I dont know about anyone on here, but i find all the music available for kids really poor - i find it next to impossible (other than classical music) to find some really good soothing music for my kids to nodd off too or play in the car (without having to trawl through albums to find something that works)......i heard there was a beatles orchestral versions cd which sound interesting - but anyone know of any recommended contemporary lullabies - or is it only me who finds that most of the advertised music for kids as annoying as i do.........

What about soporofic stuff like Enya, David Gray, Jazz Moods compilations or Israel Kamakawiwo'le's rendition of 'Over the Rainbow'? Spoken word is also incredibly soothing - Garrison Keillor's voice springs to mind - and I don't think the words matter, to be honest. My personal insomnia cure is listening to the Shipping Forecast ...zzzzz... :)

what's wrong with adult music of the calmer persuasion
have to say I read artists as visual artists
was thinking 'feck off and make that bed first' by tracey emin

I used to sing Paul Simon's song 'St Judy's Comet' to ds1. It is soothing, and the lyrics are lovely. Makes me a bit weepy-nostalgic to think of it now.

Rockabye baby music is great.

Our's have loved it and we can put up with it too, so it's win win.

Jcee · 27/10/2010 14:54

We have this and DD loves it.

The music is done by Funtastic and is available on itunes too

libelulle · 27/10/2010 14:59

playsongs www.playsongs.co.uk does a wonderful series of CDs - lovely simple songs in folky vein, DD has loved them as have I.

exexpat · 27/10/2010 15:17

Catch the Moon by Lisa Loeb might fit the bill - the CD case is actually a board book too...

sockonmyhead · 27/10/2010 15:22

we have 'colours are brighter' which is mostly silly songs by lots of different bands. There are a couple of really lovely slow songs on it too, 'i am an astronaut' is fab!

EvilAllenPoe · 27/10/2010 15:26

though we just play what we like in the car, and they nod off anyway.

EvilAllenPoe · 27/10/2010 15:26

zero 7 would be good for a whole album of relaxing choon.

sillymoo123 · 27/10/2010 15:44

Sorry can't do links, feeding baby.....

Look in Amazon for 'Lullaby Rainbow Collections" - lovely contemporary versions of old lullabies you can download onto MP3. Singer reminds me of Sinead O'Connor.

Also look in Amazon for "Lullabies Nicola Baxter" - book and CD, sort of modern folk, lovely version of Pretty Horses (well I like it) comes with nice picture book and words

Am coveting a book called "Over the Rainbow" which has 3 track CD sung by Judy Collins

- An absolute classic, my mum and Dad used to sing this to me, and now we sing it to DD - it is gorgeous :)
MsKalo · 27/10/2010 19:09

I agree that the cd on amazon called lullaby by the rainbow collection is amazing. I have it on now whilst baby is breastfeeding!

jenniferturkington · 27/10/2010 19:12

I took my ds to 'music for aardvarks', a baby music group originating in New York. The guy who writes the songs is called David Weinstone, he is on itunes and youtube. He has written some amazing lullabies- 'welcome to the world' is my particular fave.
The rest of his music is great, definately for kids but at the same time not tedious for adults. Check out 'fire truck' and 'Roman', they are great. Nick Jnr have animated some of his music I think.

POFAKKEDDthechair · 27/10/2010 21:30

We have a couple of cds from playsongs They're brilliant, and it is a company created by musicians who are parents.

scottishmummy · 27/10/2010 21:31

sophie barker of zero7

BuntyPenfold · 27/10/2010 21:43

Stephen Fry reading almost anything - soothing and lovely.

scouserabroad · 27/10/2010 21:47

My 4 year old likes to listen to Pink Floyd and Bob Dylan in the car, it seems to stop her getting grumpy. She also likes black eyed peas, Katie Perry and Lady Gaga, tho she isn't allowed to see the videos.

Oops, lullaby, you said Grin
