You can't quote anyone's posts properly on this forum? Hmm

OP posts:
nickytwotimes · 02/11/2010 10:27

just copy and paste and stick quotation marks round.

Sarsaparilllla: "You can't quote anyone's posts properly on this forum?"
What do you mean by 'properly'?

TrillianAstra · 02/11/2010 10:28

Maybe you can't... I think Paisley just quoted you very neatly there.

Sarsaparilllla · 02/11/2010 10:30

Yeah, course you can copy/paste but it's a bit of a hassle - on the vast majority of forums they have a button you press that puts it into a quote for you.

Just seemed a litte odd given how many people seem to use this forum that it's not go a more up to date set up.

Fernie3 · 02/11/2010 10:34

I don't care about quotes an edit button would be nice as i am really bad at both spelling and typing! But it's doesn't bother me that much as long as people get the meaning of what i am saying

thisisyesterday · 02/11/2010 10:35

well we've lived without it for this long!

TrillianAstra · 02/11/2010 10:40

there's a difference between being 'not up to date' (in fact MN has hd a number of updates recently) and choosing to not have a certain feature.

Have you seen how a quote function gets used?

You have to scroll down for ages while someone quotes a post, possibly quotes a post that already has a quote in it, and at the end they say 'I agree'.

PaisleyLeaf · 02/11/2010 10:41

I've seen forums where they have that quoting thing you say about. Many people seem to quote the whole post and it often happens repeatedly.
It makes for quite a stilted conversation.
At least with C&P chances are you'll only do the bit you need.

PaisleyLeaf · 02/11/2010 10:42

Yes Trill: "I agree" or worse.....just an animated smiley
'Good post' 'arrow' 'up'

Sarsaparilllla · 02/11/2010 10:47

Yep, Fernie an edit button would be useful too :)

I've seen a lot of forums that have an quote function that automatically cuts down the number of quotes included, so you don't get as much repetition.

I do know what you mean where people just quote everything and say 'I agree', which can be a bit annoying but doesn't happen continuously.

It was just a comment as tbh I've never come accross a forum with no standard quote function at all.

DanceInTheDark don't reply then, nobody forced you! Confused

OP posts:
TrillianAstra · 02/11/2010 10:56

Edit button would not be good.

gorionSPARKLERS · 02/11/2010 11:00

I think the problem with a "quote button" is that it would copy the entire post enen though iy is probably just a few words or a sentence you want to quote.

jonesy71 · 02/11/2010 11:16

Stick to C&P - keep it simple I say, I think the quoting thing just clutters up the place and sometime makes it difficult to see who said what.

And please don't start putting those silly tickers everywhere, that's one of the main reasons i don't go near the 'other one'

fluffy sparkly flower fairies "2 days, 3 mins since my precious one did her first poo on the potty" fluffy sparkly flower fairies

Sarsaparilllla · 02/11/2010 11:23

With a quote function you can edit the quote down to the part you want, so you don't have to include the entire post - and it would automatically include who had said it, so it makes things easier to follow than c&p I think.

What are tickers??

OP posts:
TrillianAstra · 02/11/2010 11:30

We know what you can do with a quote function, what we are discussing is what people would do.

We don't want it.

jonesy71 · 02/11/2010 11:34

Tickers are these timers at the bottom of some people posts (like a signature) which count down and are surrounded by flowers and fairies, and sometimes even moving sparkles. They'll say stuff like "3years, 2days, 5hours since little one came into this world"

or

"i'm in my 3rd trimester, it's 3days, 2hours until i'm due to meet my new one"

i've even seen really disturbing ones, which I can't imagine why anyone would want to be reminded about every time they post, but each to their own I suppose.

Pop over to the 'other side' and just have a look...

This could get quite annoying, quite quickly.
