To really want a pod coffee machine

HoneyIatethekidsdragon · 01/11/2010 15:42

even though they are tied in with Nestle Blush

I really like those Krupps and Nespresso machines. Are they overpriced gimmicks and over rated or will the pleasure I get overcome the guilt?

Hello, this thread is a little old and some of the recommendations might be out of date. If you’re looking for up-to-date advice on the best coffee machine money can buy, take a look at our round-up of Mumsnetters’ favourites. MNHQ.

'Course in a perfect world I'd have hours to kill and would grind my own Turkish...

SleepWhenImDead · 01/11/2010 18:53

I don't understand why you'd want to tie yourself in to a brand, just get yourself a Gaggia and some proper Illy espresso coffee and learn to make a decent espresso.

Plumm · 01/11/2010 18:55

We've got a Nespresso and the coffee is lovely. They also sell a milk frothier called an Aerocino which is brilliant.

lilystar · 01/11/2010 18:57

I have a Senseo. It gathers dust on top of my fridge freezer. It worked ok once I figured it out, but yes, getting that first cup took ages, and lots of spills. If you want it, you can have it!

HonestyBox · 01/11/2010 19:06

MELLOW BIRDS Shock

HoneyIatethekidsdragon · 01/11/2010 19:19

I never knew coffee could be so emotive Shock Smile

If I get a "proper" coffee maker can I still make naff coffee and frothy hot chocolate without

a) faff?
and
b) spending a gadzillion pounds?

we've got a gaggia and are lucky enough to have a small independant coffee supplier nearby, so we get lots of really interesting real coffee, have yet to find any brand name coffee as good

Honeydragon · 02/11/2010 09:28

Sorry guys but I am still considering ruining the enviroment and funding Nestle real coffee machines look like too much money, mess and time.

Tillyscoutsmum · 02/11/2010 09:34

I love my Nespresso Blush The pods are expensive though but I do get excited when we get a new batch in. I love taking them all out of the packets and putting them in my large glass cube. They look so pretty and decadent Blush

No hot choc though Sad

Now look ...

The whole point of this thread is to attract a horde of cross Mnetters to flame me senseless and shame me into sticking with the instant at the back of the cupboard.

Now your telling me I can get parcels delivered and excited too!

Aaaaargh its my birthday soon and I'm going to be blowing £100 on a coffee maker aren't I?
Which will also result in my being withered at by Dh a hardend PG tips drinker.

VivaLeBeaver · 02/11/2010 10:30

I want to get a cappacinno machine, had my first cappaccino for the first time last week and I'm addicted to them now. Not sure if a pod machine or a non pod machine would be best.

Honeydragon · 02/11/2010 10:40

I'll ask Mumsnet to move this too products Wink, clearly coveting coffee paraphanalia is a common thing.

Hope your all happy [sulks]

now once I've saved £200 and bought dd's new car seat I'm going to have to spend my birthday pennies on a coffee machine.

TattyDevine · 02/11/2010 10:50

I already have a "proper" expresso machine which also does a jug of filter coffee (which is very handy when I host a "coffee morning" type thingy) BUT, I am thinking of getting a Nespresso pod machine which does the hot milk too (the magimix one, about £180)

Why?

I HATE HATE HATE the mess that making espresso makes - the drip tray, the grounds in the sink, washing the scoop, the handly jobby, pain in the arse. I use Illy for it, at over £5 a tin and the fact that the machine is slightly grumpy sometimes causing wastage occasionally means I will probably break even on price per cup.

Pods, whilst bad for the environment, you can get a gadget for that takes them apart so you can compost your grounds and recycle your casing, so that's a potential non-issue if you do that. Google for that, and if you have the Nespresso machine, there's a link to them on one of the Amazon reviews for it. I might come back with the link in a bit.

Also, my mother decends on me for big month long visits here and there (she lives in Australia) and she staggers round like an angry drunk until she gets a latte in the morning. She can't have black coffee because she has a digestive disorder called GORD. She is vile until she drinks this damn latte and I just can't be doing with the faff of shots of espresso, frothing milk etc in the machine I currently have, which to be fair is up for the job but lots of effort.

I like the idea of an easy, mess free option for a quick coffee and lets face it they get amazing reviews. I'm not worried about having to order pods, it has an iPhone app, and if I really hate it and its gathering dust I guess I'll sell it on eBay. But as someone who has a "proper" espresso machine, I can still see the appeal, so if you have the money and are happy to "risk" it to see if its for you, then go for it.

Ryoko · 02/11/2010 10:57

Pfft nothing wrong with Nestle, they are a company in a capitalist world and I find it disgusting that people want to boycott them, women in Africa and the like are entitled to choose same as everyone else, it's against feminist values to have the WHO try and force them to exclusively breastfed (I will not bother questioning such logic in this thread about countries with high amount of AIDs and HIV).

I wasn't breastfed neither is my son, I will continue to enjoy drinking Nescafe thank you very much. with my Biscuit

TattyDevine · 02/11/2010 10:59

Here's the recycling gadget, the Outpresso - £20 to ease your concience if the environmental thing is the only thing holding you back.

VivaLeBeaver · 02/11/2010 11:09

Can you make nice cappuccinos just using one of these? aerolatte

Honeydragon · 02/11/2010 11:12

Ryoko I'm with you on that on - I do object to some of their naughtier advertising aspects, but wholeheartedly believe in your capitilist points as well.

Honeydragon · 02/11/2010 11:13

Beaver - had two broke both. Tried friends scutter ( love calling them that now) and it was yummy.

BraveGirl · 02/11/2010 11:15

I love my Nespresso - everyone I make a coffee for loves the coffee.
Try before you buy if you're not sure - in our Lohn Lewis there is a large stand of them and generally there is always someone there willing to let you try it out.
We started with a Krups manual, but have moved on to a Siemens automatic and it is the business - does lattes and cappucinos as well. I wouldn't go back to the mess and random-guess work of ground coffee and instant isn't worth boiling a kettle for!

BraveGirl · 02/11/2010 11:18

Sp. John Lewis of course!!!

VivaLeBeaver · 02/11/2010 11:21

What's a scutter?

With the nespresso is it worth buying the more expensive one with the milk frother then?

Honeydragon · 02/11/2010 11:40

the doce guso loks like the scutters frm red dwarf Smile

Ryoko · 02/11/2010 11:43

Isn't a scutter a robot in Red Dwarf? thats the only kind I know,

I most admit I know nothing of coffee, Starbucks tastes like old fag ends to me, I got a cheap old school coffee maker from Asda hardly use it, I am an instant coffee girl (mainly because I'm just plain bone idle).
