To report my neighbours?

It's a group of 7 men, one of them speaks ok English . For the most part they're alright, apart from minor annoyances.
But now they seem to have started up an unlicensed taxi service. They have put paper phone numbers on the back of their car, which is obviously not a taxi, because here all private cabs have yellow plates on them (these cut out numbers are pink).
However, I'm pretty sure the men aren't supposed to be in this country necessarily, and reporting them will be pretty awful for them.
I feel sorry for them in a way, it's only a two up two down house so living conditions must be pretty horrible wherever they are from to want to live like this.
But I don't like just sitting here watching people commit crimes day in day out!

This is difficult. You wouldn't be doing the wrong thing by reporting them, but I do understand the dilemma.

What are the minor annoyances?

Trifle · 27/10/2010 16:52

Report them, without hesitation. Who cares about their living conditions. They obviously think that running an unlicenced, probably uninsured taxi company is a fast way to make a buck. Regardless of their circumstances, they need to abide by the rules which probably state that they are not allowed to operate a business from home amongst other things. No brainer.

saffy85 · 27/10/2010 16:55

I'd report them. They might be nice men.... They might not. I know I'm not the only person who has mistakenly got into an unlicensed cab and then had to peg it down the street when the "cabby" turned nasty. Some obviously don't get the chance to run at all Sad It's them I'm thinking of when I say report them.

LIZS · 27/10/2010 16:57

Agree with trifle - you may save heartache in the longer term by reporting it now. Do you really want cars coming and going at all hours and they are probably cutting all sorts of corners.

GypsyMoth · 27/10/2010 17:01

report.....

my dad was a proper licensed taxi driver....its idiots like this which took his work, and made the job so difficult!

and if they are here illegally, then of course they should be caught!!

LittleMissHissyFangs · 27/10/2010 17:44

Don't think twice about reporting them.

If they have the right to be here, the right to work, pay all their taxes and the right to operate a taxi company, they will have nothing to worry about.

All the laws and regulations that you feel they may be flouting are there for very good reasons. This is the time of year where more young women need cabs home from Christmas parties etc, think of what you'd feel like if it came to light one of these unlicensed people had raped someone.

Hedgeblunder · 27/10/2010 18:04

Thanks very much everyone, I Will give the council a call about it. I've read the horror stories of poor girls getting in unlicensed taxis too- if they were selling knock off TVs I probably wouldn't mind but I strongly feel these men won't have driving license an therefore no insurance. Just wanted to check I wasn't being hysterical about it!
Thanks again

You are definately not being hysterical about it Hedge. This lot could do all sorts of damage, whether it's attacking paasengers, having an accident while driving uninsured and whatever. Plus they are actually putting themselves in a very dangerous position. They could get mugged for their takings or attacked and not be able to do much about it as they are not licensed. The license is there to protect themselves too.
