Or am I being pathetic ? DH is at work and says he hasn't got time to drop the car back but I really don't want to make the 4 mile round trip in the dark, 2 miles of which will be with a 9 month old baby in a sling

Sorry, YABU and pathetic Grin I walked 3 miles today to pick up my DCs (I'd left the car parked near school this morning). I'd walk to school and back every day if I could but I don't think the DCs would put up with it!!

HalloweeseG · 01/11/2010 17:30

Well I wouldn't like it and I can't imagine dh taking the car and leaving me and children without transport.

MoonUnitAlpha · 01/11/2010 17:31

Unlit country roads or somewhere deserted then fair enough - but in a town or city at 6pm then YABU.

ImSpartacus · 01/11/2010 17:32

Could you not just leave DD at nursery overnight?

They will never notice....

Hulababy · 01/11/2010 17:35

Well, if I am honest, I wouldn't fancy going out for a 4 mile walk in the cold and dark right now.

That's a fair distance and time too - over an hour round trip, longer when carrying a 9 month old baby.

I'd be none too impressed with DH being honest.

But looks like you have no choice.

Francagoestohollywood · 01/11/2010 17:39

I love walking (and I don't drive), still... nothing wrong in feeling a bit lazy in a cdold autumn night...

twirlymum · 01/11/2010 17:42

Buggy? I wouldn't fancy carrying the baby all that way, but walking with a buggy is quite relaxing. And good exercise.

spiderpig8 · 01/11/2010 17:43

YANBU at all.I don't know anybody IRL who would entertain the idea of walking 4 miles on a November night in the dark to pick a kid up from nursery.get a taxi!

SixtyFootDoll · 01/11/2010 17:49

I love walking in the evening esp when people have their lights on and the curtains open Grin
Why dont you put baby in the pushchiar?

get on with it

Giddyup · 01/11/2010 17:51

I don't blame you Fibilou, not one little bit

PrettyPirate · 01/11/2010 17:56

I know the feeling not wanting to leave warm cosy home to pick up DD from nursery!! But like you said you won't be doing it regulary, so take that as a positive thing. I did similar round 3 times a week for a year, in every kind of weather (we don't have a car). Very happy for DD being at school now only 5mins from home!

cazzybabs · 01/11/2010 17:57

I would happily walk and infact do walk 5 miles with kids - I love it in the dark

cazzybabs · 01/11/2010 17:58

(BTW have a 2 month old and 3 other children)

Its a one off, its not every day, like many of us have to do. And think of a nice hot choc when you get home Grin

booyhoo · 01/11/2010 18:01

fibilou, I'm with you. i wouldn't relish the thought of that either but if needs must then make it as easy as possible. bring a buggy and a flask of hot tea and wrap up warm. leave a lamp on in the hall or front room so the house is welcoming when you get back, and make sure the heating is on for when you get in to warm you up again.

GrendelsMum · 01/11/2010 18:02

Oh, you won't mind so much when you get out - after 5 or 10 mins, you'll be wondering why you worried.

booyhoo · 01/11/2010 18:03

i also hate the dark. don't even like driving in teh dark.

irishqueen · 01/11/2010 18:03

YANBU at all, especially if dd is a straggler like my ds. Its pouring down here and I would hate to be out in it. Still have to though but I feel your pain!

HalloweeseG · 01/11/2010 18:08

Ive just had a phone call from npower asking for a meter reading and I have refused on the basis that it is cold and dark outside. So 4 miles with 2 little children would be a total nuisance.

scarylooker · 01/11/2010 18:10

I used to love doing this dropping off and picking up my oldest two in the double buggy! Though I did seem to attract really weird comments on each trip with an empty buggy - I mean it seemed quite normal to me, it wasn't like it had dolls in it like that woman in Psychoville.

I did an 8 mile walk each day for 2 years (2 miles there and then back 2 times a day). Only tried it once with a sling though - horribly sweaty!

Meglet · 01/11/2010 18:13

yanbu. Get a taxi.

FWIW I love walking. But 4 miles in the evening and the dark is going to take an hour or so.

Also depends on the paths, dog poo, crossing traffic, dodgy estates etc.

Dancergirl · 01/11/2010 18:15

Is this a one-off or a regular thing?

arses · 01/11/2010 18:18

I wonder how many of those saying you are being pathetic actually walk 2 miles with a 9 month old in a sling? I am pretty fit but it's slow going, hard on the hips, on the pelvis, on the back (I have a range of good slings like the Ergo/Beco but still..). Older babies are wriggly. It is going to be wet, cold and miserable over the winter and it's hard to keep a baby in a sling dry if it rains. Add the dark to that and it seems a bit of a nightmare to me.

She's got to do it, but it's hardly pathetic not to want to.

CoinOperatedGirl · 01/11/2010 18:18

Are you all in the artic circle with "your wrap up warm" and "cold and dark" comments, it's about 11 degrees here, pretty balmy for November 1st.
