 05/11/2010 06:58

Narkypuffin - I said all the vegetarians I KNOW. As I don't know everyone who's a vegetarian I can't speak for them all.

TandB · 05/11/2010 08:28

I'm a vegetarian - I don't take supplements.

[looks smug at slipping a bit of prime anecdotal evidence into the discussion]

Although on the subject of "strict" vegetarianism, I could probably argue that I am not a strict vegetarian. I ate very little meat and no fish as a child and stopped altogether about 21 years ago - I never liked eating it and it started making me quite sick for some reason. However, I am not strict in that I don't check whether things contain gelatin etc. I just don't eat any sort of meat or fish.

Not defending the OP, by the way - I think the thread title should have been - "AIBU to not like these people?"

Bloodymary · 05/11/2010 09:37

YABU.
I know of a family with similar beliefs.
The children have Tibetan names(which I happen to like).
They are strict vegans.
They have no vaccinations, and do not go to the doctors. Any illness is treated by herbs.
The DC are home educated.
Oh and for good measure the girls and the boys have beautiful, really long hair.
They are a happy healthy family.

didgeridoo you are way off the mark

a good, varied vegetarian or even vegan diet can provide a child or adult with everything they need

i recently had a paed appt to talk about ds2. we are vegetarian, but he is intolerant to dairy and egg, so basically vegan.

she said his diet was fabulous, and better than most meat-eating children she had seen thus far

i think it is true to say that the vast majority of veggie/vegan parents are very, VERY aware of making sure their children get a good, balanced diet and therefore ensure adequate nutrition

the same cannot be said of all meat-eating families who presume that because they eat meat they couldn't possibly be lacking in anything at all Hmm

thisisyesterday · 05/11/2010 10:31

and aren't the japanese one of the healthiest nations in the world?

don't see much dairy in their diet..

thisisyesterday · 05/11/2010 10:31

oh yeh, and none of us take supplements and never have. nor has it ever been suggested by any HCP that we should

memoo · 05/11/2010 10:36

When my DS was in nursery we got a letter saying the sppech therapist thought he had a sppech problem and needed therapy.

I though it was rubbish, he was 3 fgs! So I declined the therapy.

He is 9 now and speaks perfectly, in fact he never stops talking!! Lots of 3 year olds have problems with their speech in one way or anther.

StrawberryTot · 05/11/2010 10:51

im a veggie and i have to agree that not all vegetarians need to take supplements, the only time i had to was when i was pregnant. however i will admit that i am against making children vegetarians, i think depriving a child of certain foods (unless allergic) whilst they are growing can not be good for them both my little ones are brought up on a very meaty diet :o not to mention i hate the idea that because im a veggie my children should be, erm no its a choice i made and one they can make for themselves when they are older.

My dog is called flora, i really wish we hadn't called her that because when I had DD last year I wanted to name her flora too

earwicga · 05/11/2010 12:40

StrawberryTot - there is no problem with bringing up children as vegetarians. It's a shame you didn't have the convictions of your beliefs. My children have choice and they choose to remain vegy.

CakeCuresAll · 05/11/2010 13:12

Strawberry - why are you vegetarian? Just out of interest really.

I am for equally health / ethical reasons. My children are veggie becasue I am make a fact-based health choice about their diet - I have also taken away their choice to smoke or drink for health reasons. As a parent, I feel I have the responsibility to protect them from what I'd consider as harmful to their health until they are mature enough to take on that responsibility themselves.

I'm sure it wouldn't be such an issue if I simply said I restricted fruit shoots and sausage rolls.....

CakeCuresAll · 05/11/2010 13:13

oh and my brothers cat is called Bob.

I know someone with a cat called Dave too.

ShirleyGunpowderPlot · 05/11/2010 13:17

Actual Guffaw at MadameDeath, hatwoman and Reality

My cat is called Po. Stupid rescue cat.

suwoo · 05/11/2010 13:18

I'm another vegetarian who doesn't take supplements. No meat has passed my lips for 23 years and I eat very well thank you.

My DC's were weaned veggie, but they eat meat now they are old enough to request it.

My older boy has long hair. My younger boy, Felix has no hair (to speak of) as yet, but his too will be long and curly.

Can I be he first to say to the OP....

Off you fuck, love.

PlentyOfPockets · 05/11/2010 13:33

I had a cat called Yucky Squitters once.
