To hate "get real"?

I hated it in the 90s, I hated it when Gordon Brown spouted it, and I hate it even more now. How can people use this stupid phrase without their teeth itching?

It always sounds to me as if there's a word missing: get real what? Progress? Policies?Expectations?

Get real bananas. Toys ones taste of plastic.
