To really want a pod coffee machine

HoneyIatethekidsdragon · 01/11/2010 15:42

even though they are tied in with Nestle Blush

I really like those Krupps and Nespresso machines. Are they overpriced gimmicks and over rated or will the pleasure I get overcome the guilt?

I will tell you my story... Are you sitting comfortably?

I really really really wanted one. I wanted a Tassimo. I had chosen my colour, sourced the cheapest one and chosen my pods. DH refused to countenance it and instead, got me a Senseo from work. I was very excited...

Three weeks later after half a cup of cold brown dribble, several flods and me shoving it out of the way every time I needed to cook anything it went back to his work. And I have never lusted after a pod coffee machine again.

There endeth my tale of woe.

HoneyIatethekidsdragon · 01/11/2010 15:50

hmmmn tales of caution and woe could save me ££££££ Grin

yet

looks longingly at promise of hot frothy coffee in minutes.

We have a Tassimo - I love it, admittedly me and DH both only drink black coffee/espresso but it works really well when one of us is away and it's not worth putting a jug on.

Folks who we make all the frothy coffee crap stuff for seem to like it as well. Plus they do hot chocolate which is a sure fire way to impress small children when they come around.

BunnyLebowski · 01/11/2010 15:56

But they don't dispense proper coffee???

Just nasty instant stuff premixed with creamer. Boke.

goodmanners · 01/11/2010 16:02

I love throthy latte in a nice glass cup with some marshmallows and i also love to fill my kids with hot chocolate . Soo yes i own a Krupps and am proud Grin. The pods are quite expensive though so we give guests mellow birds and save the good stuff for us Grin

Acekicker · 01/11/2010 16:04

BunnyLebowski - ours isn't instant premixed with creamer - basically it's pressurised (but not quite as highly as a proper espresso machine) forcing water through grounds ie it's more akin to filter/americano type coffee.

Rocky12 · 01/11/2010 16:06

Can highly highly recommned the Nespresso with milk frother. Coffee is nearly as good as Starbucks! The machine was about £180. The capsules are expensive (about 26p each and only available on mail order!). Brought from John Lewis a couple of years ago.

Also advertised by George Clooney so must be good....

Ryoko · 01/11/2010 16:08

Whats the problem with Nestle?

bran · 01/11/2010 16:12

[snurk] at coffee "nearly as good as Starbucks", I consider Starbucks to be adequate if it's in a convenient location but I wouldn't seek to re-create their slightly tasteless blend.

I bought one of these because I didn't want a big complicated coffee maker. It makes very good coffee IMO, and has a fairly small footprint on my countertop. I drink my coffee black so don't have to faff around with milk frother thingys though.

emptyshell · 01/11/2010 16:16

We've got a Krups one that looks like a skutter from Red Dwarf. It fulfils the need and stops me going to Costa - and the hot chocolate's nice when you're climbing the walls wanting a chocolate fix.

Wouldn't have bought one outright but had some spare gift vouchers after the wedding so we spoilt ourselves and, unlike many kitchen gadgets - it does get decent use.

Have a proper coffee perc as well for the mornings (it's got a timer on it) but the Skutter probably gets slightly more use to be honest.

JamieLeeCurtis · 01/11/2010 16:40

I can't bear the thought of all the wasted packaging that goes with those things - all those pods, just thrown away

muggglewump · 01/11/2010 16:45

I have a Delonghi, not the fanciest obv, but I can use any beans I like, and I have a grinder too and I love it.

Don't get a pod, as then you are tied in.

My Dad has a Senseo and though the coffee tastes ok, you can't chop and change the way you can with my machine.

thx1138 · 01/11/2010 16:48

What's the problem with Nestle? Hmmmm. Where to start????

dementedma · 01/11/2010 16:49

we have a Krupps red one in work and it is the best thing ever. Can't wait to get to work in the morning to get a decent cup of coffee. The Boss bought it and keeps it topped up. I heart my boss Smile

GingerCursedEeeee · 01/11/2010 16:49

Ryoko nestle info here

thx1138 · 01/11/2010 16:50

Nestle Ishoos

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 01/11/2010 16:53

Gah. Either get a proper espresso machine for decent coffee or a Senseo vaguely acceptable but fundamentally wrong coffee.

Whatever you do, don't waste your money on a pod thing.

MayCanary · 01/11/2010 16:55

Senseo at home, Nespresso at work - think I prefer the Nespresso tbh, it has a creamier top bit.

loonyrationalist · 01/11/2010 17:02

I have a stove top espresso machine, a www.amazon.co.uk/Bodum-1446-Latteo-Milk-Frother/dp/B000BZ6BXEcoffee frother & a grinder (well I say do in reality DH does as I bought them for his birthday)
Whole lot cost less than £60 & still takes only minutes to make & seconds to clean.

I am a total convert - makes strabucks etc pale in comparison - I am not joking when I say I can't drink them anymore.

IlanaK · 01/11/2010 17:13

I think pod machines are yuck to be honest. The packaging is shocking, you are tied into their pods to buy. Nothing tastes as good as freshly ground. I got a coffee grinder and a krups esspresso machine. Makes the most delicious coffee because I can buy excellent beans. I buy Monmouth beans (London based but you can buy online). The few times I had to use starbucks beans as a back up, there was just no comparison.

My friend has a built in Miele nesspresso machine. I drink her coffee every week. It is quite good but I think that is mostly because I always have frothy lattes at her house - the milk is what makes it nicer. The Meile ones are thousands of pounds by the way.

fedupofnamechanging · 01/11/2010 17:30

I have a nescafe dolce gusto thing. It's okay, but you can't control the strength of the coffee. The cafetiere is much better and cheaper than buying the pods.

giveitago · 01/11/2010 17:32

Avoid pods - we had a machine and could only get the pods from a specific supplier and it was working out at £1 per coffee. We then found a supplier in Italy through ebay which was cheaper and then the recession hit and their prices also went through the roof. TBH a cafetiera on the hob is as good and makes your home smell welcoming.

We ditched our pod ages ago. Waste of space and money imo.

HoneyIatethekidsdragon · 01/11/2010 17:49

I have a cafitiere and hardly use it as I am the only coffee drinker the appeal of the pod is for those statbucks crappy coffee things I resent it when I fancy it as Starbucks is so expensive for what you get. Even if I forget nestle ishoos the waste of packaging is also a problem. Yet I am still so sorely tempted by lukewarm artificial coffee.

OP posts:
muggglewump · 01/11/2010 18:29

Then do it with a machine that doesn't tie you in to pods!

AlpinePony · 01/11/2010 18:38

I've got a Senseo - been going strong for 2 years + and I'm a coffee monster. Suited me because with a "real" machine I was drinking literally litres daily. Blush Partner doesn't drink coffee so it makes more sense to have a "one cup" option.
